Bronny James Reportedly Has Ohio State Among Top Three Schools, Expected to Decide on Commitment After Season

Is this valid? The last time there was a top three for him, LeBron went at the reporter pretty hard.

Also Holtmann blah blah blah. To quote the Sword of the Morning "so it begins".

HS

But.....but.....but......Holtmann sucks......

In all seriousness, let's not act like this would be anything more than a one year layover on the way to the NBA to play with his dad. I'd be ecstatic if the Buckeyes were the beneficiaries of that

HS
oprettyricky's picture

no guarantee he's nba ready after a year - he's only gong smewhere he would be handed 25+ min immediately let's be real

HS
DefenceWinsChampionships's picture

I'm not sure it matters if he is NBA ready or not. If LeBron opts out and publicly says he's signing/spending the rest of his career with whoever drafts his son, teams post-lottery will line up for the chance to draft him.

HS
Buckshot10's picture

Exactly. No one waits until they are ready to go to the NBA anymore

HS
Demosthenes's picture

It'd be a hell of a year though for the program. Bronny would be a cherry on top of one of the best classes we have had and make Ohio State probably the most watched games all year. Bronny has 12 million Instagram/TikTok followers and is a borderline top 25 player. Would be awesome for the program and create buzz not seen since Oden/Conley.

HS
oprettyricky's picture

Oh yeah I dont deny that - I would love to have him as a Buckeye

HS
gr8bucks's picture

Yeah but what would his rating be if his name wasn't lebronny? Certainly not in the top 75 in talent. If osu is in his top 3, it's certainly 3rd. His dad's in la and oregon has the money and his mom isn't coming back to ohio to watch him play 10-12 minutes a game.

He's a facilitator, the last thing an offensively starving team needs.

HS
MaxPowerBucknut's picture

If you really think Holtmann has anything to do with this, I don't know what to tell you.  Bronny would have put OSU in the top 3 if you or I were the coach.

HS

I wonder if Lebron will make an ultimatum that Bronny will come here if we hire the coach that he feels will develop his son the best. I still still feel like Bronny is getting the Lebron bump in the ratings. I have watched multiple games of his and he is good... but Top 40 good?

I'm not a talent evaluator by any means, but I love his game. He's very athletic with a great basketball IQ. He's also played on talented rosters, meaning he's never been able to rely on having the offense flow solely through him (which pads stats).

My thinking is Oregon for Nike, Ohio State for home state/dad, USC for Bronny (and all are Nike schools). However, I don't know if that'd be a good business decision. Pac 12 maybe 4th best conference and no one but diehards NCAAM and west coasters stay up for Pac12. USC and Oregon just as mediocre this year as OSU.

HS
OSUaboveallothers's picture

Agreed. The west coast definitely does not get the same exposure as us so if that’s what he’s after the OSU would be the logical choice.

I think he stays on West Coast.  Oregon...Nike...NIL. Already getting paid but there's always more room for more money. I wish him the best, it's tough being the son a superstar especially in the same sport.  Comparisons go on forever. Unfairly I might but it's the price of being the kid a famous athlete.

Wrong he was not born a billionaire, basketball open some doors but his business savvy is what put him in the billionaire club. And he's a loyal husband a great father He gives back definitely, how many damn athletes give back? Aaron Rodgers? Brett favre? So there you go and he will never ever shut up and dribble.

Creek - I generally agree with you but I have to disagree on this one. Look at Route Man Marv. If the rumors are true (and I believe they are) he was offered a nice chunk of cash to play out west at USC. Children of athletes have a better understanding of maximizing their overall money making and are less likely to jump at an early carrot.

Negativity is a choice I seldom make. Everything has a positive spin. Sometimes you simply have to look a little harder

HS
CreekBuck's picture

You could be right.  But my experience is the rich get richer and it's never enough.  Route Man Marv Dad has money but he also knows his son's value increases being at OSU. If NIL had been more of a thing 2 years ago, who knows where Junior would have ended up? To be honest I'm surprised OSU kept Tate and Innis.  But they can sell the WR brand better than anyone by just looking at the NFL. The smart ones play the long game.

Bronny surly doesn't need the money but he's already making money from his name.  So, ipso facto, he'll continue trading on his name-fame to make more money.  His own money that he controls.

We'll see. +1 Darksun

Neither does LeBron but he's getting every cent he can from the Lakers. Meanwhile they can't field a competitive team because they can't pay other players. Kobe did the same, he got his rings then wrung out every coin he could from LA.

It's not a matter of need but a matter of greed.

