It feels a bit like what we went through with Knowles.. it's not coaching, as much as it being the coach. Like these kids have known how to beat a trap/press since forever. Learned in in grade school, high school, AAU etc. Holtmann isn't suddenly teaching them the wrong way to beat the press..
At this point, it's between the ears. So like Knowles who doesn't have the right guys for his defense, imo Holtmann needs to lean into the limitations of this squad ( at least until it fixes itself).. You beat the press passing the ball, everyone knows that, and what we see time after time is guy sort of panicking and trying to dribble their way out of it, and then turnover.. imo just bring all 5 guys back on our side of the court to inbound the ball, move it around and get over half court... that's far from ideal from a "setup the offense" standpoint... but if you bring 5 guys back, and consistently beat the press, teams will stop pressing.
It’s 100% coaching and Holtmann has only his guys at this point. We haven’t been able to break a press since he’s been here. Therefore, this is all on Holtmann.
Let’s get McGuff from the women’s team to coach next year.
It’s 100% coaching and Holtmann has only his guys at this point. We haven’t been able to break a press since he’s been here. Therefore, this is all on Holtmann.
You OBVIOUSLY don’t know basketball. It’s Holtmanns fault Sueing didn’t catch the ball turn and go up the sideline?
Just agree to disagree.. it's between the ears, and has been for years.. I think he's done a poor job of getting the right people back there, and as I said I'd just send lots of help.. but it's not x and os, like coaching.. they aren't being coach poorly to beat the press, the same way Knowles isn't teaching our corners to not jam WR or safeties to fall in coverage... all of these kids are being Coached the right way, and most of them have been for almost a decade, long before they came to OSU.
It's about recognizing limitations.. which if you listened to the press conference, maybe there was a ray hope.. Sueing basically said he screwed up, and Coach Holtmann said he probably shouldn't have him back there.. that's at least progress..
Sueing panicked.. and you see the same thing from different players... it's not an easy skillset.. no different than guys who can knock down free throws for 35 minutes and then the last 5 minutes brick everything... between the ears..
Having said that, still up to Coach to recognize ( faster) when things are going sideways back there..
I remember another time the team couldn't break the press. They threw a pass to Brad Sellers in the middle and the press was broken everytime. After a few games, people quit pressing the buckeyes. I don't know if either of OSU big guys can pass like Sellers could, but it might be worth a few reps in practice to find out.
Any time you give a man something he doesn't earn, you cheapen him. Our kids earn what they get, and that includes respect - Woody Hayes
The only way to stop a team from pressing is to score off of it. We had a brief 3 minute span where players didn't execute well, but we were too passive against the press all game.
The reality though is, we didn't lose this game because of offense or turnovers (both teams had the same). We lost this game due to them being more aggressive (getting to the foul line) and getting outrebounded by 14.
Get ready for Holtmann's January collapse. Looks like it will arrive right on schedule. 6 to 10 games of mediocre to pitiful performances and then the big recovery for his usual 5th or 6th place finish in the conference. Hope I am wrong and we can reach 4th place.
On the heels of two straight losses, an "important week" is on the horizon for Ohio State men's basketball.
Yes, it definitely is. It feels strange to say this when it's only early January and there's still half the season left, but the record is already looking worrying. Every loss thus far has been a quality Quadrant 1 losses that are completely forgivable from a committee standpoint. But even though every individual loss is respectable, five losses in early January is still a lot of losses to have already on the record when you're barely into B1G play.
Listened to his show for about one minute today. Don’t even want to hear his voice any more. I got that way with Matta and Urban, too. I’m sure I’m not alone.
I enjoyed Matta's sarcasm about how his teams would be "get well cards" for slumping squads towards the end of his tenure, but yeah I used to tune into all the Holtmann pressers and shows and now I just can't do it.
@Shookster, At least Matta had past success, charismatic and he was likable. Holtmann has none of those qualities. He just makes excuses why they lose year after year and he never learns from past mistakes. Where are the Holtmann defenders? They always have their list of excuses for his performance.
Holtmann has a perfect out for another mediocre, underachieving season of hoops in year what . . . six??! FRESHMAN! Yup, too many youthful, inexperienced freshman. He'll say, "when they get more experience, we'll be better, more competitive." The seasons not half over and he's using that excuse now. He needs to be coaching in the NAIA at a school like Taylor, his alma matter or at a school like Gardner Webb where he went something like 44-55. He can't coach at his current level. He's proven it!
I haven't had a chance to watch them this season because of work, but they really seem to be struggling against teams with a pulse. Just can't close out games. Honestly, I never expected this from any Chris Holtmann team. He's been a bit of a letdown for the program.

