Your first explanation is correct. The concept is the same as a TD, break the plane before stepping out, TD. It is always where the ball is when it crosses the plane, not where the player crosses over. On the sideline, when he touches out of bounds, where is the ball? If it is still inbounds, mark the ball dead there. If it is out of bounds, then mark it where the ball crossed the sideline (whether the ball is forwards or backwards).

In Bowers case it was very close to a first down, but was called short. It should not have been overturned. Not enough evidence based on the angle

Who is projected to take JSN? I would think his stock took a serious dive this year.He needs a good showing at the combine, otherwise he may go second round.

Harrison is a rare gem. You can teach a person how to play, but you can't teach size and speed. When Harrison shows out at the combine, I would expect his profile to skyrocket and be a first round lock, maybe even top 10.

Harrison and Treyveon being so low is quite the surprise. McCord being so high is too. His lone start was against Akron, even Joe Bauserman lit up Akron (12-16, 163, 3TD's). The Buckeye offense will be on fire again next year, so whoever the QB is, will be a Heisman contendeer. Hopefully Treyveon has to prove his freshman year wasn't a fluke. Harrison is the real deal, if he is not a Heisman finalist, I would be shocked.

Those crazy pressure defenses are great against teams that have average or below offenses, ask Mark Dantonio how they do against great teams when the weather is not bad. Against the better offenses, Knowles made the D even worse (witness MD, UM and GA for proof). They were better overall because the guys Kerry was coaching (and recruited) got more experience. Kerry was learning on the job, that worked against him. Sadly, it is the same thing Knowles is doing, because he never faced competition like UM and GA during his one good defensive year at OkSU. In case you didn't know, all his other defensive years at OkSU were actually worse than last years OSU defense. He had one, one good year. let's hope Knowles picked some things up during his one year here, and his last year at OkSU not an aberration.

The Buckeys are really good at keeping the game close. It doesn't matter if the opponent is #1 Purdue or winless Minnesota. There is nothing wrong with that if you win against the bad teams and at least most of the close games against the good ones. Lately, they have all turned into losses. I would even chalk it up to bad luck, but the track record goes back years. I never like calling for someone's job. Many teams would love to have a coach like Holt to get them into the NCAA's each year. The real problem is the Buckeyes can't close during crunchtime, since it is pretty much every year, so it has to be in game coaching.

How do we fix this? Initial thought is fire Holtmann, but the problem may be as simple as hiring an X's and O's guy as an assistant (like Schyer was at Duke). This would solve the end of game problems, and free up Holtmann to do the things he does well.

Thank you Nutpina. People are so quick to prop up Ryan, but forget about the other constant since 2017, who has a decades long proven track record, Kevin Wilson. I hope the offense goes without missing a beat, but I would not be surprised to see hiccups next year.

Comment 18 Jan 2023

Ryan coached only one year under Chip Kelly at New Hampshire (TE coach), and then 13 years later, one year at Philadephia (QB coach), then one more year at SF. I am not knocking Ryan Day, and I wasn't doing that in the thread. He was an unknown coach then, and obviously he isn't now, but nothing is guaranteed when a coach of Kevin Wilson's caliber leaves the offense. One thing has been consistent since Wilson was hired as OC, the offense. I am not predicting doom, people here know my writing style, it is not my thing. I am saying be aware, things may not be as simple now that Wilson is gone. If that happens, the quick answer next year will be to blame the OL and the QB. I used 2014 with Hermann and 2015 with Warriner/Beck as proof up there in a previous post. OSU with the same players went from 46ppg to 36 because of the OC and QB coach.

Comment 18 Jan 2023

What is so funny? If you know history, Kevin Wilson had turned the Wildcats into an offensive team while at Northwestern, they beat OSU and won a conference championship because of their offense. You might remember him as the OC at Oklahoma 2002-2010, where he won the conf championship 7 out of 10 years. You also should remember him specifically at Indiana, where whe would use the same formation and set people up with a completely different play later in the game. As an OSU fan, you shouldn't need a refresher.

As for Ryan Day, he was an unknown, was QB coach at Philly (7-9) and SF (2-14) for one year each, was let go both times.

Certainly you aren't laughing at me saying Beck/Warriner costing OSU 1 or 2 NC's. In 2015 they basically had the same offensive juggernaut from 2014. 2014, 44.5 ppg, 2015 35.7ppg, 2016 39.4ppg.

So I ask you again, what is so funny in my post?

Let's see how they do without Kevin Wilson, he was the achitect of this offense. Kevin was a proven offensive genius before coming to OSU. Ryan was a nobody before he came to OSU. Let's hope Ryan learned from Kevin and implements his teachings to Hartline. We won't know until next year. If they fail, most uneducated fans will blame it on the offensive line, or the new QB. Those are things that have not been issues when we had to replace the same caliber of people in those positions under Wilson.

2015 and 2016 shows us what bad offensive play calling can do to a team. With those defenses, and the offensive talent especially of the 2015 team, those teams should have never lost a game. Unproven Beck and Warriner cost OSU at least 1, but probably 2 national Championships.

