Ohio State Feeling Zed Key’s Absence Following Interior Struggles in Maryland Loss

Its always something with this program.

Why is it the "glue guy" gets hurt and these teams always stuggle...?

HS
osufantoo's picture

Going into the season with one experienced post and an one inexperienced freshman is just ridiculous anyways for a top notch program that OSU wants to have.  Who couldn't see that lack of depth at the post was going to be a serious issue even without an injury occurring?

HS
NWObuckeye's picture

That problem is Holtmann

Different year, same ole Holtmann.  The thing is, Chris is easy to like he just isn't an elite BB coach.  This season is like all of the previous ones (except the Covid season where the postseason was canceled.)  it has started the "end-of-season" collapse. Limp into the BIG tournament and an early exit from the NCAA only to see its stars bolt for the NBA.

It's curious that people after 5 full seasons of seeing what his teams are and watching it unfold like it has every season under him are actually hoping for a different result.  That is the first sign of insanity, keep doing the same thing and expect a different result.  I refuse to watch the same thing happen year after year.  Doesn't matter how talented the team is or isn't, this is what they do.

You WIN with people.

Hoping for a different result and expecting different results are two very different things.   I think we all hope things will be different but at this point very few expect it to be different.  One can always hope. Without hope what's the point?

Zed makes a difference, this team lacks fundamentals they make mistakes youth players shouldn't make, they foul too much.the coach allows a freshman to shoot anytime he wants even really bad shots and shoot 32% from the floor vs Maryland yet keep jacking it up. The Duke & SD State are the only games this team should have lost!! Horrible in game coaching!

HS
BuckeyeLurker0509's picture

Lol at depending on Zed Key to make a difference

this program is stuck on a treadmill in quicksand …going nowhere fast and sinking

HS
wigmon's picture

I appreciate the effort Okpara gave against Purdue, but the reason Edey only had 16 points is because we sent a double every time the ball got into the post to get the ball out of his hands.  Not sure Key would have fared much better, but with more fouls to give, we probably would have let them try to bang with him a little.

Zed is an important piece to the team.  Hopefully he returns soon.

HS
stantmann's picture

Zed is a stud. Hopefully he comes back soon. In the meantime, play Okpara as much as possible. Coach took him out when he got in foul trouble, and didn't put him back in until the end of the Maryland game. I hate that Coach doesn't like big men. He's wasting his talent on the wood.

Okpara will be gone this year via the portal if Coach doesn't start playing him. If he does play him, Chris will see he has a star in waiting, and it'll pay off come tournament time. But alas, our coach likes small ball but without the pressure - Doesn't make a lick of sense.

Buckeyes need Zed badly, but they also need Felix to gain valuable minutes.

HS
Blackcoffee's picture

Felix isn't going anywhere after this year, whether he fets 12 or 30 minutes per game. He spent his last year of high school at Link Prep playing behind Tarris Reid, who is now Hunter Dickinsons backup, and seeing probably what amounts to less playing time than Felix.

Felix is not a project the size of the project Ibrahima Diallo was. Felix has tremendous upside and will get more than his share of playing time. Good hustle, plays with a chip, and has good connection with Holtmann.

Maybe next year you see a lineup with Zed and Felix on the floor together? Now cheer up and have a good day

HS
stantmann's picture

He should be playing more now, he should have played more against Maryland. Chris' track record is not playing big guys when he has them. I hope you're right and I'm wrong. You have a good day too, and smile, it is infectious.

Oh, don’t tell the fire Holtmann crowd that losing one of your best players to injury does in fact hurt a team’s ability to be successful. They don’t like it when facts get in the way of their narrative.

HS
OUatown's picture

Funny! The fact he had TWO post players going in this season. In 6 years he’s never had quality depth in the post, but that’s for a different discussion! One being a true is beyond laughable roster construction. Anyone with a clue could see it a mile away. Zed gets hurt or is in foul trouble and we are in trouble. My 2 cents. Which I know is worth 0!

HS
wigmon's picture

He recruited at least 4 bigs in the portal this last year.  They all chose different locations.  The need was recognized, but no decent center wanted to come here and play backup for a year.

HS
TLB's picture

And don't let the fact that Kaleb Wesson has been Holtmann's best big man in his Ohio State tenure.....a guy he did not recruit.

