Phenomenal pick up. Following up the #8 class in the country with another likely Top 10 class in 23' with Chatman, Middleton, Royal, and Parks is pretty incredible. In 21' and 22' only two programs stacked Top 10 classes in consecutive years: Kentucky and Duke.
“I’d say for athletes, the fanbase is crazy. They don’t have any (pro) sports teams, so it’s really just Ohio State athletics," Chatman said. "I think the fanbase they have is good, they show a lot of love around campus and around the state.”
Huh? Nobody let him see the Pro Soccer and Hockey teams, let alone the Browns/Bengals/Reds/Indians/Cavs.
I mean what did he say that was wrong if you aren’t in Cleveland or cincy then Ohio state is king and I’d argue even in Cleveland Ohio state is king. Hell I live in northwest Ohio pro football is not that popular I mean I would say the Steelers are probably the most popular nfl team in nw Ohio. I always laugh when out of staters ask me what my nfl team is and I always say it’s Ohio state
He’s talking about Columbus. Which makes sense as one of his comparisons was Minneapolis where the Gophers share the city with the Vikings, Twins, Wild, and T-Wolves.
And yes, the Jackets were overlooked but even as an NHL fan, that’s not surprising given they have never even made so much as a conference final.
It’s also that the NHL, while being one of the big 4 pro sports in America, is also way behind the NFL, MLB, and NBA in terms of recognition and following. Add in that OSU is a monster in those categories, and it feels like the Jackets don’t even exist as a threat to OSU fan allegiance supremacy.
Incredible recruiting by the staff the last two cycles! I had major questions about our recruiting before but I give full credit to Holtmann and the staff for stepping up.
Taison is the truth. Smooth, efficient playmaker who can man the 1 or the 2 for us, who can shoot and score and facilitate in equal measure. What a perfect addition to a backcourt that could prove to be elite his first year.
Keep in mind that a vast majority of Matta's high ceiling success happened in Years 6-9. You obviously cannot take away that magical Year 3 with Oden and Conley. But he had 2 tourney appearances and 1 tourney win (over a 15 seed) in the other 4 seasons.
In Matta's Years 6 thru 9, the Buckeyes went Sweet 16- Sweet 16- Final 4- Elite 8. Holtmann is entering Year 6. It's taken him awhile, but I finally the talent on paper is nearly on par with the best Matta teams. Will the results be similar? Hard to say, but I am optimistic with all the talent coming to Columbus.
To be fair to Matta, we weren't eligible for the tourney his first year, took a bunch of average players plus Dials and won the conference in year 2 and inexplicably was left out of the tournament in year 4. But as you point out, it was really recruiting and what Matta accomplished starting in 2010 that really sets him apart.
Holtmann seems to have gotten recruiting on track to get us back into national contention and hopefully results meet expectations.
IDK, we finished 6th in the conference that year. MN finished 5th and was an 8 seed, Iowa finished 7th and was a 10 seed. Beating #1 and undefeated Illinois the last game of the season almost assuredly would have gotten us in the tourney.
I'd guess the odds of him playing college are about 20 to 1 (hes a month into his senior year and hasn't visited anyone officially). The odds of him playing at OSU are maybe 50 to 1.
I truly believe in Coach and the staff! More importantly the players believe in him or they would not be coming here to play! We are going to find out. Let Go Bucks!!!
Wonder how conversations went during Chatman and Washington’s visits. Could they not have coexisted on the roster? Random question but why is it impossible to find that gray throwback jersey?
Not enough spots. OSU is out of schollys. So, the short answer is no. I believe basketball is not like football where you can over recruit your scholarship #’s. One thing moving forward would not shock me is if Bronny comes on as a preferred walk on. Lebron does not need the scholarship money - then someone would probably transfer out then put him on scholarship…..
This may not be popular comment, but, yeh it's great to have all this talent. We've had talent. That hasn't been the problem. The mediocrity has been the problem from the last few seasons based on game results/tournament(s) results. Turn mediocrity into success and then we can celebrate. (p.s. success may or may not be defined by any one of our perceptions, but I'm talking about finishing 1st or 2nd in the Big Ten. Finishing 1st or 2nd in the Big Ten Tourney and then at LEAST getting to Sweet 16 or Elite 8. IN any case, welcome Mr. Chatman and Go Bucks!
We've had some talent, but we haven't been solid at the 1 through 5 at the same time nor had high quality depth. I think some of that has been related to recruiting misses, but its also been injuries, early departures and transfers. I mean if last years team had Washington, Sueing and Towns (healthy of course), I think you are looking at a team thats likely S16 and maybe more.
And ironically our most talented team (2006-07) lost to a team full of NBA draft talent who collectively decided to stay in school. I’m not sure that’s ever happened in the last 20+ years aside from that 2006-07 Florida team.
This is to Griffen and/or anyone else for that matter: Ohio State is slated to play in the Maui Classic this season are they already scheduled for one of those type of tournaments next season?
I watch mostly Football but I love all Buckeyes teams. The above article and the links to each guys recruiting page helped a lot for me to learn more and appreciate what great commits these are
Hopefully the team will exceed expectations.

Back to back top 10 classes for Coach Holtmann! Another great addition to the program, can’t wait to see what Taison does!
Looks promising. Chatman is 2" taller and ~60 spots higher in the rankings than GW3.
Hopefully, he pans out and succeeds in all areas at OSU.

I mean he was talking about Columbus I’m sure lol. But ya there are the Crew and blue jackets I guess.
Are the Clippers and that sweet sweet stadium not pro?

Steelers the most popular NFL team in NW Ohio, you sir are in error.

If they aren’t then it’s 50/50 between them and the browns
I hope the officiating in the BIG doesn’t cost him post season accolades. That would be a disservice to an outstanding player
Oops! Funny that a guy from Minnesota, of all places, was oblivious to the presence of an NHL team.
He’s talking about Columbus. Which makes sense as one of his comparisons was Minneapolis where the Gophers share the city with the Vikings, Twins, Wild, and T-Wolves.

Johnny Hockey just shed a tear at that comment.

Boom!! Holtmann is killing it on the recruiting trail! Now to translate that to the court!

Maybe Holtmann can do Matta glory years type things after all. I am so ready for another Final Four type team even if it prematurely ages me.

True, but that team that was ineligible was a bubble team at best. Whereas Holtmann likely had a 5 seed team in 2020 when the tourney got canceled.

Great pickup!! Coach is bringing in back to back classes. Time for it to translate on the hardwood.
Love it or leave it!
Very smooth & a prolific scorer. Does anyone have any intel on his game on the defensive end of the court?
Champions. Undisputed.
Coach has the materials, time to bring home the glitter.

Boom! Thank you coach Holtmann
Go Bucks!!
BOOM!
Boom - Shaka - Laka
Always try to look for the positive ........... in the midst of a crisis !!
The teams that win big have a super star. He needs to land one of those and then it's going to get good. Until then it's probably mediocrity.
Go Bucks!
The way he's standing in front of the picture of himself it looks like he has a giant left hand.
Negativity is a choice I seldom make. Everything has a positive spin. Sometimes you simply have to look a little harder

NIL has been good for Holtmann! These back 2 back classes should really show if he can coach talent or not
I truly believe in Coach and the staff! More importantly the players believe in him or they would not be coming here to play! We are going to find out. Let Go Bucks!!!

Just a happy to be happy for Ohio State basketball again! The off-season is rough when the basketball team is mediocre.
