Holtmann waited too long to bring in Gayle in the second half. He always figures it out, but usually it's about five minutes too late. Needed somebody like Gayle who could slash off the dribble sooner in the Maryland game to neutralize some of their pressure. Gayle's shot is still a work in progress, but he has the hard part of being able to get his own shot down. He can break people down off the dribble, something Thornton has not been able to do consistently at all. Teams are going to continue to press full court and play tight man to man against us until we find a way to get penetration. Another team full of marginal dribblers is a staple of all Holtmann teams. When it's not in Sensabaugh's hands it gets real dicey quick.
We were getting killed again on the boards and he never really brought Okpara back after the picked up three fouls in the first half (sat nearly the entire second half). Maryland got too many easy baskets in the paint. I guess McNeil must have reinjured his ankle. He had 8 points in the first three minutes of the game, and sat nearly the entire second half. Never scored again in the final 35 minutes. I can't even remember him taking a shot. I don't understand Holtmann's thinking. Never have. I know we can't continue to get out rebounded by 15 and 20 every game, mostly on the offensive glass. No way to win like that. Don't get to the free throw line either. Holden needs to be getting more minutes as well.

Explain the Holden comment - every time he’s in the game he doesn’t do much but pick up his dribble at inopportune. Doesn’t seem like he can slash against Big Ten teams the way he could in the Horizon league.
He's definitely a work in progress, him and Likekele. I don't think either one of them has any idea what their role is and neither does Holtmann unfortunately.

Meechie would’ve been nice to have on the roster still! Just dropped 26-6-6 as South Carolina upsets UK tonight. Had 25 in another game. Pretty sure he started the first 5 games in single figures but has since scored double digits in every game after.
