#FIREHOLTMAN... can't recruit

HS
bsk33's picture

4 of Holtmann's first 15 recruits (classes 2017-2021) were Top 65 national recruits. That's 27%. Even if you stretch it out to Top 80 (adding Kyle Young and Luther Muhammed), it's still only 6 out of 15 (40%).

Obviously the 23' class is set to sign, though they should in a few weeks, and Mobley is a long way off. But 8 of the last 10 recruits (classes 22'-24') are Top 65 recruits.

I play, coach stays. He goes, I go.

HS
stxbuck's picture

Unless you are the new coach at Duke or UNC, it is going to take a couple of classes to see recruiting amped up to a consistent top 10-15 level/stacking top classes.
That’s one thing that the howlers on here fail to note-but Mobley did-the players on the team trust Holtman and his personal integrity, which will only pay further dividends down the recruiting road.

Welcome to the Buckeye family Mr. Mobley, always good to have another Ohio kid in the program!

Love reading that he likes to play defense. If you score 20, but the man you are guarding goes for 25, you’re -5.

Sounds like a great commitment for the Buckeyes! Going to need to gain some weight for the rough and tumble BIG10 but he's got time.

He doesn’t look to be the kind of player who will add a lot of weight. He will use skill, quickness, and anticipation to win matchups

Did you see the photo of his father? He's not finished growing.

Is / was his dad a baller?  Or his mom?

The youngster's ball-handling is impressive (as is the shooting).  Must have started pretty early.

His dad is John Mobley, who won two super bowls for the broncos as a linebacker. Listed at 6'1 236. His dad is also cousins with Cuttino Mobley of the NBA

Ranking of 2022, '23, and '24 commitments (per 247 composite):

39 (Middleton)
44 (Chatman)
44 (Mobley)
46 (Gayle)
47 (Thornton)
50 (Royal)

310 (Hardman)

HS

When Sensabaugh is your 8th highest ranked recruit on the list, you’re recruiting pretty damn good…

As one analyst said, they are all most likely multi-year players too. That really bodes well for the future when talented classes are stacked back to back and most everyone will be back the following year. When a player has a breakout year like Branham, and leaves early, that's a bonus for recruiting. Future players love seeing that potential for themselves as well.

How nice is it to see good players that grew up in Ohio want to come back to play at osu? With a handful of them around the country and an improving talent level in Ohio, H's recruiting is on a nice upward trajectory.

It'll be interesting to watch how osu does with '25 Darryn Peterson a top five, in state 6-5 guard whom every top school wants. He's only two classes away now, and those top 10 players have always been the toughest players to keep in state. Everyone is wondering when osu will take the next step and get a top 10 kid, and a homegrown player is the most likely one to commit to osu. That's without worrying if the nba will allow players to make the jump from high school again.

HS

Best way to keep him in is by showing out. And if the freshmen do that, it will bode well for getting him. Plus, Roy and Coach K can’t use their influence to snag him anyway like Coach K did with Luke Kennard

There is no greater moment in The Game’s history than giving the full one-finger salute to 107,601 Michigan fans at the same time.

HS
gr8bucks's picture

Unfortunately as you may have noticed the beat goes on with those two programs. No doubt it will come down to a couple schools in the big 10, the elite basketball schools, OSU and the NBA.

Osu has a good chance if things keep progressing.

I wonder if anyone nationally has done a deep dive on the changes in recruiting classes by school since NIL.

HS
stxbuck's picture

I doubt it, b/c records of illegal economic activities aren’t exactly voluntarily submitted for examination.

HS
Urbane Meijer's picture

I don't even know what you're saying Stxbuck.    What I am saying is that some schools may be benefitting from NIL more than others.

HS
stxbuck's picture

I’m saying you can’t compare previous bagman payments to recruits from Kansas, LSU, Louisville, etc, etc. to current NIL payments.

NIL=Now It’s Legal

HS
Urbane Meijer's picture

You're entirely missing my point.   The interesting thing is to see which schools have major drop offs now that NIL money is legal.   It's a sign that perhaps they had major illicit funding.   Meanwhile schools where  there's a huge jump are likely to have been playing it clean.

HS
stxbuck's picture

It’s not a sign of anything, boosters are just going to redirect their $$$ to collectives instead of whatever moneywash-like New Spring Church at Clemson-they previously had in place. Now illegal boosters don’t have to operate in the shadows.

HS
gr8bucks's picture

Some of the schools may have started a little early like LSU, but Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee and Arkansas recruiting has picked up, I don't know that it's a coincidence that they are from the SouthEastCheats. The future BIG, USC has been up and down, that may be a regional recruiting thing, when local talent stays home instead of going to Ucla or Arizona. Az definitely started early with Xavier's greaseball coach. Baylor suddenly bumped up, before nil, just like their football did before sanctions.

It's hard to say if it's nil related, I don't know if schools are breaking down their nil monies, to who gets what. That wouldn't be likely. But when you read about Miami buying players, maybe look at past history versus recent success and that may lead to the nil golden brick road.

HS
Urbane Meijer's picture

I think NIL will help the non football sports at traditional football powers.   Once you build a money funnel from boosters to players, it's easy to siphon off a tiny bit for other sports.  And in those sports even a little bit of extra cash is a big deal.

Why do I feel like 20 years from now I'm gonna be like, "This was the day one of my favorite Buckeyes committed."

And then my kids will be like "What the **** you talking about, dad?"

Our end of game woes have been largely due to spotty PG play. This might signal the end of the under 5 minute meltdowns. This is huge.

HS

We also have a guy named Bruce Thornton who is pretty good. And a guy named Taison Chatman coming in next year that is pretty good and can share the load at PG with Bruce.

I play, coach stays. He goes, I go.

HS
BuckeyeBen7.7's picture

I think this is what Horseshoe is referencing. Provided Chatman and Juno’s commitments stick, this will be the third class with a true point guard, and all three of the highly ranked variety.

150 lbs gonna need to build some muscle on that frame to get through the B1G.  But another great get for Coach.  With great talent, comes great expectations; for the player, the coach, the team, and the program.

Gonna predict he's at least 180 in 2 years when he dons the scarlet and gray—before OSU strength and conditioning starts with him.

He may also be a couple inches taller by then.

I think he already is a couple of inches taller than the 6' many list him at.  ESPN says 6'2" and the recruiting pic of him standing next to Holtmann, he's a solid inch taller (I believe Holt was listed at 6'1" when he played in college).

HS
gr8bucks's picture

He looks a couple inches shorter than his dad, that'd put him at 5-11, which is probably legit.

It's weird that bb makes the kids taller and fb makes them heavier than they are.
