No doubt in my mind Holtmann has lost the room. No discipline, no structure, no energy, sloppy play with no consequences, .... I could go on but my headache is coming back.

What a putz!
Bingo, recruiting is nothing to get excited about anymore. It has to be even more frustrating for coaching staffs. And even after signing day it is a day to day coddling to keep a player in the fold. This free agency is worse than the pros since there is no contracts involved and I hope it doesn't go there next.
It just boils down that the frosh are talented but will need seasoning. The major let down is the portal transfers and Sueing are bringing very little to the table regards to experience. They make as many fundamental mistakes as the freshmen. No leadership showing up anywhere. Key is not 100%, but those two low blocks misses before end of regulation from both sides of the rim were just crucial. If you are the go to guy and you have a isolation match up you have got to win those battles. Rutgers post was simply better.
I just hope they don't have him miked up today. I had my fill of his visible coaching prowess the last game. LOL
The mike -up actually turned me off to both coaches and players. I actually heard very little coaching. Mostly it was cheerleading, pregnant pauses, calling out a schemes, who to keep off the boards, but not accountabilities of any player for anything happening on the floor. As for the players they just looked like a flat, disinterested, pick up squad. There was little excitement and players trying to motivate other players. It was as a textbook definition of a flat performance for both coaches and players.
Does anybody understand why Okpara played only a paltry 7 minutes? I though not. And where was Brown at the end of the game? I thought he had some good minutes earlier in the 2nd half.
That split screen and coverage inside the OSU timeouts and half time didn't do anything to convince me of Holtmann's coaching prowess. Just wow, SMH
I would toss Johnson into that mix of Day and Hardline and maybe Frye will surface. Yeah but some of these other guys got to start help getting some recruiting wins.
Going into the season with one experienced post and an one inexperienced freshman is just ridiculous anyways for a top notch program that OSU wants to have. Who couldn't see that lack of depth at the post was going to be a serious issue even without an injury occurring?
Yep 100%. Stroud run had Ga on their heels. Three possession type of passes would have crushed Ga over committing to putting pressure on Stroud. I had no problem with the play calling the whole game, but those three plays called were just gut wrenching. Offense knew when they left the field they left the FG special team in a bad spot. One of the linemen even commented so.
It was absolutely the definition of the types of hit the NCAA proclaims they want to protect players from. The slow motion replay of the hit was actually worse than when viewed at normal speed which was questionable enough to draw the flag. There was nothing on the review clear enough to side that it was a legal hit. Yet the replay officials denied the targeting instead of ruling for player safety. I don't buy it and the NCAA front shouldn't of either. Gene Smith should have called it out, but no he ducked it.
There is enough experience on this team that the press shouldn't be such a factor. Maryland didn't even apply a good press OSU simply imploded with just the look of Md trying to apply a press.
It doesn't matter who they are playing. Calling a TO with less than 10 sec left just allows the D to setup. Then to come out of TO with the crap that was drawn up? He has trouble managing the end of games. Last one a remember was NC. It's not the youth. Take your scales and grey glasses off and be objective, doesn't make you less of a fan.
Holtmann has a difficult time closing games. The end of BB games makes or breaks coaches. That is not an unfair criticism it's just the fact as hard as is to accept.
Agreed. Damn never should called a TO under 10sec it just sets up the D. I just don't understand Holtmann thinking. Then you come out of a TO with that crap. Good effort sad management at the end. SMH
Gene Smith needs to stand up for the program and make an official inquiry to the NCAA Officials Division to review the hit on Harrison and give public comment on their opinion. Yeah it wouldn't change the result on the scoreboard but it would put light on how Ga actually won the game on an illegal hit. I have no doubt how they would rule. Ga fans wouldn't like it and SEC would have a fit but it would settle the fact of whether the call was mis-justice or not,
Yep. I know this would cause political problems, but I think Gene Smith should publicly formally request the NCAA office to review that play and to publicly comment their view on the call. It was an over aggressive hit on a defenseless player plain as day. In doing so it wouldn't change the outcome of the game but for them to admit it was an egregious call and negatively impacted OSU abilities to win the game would make me feel a bit better. Reviewed calls like that, especially reversing calls made on the field, need to be explained to the audience. They simply picked up the flag, said there was no targeting, but nothing over aggressive hitting of a defenseless player. It was just a slap in OSU's face. Officials need to be held accountable like the players and coaches, not necessarily fired but made to admit their mistake. In retrospect the whole handling of the event seems fishy and ruined the game in my view.
No B10, Pac 12, or B12 is going into the south specifically SEC country and not get homered by the officiating. How many times have I seen this movie over 60 years, well too many times.
I really don't think he is all that raw just needs more minutes. His athleticism is pretty impressive. Most inexperienced kids his size have trouble with their footwork, but he doesn't seem to. Needs more weight room work, but he can contribute now, Play the kid, going to need him down the road.
I agree with the need to step it up on recruiting the portal. Michigan clean-up in the portal and has brought in a haul of experience. According to 247 portal rankings they got the #1 LB, #2 center, #2 interior OL, #2 edge defender, #4 OT, #5 TE and a back up QB from Indiana J, Tuttle. Quite a haul.
The shot at 1,2 seconds came from a sideline inbound play on our half of the court. The play followed a timeout to boot. The baseline inbound didn't really bother me, the sideline inbound defense setup was atrocious.
Rewatch the play and tell me what the hell Sueing was doing defensively. He had his back to the inbound guarding air. Face guarding the sideline inbound forces the ball left or right of the defender but its a difficult toss over the top with accuracy. No depth to step back for view and clearance. that was all OSU needed was an inaccurate toss. Had there been more time remaining I would agree with you. Back off the inbounder, position in paint to provide a free lance to double up on defense. But with 1.2 seconds remaining the last thing you want is a clean pass, a catch. and shoot. Minimally Sensabaugh should have been between Nance and the passer slightly edging to stop a back cut to the bucket. Lots of coaching errors in that last play to exist after coming out of a timeout. Sueing positioning was just comical.
Agreed. I don't how someone who watches much basketball could see any other way. If you rewatch the inbound play at the end of regulation, Sueing was five foot away with his back to the player inbounding the ball. He was guarding complete air. Strangest positioning I have ever saw. I think Holtmann expected a pick at the top of the circle for a three point shot. Looked completely screwed up. If you are not guarding the inbounder at least position the guy in middle of the paint so he read the pass and rushes to the spot to double up the defense.
Okpara fouled out in overtime. He was available for that last play in regulation. YES your second comment is spot on. Inbounding long passes from sidelines is difficult with the restricted space to step back for aiding clearance and view. Someone bounding up and down in front of the inbounder would have greatly reduced NC chances of getting a perfect pass that could be handled to get a shot off. I am still amazed at such a screw up or lack of understanding.
