Not to re-open old wounds, but a neutral party in the national media finally laid out all the ways the Bengals got screwed by the NFL’s handling of the Bills game:

I don’t think this is happening at all. Burrow wants to be here. The Brown family wants him to be here. Burrow will get paid whatever he asks for.

The only question is whether he’s willing to leave enough money on the table that we can afford his favorite receivers and a decent line. I think he’s smart enough to realize that’s the best way for him to make more money in the long run.

When the Bengals came into the league they should have been placed in the NFC

Just say you don’t understand anything about the pre-merger NFL and move on. None of the AFL teams went to the NFC. Modell chased the money like he always does and took the cash to move the Browns from NFC to AFC. Cincinnati has been an AFL/AFC team since their inaugural season. Cleveland has not.

Comment 18 Jan 2023

Exactly. Columbus is within 3 hours of 5 different NFL teams (CIN, IND, DET, CLE, PIT). It’s the last place they would add another.

Comment 18 Jan 2023

Ok, now pretend you are a Navy football fan. They get one game a year on national TV. That’s what it would be like for both Bengals and Browns fans if the NFL allowed that type of TV model.

The Steelers, Cowboys, and Patriots would be aired nationwide while everybody else got streamed on ESPN8. The Buckeyes have the biggest fanbase in college football. Cleveland and Cincinnati are among the smallest markets in the NFL (probably in part because the Columbus market is split).

Comment 17 Jan 2023

If we’re drawing comparisons to the college game, you’ve missed an obvious one. Conference championships (AFC) are a lot like conference championships (Big Ten).

And while they’re definitely not the ultimate goal, I’d much rather win them than not. And I think you’d agree that ‘06 and ‘20 have some much happier memories (and hardware!) attached to them than ‘21 or ‘22.

Comment 17 Jan 2023

It’s more about community than the franchise. I spent a lot of time as a Bengals fan in Youngstown and Columbus. I don’t have a Browns jersey or anything, but misery doesn’t have to love company. When we were 2-14, I’d have rather seen my Browns fan friends happy than watch the Steelers have another SB run.

Comment 17 Jan 2023

They are.

I and many other Bengal fans root for Cleveland (or did, prior to Deshaun) as a secondary team when Cincinnati isn’t doing well, and I have plenty of Browns fan friends who do the same for the Bengals. I never root for the Steelers under any circumstances.

Bengals/Browns isn’t a real rivalry - there’s never been anything at stake for both teams at the same time besides draft position.

Comment 17 Jan 2023

Instead of thinking about it as having two teams, think about it as having two local games simultaneously airing on local TV. Instead of the game being aired in Columbus late in the season being decided by whose playoff hopes are still alive, it would be one team on Fox, the other on CBS. No conflict whatsoever.

To prove my point, for all the talk of the importance of the Browns/Steeler rivalry, no one in Columbus (or even Toledo!) got to watch it in week 18. They were watching the Bengals or nothing:

As any Browns fan will tell you, they have NFL (again, now NFC) championships against those NFC teams. All of that history is unrelated to the AFL (AFC). They’ll also tell you that Baltimore is an entirely different team, totally unrelated to the Browns, and nothing was stolen (the alternative being that they call the current team an expansion team).

I’m just saying it’s less awkward from a banner perspective for the team with NFC ties and championships to go back to the NFC.

Comment 17 Jan 2023

Ohio is the only state with multiple teams that has them all/both in the same conference. Having them in the same division is just silly. So who do you move?

The Bengals have won the AFC three times. The Browns have won it zero. The Bengals have won the AFC North six times. Browns have won it zero. There’s a history with the Bengals and the AFC, while all of the good things in Browns history come from their time as an NFL (pre-merger, now named NFC) team.

It seems obvious to me that Cleveland should be kicked over to the NFC for the reasons listed above, along with a natural rivalry with Detroit in all other sports. The real question is which team makes sense to switch spots with them?

Comment 16 Jan 2023

Oh, for sure. I’m expecting the worst - and I would guess that the staff is planning for the same. But the fact that there’s still a sliver of hope for anything better is better than I was expecting ~18 hours ago.

Frankly, anything better than a line made of toothpicks and used toilet paper has me optimistic given what Burrow & Co. pulled off last year.

The last update we had on Cappa seemed to suggest he could be back for the Divisional round. If it’s not more extensive than a dislocation for Williams, maybe the O-line has a chance to be at 80% instead of 40%.

Comment 15 Jan 2023

Buffalo looked pretty bad today, too. If the Dolphin receivers caught any of the balls that hit them in the hands or face today, we’d be playing them instead. (Technically I guess that would mean we’re playing Jax, but the point stands)

Comment 15 Jan 2023

On to Buffalo!

The NFL’s total mismanagement of the Bills game comes back to bite us like we knew it would (a neutral site game for this one should have at least been discussed)

We’re on injury watch for Williams and the possibility Cappa can get back. And I’m sure the “bring Whit out of retirement” crowd won’t get quieter now that we’re officially hurting at LT.

Comment 15 Jan 2023

Yeah, everybody on the planet except the refs had that one right from the beginning

Comment 15 Jan 2023

14 point play for Hubbard. Couldn’t happen to a more deserving guy

Ravens are playing their style. Injuries are accumulating fast. McPherson is officially experiencing a sophomore slump.

None of that is a reason for this team to lose to the Ravens and a backup QB, though. Lots of time left, and that goal line stand is encouraging.

Comment 15 Jan 2023

My point was not about the audience they reach, but about the existence and persistence of vitriolic trolls who spew unfounded, irrelevant criticism at successful people from the comfort their homes throughout the ages.

But yes, letters are different than the internet, and reach a smaller audience. It saddens me that you think that clarification is necessary, and it baffles me that you managed to miss the point without it.

Comment 15 Jan 2023

We could have won the natty last year with that team.

If we’re going to fantasize about what might have happened, why not just take an extra step and imagine us beating TTUN, too? Why is your imagination so limited?

Ravens are reportedly going to use both Huntley and Brown at QB tonight. Hopefully the old adage “if you have two QBs, you don’t have one” holds true.