Ceiling ? What ceiling? 6yrs and we don’t have shit to show for it, nothing, nothing at all!! I can’t stand the guy something is creepy about him, always gave me that child molester like vibe !!
When Holtmann finally called TO during the 2nd half collapse, he walked around aimlessly and said nothing to the team. He left it up to the assistants to come up with a press break strategy. Get rid of him if he can't come up with a press break on his own!!
Well i feel a bit like the lone voice in the wilderness. I have really enjoyed watching this Buckeye team and believe they have progressed well given five new frosh (who are generally exceeding expectations) and several new faces from the portal. The MD game was bad, but they have generally played well prior to this. I thought they played exceedingly well against Purdue given that Zed only played about 4 mins, up until the unfortunate play of the last 40 seconds. With these five new frosh and next year’s class, seems like the future is bright.
Yeah, I get the consternation of some folks because Holt hasn't gotten over the hump yet. No one likes excuses, legit or otherwise, but I do think there is optimism given the '22 and '23 recruiting classes.
Haven’t people been saying for a few years now “seems like the future is bright?” Every year it’s the same excuse—this is a young team, just wait until they gel! Then early March Madness exit is followed by “he’s got a great recruiting class coming in, just give him another year!” Then it’s “they’re a young team!” all over again. We’ve all seen this movie before why would we expect the ending to be any different this time around?
I repeat! He’s never won a regular season or conference championship. EVER! I really don’t see why people all of a sudden think he’s going to win something. I hope to eat some crow!
You will not, I repeat NOT be repeat NOT be eating any crow….this is going to be a terrible JAN for us Buckeye fans as Holtmann continues to drive the program off a fucking cliff …like on the Titanic as the band played Holtmann clapped his hands!!

You’ve pin pointed one or two plays. I’m citing 5+ years of watching Holtmann teams fail at breaking a press and closing out halves/games.

Go critique Penn State’s loss to Purdue sport.
Stay gold, Ponyboy.

I see no way Ohio State finishes 4th.
They were lucky to beat Rutgers at home!

We'll see how the rest of the season plays out, but the out right now is your second best player and one of only 2 post players out due to injury.

Let's keep our fingers crossed and Texas takes him.
I don't think we are lucky enough for that to happen, but maybe
"We didn't play with enough force tonight"
When will a 6th year senior be taught how to beat the press?
Oh! Mr “I hate Holtmann” is in the house. What a surprise!
Dont make up things.
Ive said I dont hate him, but I think weve seen his ceiling.

Stay gold, Ponyboy.
Said it before and I’ll say it again. Coach Holt is turning into Eldon Miller Lite, only without ever contending for championships…. Go Bucks!!
Holtmann is the James Franklin of college basketball.
Except that James Franklin won the B1G once. :P
We can't stop here; this is bat country...
WE ARE
PENN STATE
That’s right. You’re finally showing your true colors as a penn state fan.
Stay gold, Ponyboy.
He is hardwood version of Kirk Ferentz except with more talent, no nepotism and more offense than defense.

Eldon Miller would take Holtmann to school. Very good coach but not recruiter.
He would’ve DEFINITELY drawn up better plays to close out games.

We can have multiple great recruiting classes in a row but until we recruit a REAL head coach, we are going no where.
More like the lone voice from the guy locked up in the basement of the insane asylum

OSUCOM 2008 Graduate. Go Bucks!
Year 6
zero big ten championships
zero big ten conference championships
and THEN let’s get into his abysmal abject failures in March…losing to powerhouses like …oral roberts with two first round picks on the starting 5
lol some of you are so optimistic it’s adorably naive
Who were the 2 first round picks? What were the stats of the future 2nd round picks against Oral Roberts?