HS
dmos1128's picture

Junior grew up seeing people like Ted Ginn Michael Thomas etc, he made his own choice. Just like a lot of us we like to go against the grain when it comes to our dads. I'm sure he didn't go to his dad's number one choice for his own reasons. And it sure as hell didn't have anything to do with some damn NIL. It's not Quentin Ewers we're talking about over here. Starting to remember why I didn't come to this site for 2 years. Back in the days when they were saying CJ Stroud shouldn't be playing. Yeah that. Hell of a thing for the fans to be saying when that boy could have just stayed in Southern California with those beautiful girls and balled out. I actually wanted him to turn around and say I'm leaving Ohio State, these people calling for my head and I'm a superstar. Something's wrong here.

Dana Mosley

HS

While Oregon is the baby, OSU probably makes more money for Nike than Oregon. Idk about latest numbers, but I remember when OSU signed their Nike deal it was the largest in college sports.

HS

Random outside the box idea I had about this: Ask Lebron if he wants to take a year off from the NBA to coach OSU for 1 year until Bronny is draft eligible. Fire Holtmann. Lebron and Bronny come to columbus for a year while OSU performs a long term coaching search for the following year. I fully understand this is a ridiculous idea....but....is it? Lebron has said multiple times he wants to play with Bronny 1 year before he retires. This way he could save his legs for a year and then come back to whichever team Bronny is drafted by.

HS

Actually, I think the opposite has happened. I think he's being graded at a much higher scale than some of his peers.

For example, they have clips of him being crossed and that is the highlight people are sharing. Other top players let guys blow past them every other play as they aren't interested in D but no one says a peep.

I think he would be a great fit for tOSU.

HS
CreekBuck's picture

So you feel his 4 star rating is based on his name and not his play?  What rating would you give an average player? 3? 2? What's the scale/comparison  you're using for average? I think a 3 star is above average, probably a 2 star is above average in most high school sports. Most high schoolers don't even get 1 star. He's more than an average player.  I'm not saying he's a superstar but he's much more than average.

Muck Fichigan

HS
Greenbriar's picture

This would be great. OSU basketball is awful now. Barely worth following. Year of excitement, controversy, and attention--and maybe a better basketball team would be great. And it helps the Buckeyes have a higher profile in general, which will even help football. High school football players play and watch and follow basketball.

Take away his name, and not a single person on this board would have a problem signing a promising player from California.

HS

Ohio State men's basketball is currently a dumpster fire and I could see either Holtman bolting/getting fired after this season or the next, so Bronny should go to a more stable program or jump to the pro's altogether.

GO BUCKS

HS

Uh, no. If Bronny is good enough to play for the Buckeyes, he should come to Ohio State. Regardless of the state of the program, which we can all debate, it is still Ohio State. In my opinion, it is the best school for any number of reasons (not including athletics) and second place isn't even close.

Go Buckeyes!

The NIL ramifications for Ohio State could be huge. I could see LeBron upping his Buckeye donations game if his son wears scarlet and gray.

The pain of discipline or the pain of regret, take your pick

HS
12egulator's picture

I am very impressed with Bronny's development and work ethic. It was clear fairly early on, that he would never have his father's size and athleticism. He could have easily decided that since he would never be anywhere near as good as his father, that he instead should try another sport, or another passion like music or art.

Instead, he has willed his way into becoming a Top 50 player in his class, which several years ago many of us would scarcely believe. For those who think that Bronny is "average", Bruce Thornton was considered the #51 prospect in his class; would you rather have Bruce or Bronny?

Does NIL really effect BBall players as much bc of one-and-done? NIL would be more to keep them from declaring pro. Especially for Bronny.... realistically, he could sign with UA, Nike, Adidas, Gatorade, Powerade, etc... no matter what school he goes to. So any endorsement deals, especially with LeBron's connections, are still beneficial to the major companies.

Through the Lebron James Foundation, the NBA star has made donations worth more than $100 million altogether. He has helped organizations with different purposes to support basic amenities, education, and quality housing. From opening his school to granting I scholarships. Feb 27, 2022

HS
CreekBuck's picture

How much is his and how much is donors giving to the foundation that is then donated on his behalf? I'm not saying LeBron doesn't give some money but I'm saying I bet the majority is not his money.  The power isn't in one person writing one check,  one time (there are some exceptions, think old money endowments) but many people writing many checks many times. Either case I believe it's generally for good causes.

Muck Fichigan

HS

I hate to be so cynical, but Lebron and his business advisors are so savvy that they know the "optics" of those donations will only add to their coffers in the end game. Image is everything. It's more of an investment to him. Unpopular, but that's how I see it....dv away!