That could be true, but they were good in 2020, and I still didn't hate them. Of course the Bengals sucked that year, so again, indifferent. Back in the late 80's, I would have been pissed if the Browns made the Super Bowl. I get pissed every time the Ravens win though. I'm indifferent to the Steelers too. I don't hate them, I just don't like them.

I think it is the old Browns rivalry thing. The Browns and Ravens share the same history. The Ravens all the way back to Paul Brown, and the Browns are really only from 1999 (or whatever year they started), but they "identify" as from the beginning too. I don't buy that, they started fresh, new ownership, new players, etc. The Browns franchise as we knew it went to Baltimore - Damn you Art Modell.

Comment 18 Jan 2023

Back in the late 80s, I hated that they were in the same division. I hated the Browns until they moved to Baltimore. Come to think of it, I hate the Ravens, so in a sense, I still hate the Browns, they just play in Baltimore now. When the new Browns were created, that's when I was indifferent to the Browns and their fans. The same as I am today.

OSU doesn't seem to be losing many guys to the portal. The Collabratives must be paying them well. I would think 200k at OSU is worth more in security than say 500k (or more) at a non blue blood school. OSU's problem is recruiting for positions other than QB and WR has taken a dive. NIL is the only thing that has changed. because of that, OSU needed to recruit the portal for multiple Offensive Lineman and struck out every single time. Sadly, it will catch up to OSU if something isn't done to slow the paying of recruits. I never though the portal would be an issue since they transfer almost immediately. As long as there are people ready to pay the players bonus money just to transfer, it will only become more of an issue.

Comment 17 Jan 2023

Olave, Wilson, first round 2022, JSN potential first round 2023, Marvin first round lock 2024, Emeka potential first round 2024. Things are looking good for potential recruits wanting to a path to the NFL. Of course will take the ridiculous NIL money being passed around too from other teams, but OSU will still get those high recruits at receiver as long as Hartline is here.

Comment 17 Jan 2023

If this is true, Florida should be under investigation. Florida will have to prove they didn't know anything of this deal to a recruit.

Their are two problems that may ruin college football. Paying recruits before they sign with their schools, and allowing players to transfer once without any penalty. The NCAA just needs to enforce the recruiting rule, start with Florida. The other is simple, stop the one time free transfer. The portal is only going to get larger every year.

In the last 25 years:

CJ was 0-2, Braxton was 1-1, Krenzel was 2-1, Steve Belasari was also 0-2, and Stanley Jackson 0-1. The winners are, Justin 2-0, Haskins 1-0, JT 4-0, Pryor 2-0, Boeckman 1-0, Troy 3-0, Germaine 1-0 (I think Germaine might have started the 1996 game (a loss), not 100% sure, but it is beyond your 25 year threshold.

Comment 16 Jan 2023

Unlike Stroud and Haskins, you can't define JT by his passing game. It was really good, but was not even close to Stroud. Stroud is an elite passer, probably will be great in the NFL too, JT not so much. You can shut JT down one one side, but then he'll burn you in the other. You're arguing who the better passer was, there is no argument there, it was Stroud, easily.

Comment 16 Jan 2023

It almost always seems as if OSU never has two sides of the ball that match. 2002, no offense, 2006 no defense, 2007 no offense, 2013 no defense, 2015-2016, no offensive coordinators lol, 2017 no defense (whenit counted), 2018 no defense, 2020-2022 no defense. All of those teams were good enough to win it all. Fortunately 2002 had one of the greatest OSU's defenses of all time to override the good enough offense. All those QB's are great, I couldn't put a single one of them down.

Comment 16 Jan 2023

Revisionist history is what you are are doing. Again, I am comparing his freshman and senior years, now you are throwing in the other years with Warriner and Beck. They kept JT from becoming the all time TD leader in NCAA history. You want to count 2015 against CFP team MSU? Ok Stroud had an even worse game against last place Northwestern.

Here's the great thing about JT, he is a dual threat. JT had 125 yards rushing in 2016 vs UM. He single handidly kept OSU in that game. 2017, seriously, I already mentioned this, JT was literally ran over by golf cart. Yes he was losing  but only because the defense gave up a score moments before they took JT out. You don't know what would have happened had he stayed in, but he was injured in the game.

MSU 2017, 14-21 183 yards and 55 yards rushing  and 4 TDS - How is that shutting him down? MSU 2016, JT had 125 rushing yards, remember he was a dual threat, there are 2 parts to his game. 2015, ok, I'll give you that. He had a terrible game, in raining windy conditions, same as stroud vs nrothwestern,it happens.

No excuses for Clemson game, I was at that game, he had no time to throw and nowhere to run. I'm still mad about that game, and this is unrelated to this thread. Had Durbin not missed his 2 kicks early on, and Weber wouldn't have fumbled twice, it might have been a closer game, Of course we know Clemson steals signals, but we didn't know it then. That game pisses me off almost as much as the NC in 2020 when the game should have been suspended for a week because of covid, but Kevin Warren had the 15 day quarantine policy, whereas the SEC had a 7 day policy. Grrrr...

Iowa, ugh, that was ugly. No excuses for that one. His best game at OSU was PSU the week before. Then he followed it up with his worst.

I posted the stats because you said it wasn't close, but I proved to you that it was. I respect your opinion, but I backed mine up with stats.
