It’s not just internet trolls who question the move of Hartline to OC.  he is a good recruiter and coaches the position he played in college and the NFL.  That is a much different skill than coordinating the offense and possibly calling plays.  And my point or concern is not that Hartline cannot be good in that role, it’s that OSU should not be hiring guys with no experience in such positions to cut their teeth.

And further, to Klatt’s point, yes, Day needs to hand off the offense and play calling to the OC.  If he did not do that with Kevin Wilson, who has decades of experience as both an OC and head coach, you think he will hand it over to Hartline, who has only been a football coach for 3 years, all of which were spent coaching WRs?  I think this move prevents Day from letting go of the offense and playcalling and further exacerbates the issues that causes.  To put it simply, Day will have to be more involved now, not less.

Good, upcoming coaches come and go.  It’s what it is.  Like with Coombs to DC, I have concerns. I am not saying I think Hartline will not succeed in this role, but why take the chance, and why take the chance at a time when Day needs someone he can hand things off to.  We needed a head coach of the offense, not a new guy with no experience.  Even if he has all the potential in the world.

JTT had one great game.  Even including PSU, he  had 28 tackles and 3.5 sacks.  Outside of PSU he was pretty average (1.5 sacks in 12 games).  Sacks are not everything, but there were several games that he had little to no impact at all.

He was only a second year player and has some potential, but he is not a star or difference maker yet (outside of one game).  And he is probably the first guy you point to on our D with elite potential, the rest are even less potential stars.

And that is my point. Right now, who is our best player on D?  Tommy? He is a good college player in the traditional MLB role.  Who else?  Any first rounders?  Anyone opponents have to game plan against?  Because I see no one.  Its a bunch of solid or average guys out there.  And not average for all college football, don’t give me that bs.   Very average for starters on a team who wants to compete for major conference and national titles. No stars.

The 2020 team also played against two playoff teams, including a great offense that Bama had, and played no out of conference games to pad those stats,  and only 8 games total.  Cannot look at the stats to compare 2020 to other years.

I agree we cannot fire coaches after two years absent a total disaster.  This is Holtman’s sixth season.

If you have inept DBs you do not call blitzes/coverages that leave those inept DBs without help behind them, so when their foreseeable mistakes occur you give up 15-20 yards, not 70-yard touchdowns.

Comment 18 Jan 2023

Maybe so.  But we gave up 87 points in our last two games and the two highest yards per play against games in OSU history in our last two games played.  Think about that, the two worst defensive performances in osu history by one metric in our last two games played.

So I remain not convinced Knowles’ scheme is the answer.

I expect in year 2 you will see some natural progression.  But I also see a lack of top-end talent, playmakers, and stars on D.  I see a lot of average guys out there.  I do not see any standout unit.  And I remain unconvinced that a 4-2-5 is the best base defense.  It seemed to confuse our secondary more than the opponent at times, and allowed a huge number of backbreaking big plays.

No.  I believe the 2019 D was #1 in total D and #4 in scoring D.

Comment 16 Jan 2023

This is not someone’s subjective rankings; cannot say “too high.”  Its just how the teams have been ranked by all final AP polls ever.  No one “should” be ahead of anyone else.

For me his legacy is a guy who was a good passer under nice conditions who rarely if ever elevated his team and was at the helm when OSU lost its perch at the top of the conference. 0-2 vs UM.  Never won the conference. Not saying he was to blame for everything, but he was the starting qb and that is how this goes.  He was a talented passer who played for teams who vastly out talented most opponents and he got to throw to Olave, Wilson, JSN, Marv, and Ebuka.

And maybe it’s a different discussion if we had won the natty.  But we lost in the semifinals to the SEC.  So there was no silver lining and we are left with a second straight season with zero big wins and zero goals accomplished.  The first two goals are beating UM and winning the big 10.

Comment 15 Jan 2023

Facts:

Day is 1-2 against UM and has not beaten them since the loaded 2019 team. Stroud was 0-2 against UM with no conference titles.  We have players leaving their osu careers with zero gold pants (Paris Johnson).

We played GA close, but we lost.  We also lost to UM by 3 TDs on our home field.

The top 5 picks last year got 20+ million dollar signing bonuses.  it does not seem realistic that a 1-year NIL deal could approach that.

Comment 11 Jan 2023

I am not sure I agree with the premise that draft eligible players leave at a higher rate from OSU than they do from other schools.  i imagine the percentage who leave is very close across all schools over a long period of time.

As I said before, not taking advantage of the portal will pit us at a huge disadvantage.  Day needs to wake up.  We need to recruit it as hard as we recruit high school players.  Maybe more, as many in the portal are known commodities and can contribute immediately to cover holes in the roster.