HS

Sheesh, Whisky lost to Illinois the other day sans their 5 Tyler Wahl and apparently many Whisky fans are using this as an excuse. Shame on them. I mean he only averages 13 and 6 per night. Only. For shame

Hell, Hoosier fans are bemoaning their loss of Race Thompson, 8 pts 6 reb per game, and almost have the chutzpah to attribute his absence to their loss at home vs Northwestern, a team, btw, the Buckeyes beat in Evanston by what? Like 40 points. Eze chutzpah these Hoosier fans.

Btw, Holtmann gots drip
Go Bucks!

Chris Holtmann has a lot of family members who post here . I don’t know how you defend 6 years of Big Ten futility. Forget March play

HS
TheShookster's picture

It is what it is...the dude is a good recruiter but a terrible coach. A nice recipe for winning 20-ish games a year and making the NCAA tournament, but not one for actually winning anything that matters. Like a conference title or a conference tournament (which 7 B1G teams have done since he got hired but not Ohio State).

He might luck into a Sweet 16 like he did at Butler in 2017, but probably not. Our best case scenario is some dumb program hires him away because Gene won't fire him...I mean my god they actually extended him lol

HS

Probably for using words like "terrible" to describe him as a coach which extinguishes credibility.  Fair enough to think that he hasn't met standards for the OSU program, but at the very least you would need to acknowledge him as an "average" B1G coach given that he routinely finishes in the top half of the conference and makes the tourney every year.

HS
BuckeyeLurker0509's picture

That’s good enough for Gardner Webb.

not my alma mater

Six years, zero big ten titles, zero big ten conference titles, never made it past the round of 32 in March despite having NBA players on the roster and now loses to Minnesota, the worst team in the big 10…the most overpaid person in the state of Ohio. I wish we had the same standards for our basketball team as we do for football, because then I wouldn't have to watch him cluelessly fumble away another season. 7 different big ten teams have won the conference since he was hired.

I might point out he couldn't even make it to the round of 32 as a #2 seed.

It takes some good effort to fail that badly.

The sky is falling Holtmann defenders…not nearly as many defending one of the worst hires in the history of OSU basketball ever….the million dollar question is …can this bum lose 10 in a row again and keep job..even after getting the most undeserving contract extension in OSU history?…Wait and see , either way more misery and disappointment to come…we are not even the best program in the state any more …crooked ass Sean Miller came back in with a patchwork roster and has  Xavier up to 12 this week…he can coach…Holtmann, well , he claps his hands!!….GO Bucks!!

I want Rick Pitino in here. He knows how to pay people and his name carries weight with all recruits. His style is accepted now. Make the move!!

HS
TheShookster's picture

It would never happen, but from a purely coaching standpoint it would be like going from a can of Manwich to filet mignon

"We didn't play with enough force tonight"

HS
Jimmy Polio's picture

Pitino has one big job left in him before he retires, right? If I were in charge and and we saw another first round exit I would go after him. Then there's his son Richard, although he might be a step sideways...

So what happens if we get the same result this year? Are we stuck like this until Smith retires? I would prefer things work out and have a healthy team make a deep run thanks to its newfound ability to break a press and hold double-digit leads. I would also like to rip bongs and bang hookers at the office but I'm not holding my breath.

HS
TheShookster's picture

So because Zed was out we couldn't outrebound a 6 foot 1 guard. Got it coach, appreciate your time.

The boys better be ready on Thursday. Minnesota might be 0-4 in conference play but they have been better as of late and Dawson Garcia / Jamison Battle are pretty damn solid players.

To all the "don't let facts get in the way of a narrative" people out there, this was a Maryland team who Michigan beat by over 30 points but I guess little ole Ohio State just couldn't get it done without their 3* power forward masquerading as a center

"We didn't play with enough force tonight"

It’s also the same Maryland team that put a whipping on 13-2, #16 Miami earlier in the season. You can pick and choose games for any team, but this Maryland team is a good team when they decide to show up.

HS
wigmon's picture

Yeah, guessing Holtmann told the guys not to box out and fight for rebounds. We need a coach that will tell guys to rebound.

HS
Jvillebuck's picture

Even w/o Zed Key Maryland's smallest player (Jahmir Young 6'0") shouldn't get 11 rebounds not to mention 30 pts.

BasketBucks are doing their thing to get victories, and have made mistakes in the process

The abject ‘delusion’ from *fans* that you will achieve a National Title Contender year-in and year-out is stunning

one commenter did say something rational for the times we live in (glaring at all y’all need-to-bet-on-college sports persons) — get the crusty old Petino (sp.) who has proven he can produce with payola and connections — since it’s basically NCAA-approved now
