not prepared, not motivated, not conditioned...all of these fall on one guy...the head coach

Faster, tougher, and more violent...

We can make arguments for both sides of the not prepared part. But the other two things are you just reaching for straws to put the coaching staff on blast.

Not motivated? Making mistakes or not, our guys play hard, start to finish. Diving on the floor after loose balls, making extra effort on the glass etc. They might not always make the play, but their effort is unquestionable. Watch the game and this is clear.

And not conditioned? We have 3 guys that average nearly 30 minutes per game. Sensabaugh has been playing 30 for the last three weeks. Yet at the end of the game, they all seem to be as fresh as ever. They’re still making shots, they’re still hustling.

Poor defensive coaching, horrible offensive sets, poor game preparation, piss poor game management under 5 minutes are major reasons why this team gets outscored in the second half of games. This team could not even handle two inbound play calls under 2 seconds without losing the game. Head coach and coaching staff's failure to address these issues over the years and resolve them are the main reason OSU has very limited success in March. Three games, UNC, Purdue and Maryland were lost as a result of coaching staff's inability to educate their players how to break a full court press.

We have a head coaching problem and have for years. Holtmann is a great recruiter and a nice guy, but nice guys don't win you tough games. Closing out games has been a struggle for Holtmann for much of his tenure. To me two things are very apparent: there is no formulated offensive sets. Lots of 1v1 with 4 other guys standing around. We don't seem to run an offensive set in games late in the second half. The second is turnovers in pressure situations. We have consistently ranked outside the top 125 in turnovers/game over the last 5 seasons. Impossible to win basketball games that way.

Lots of turnovers are caused by the 1v1 mentality. Guys try to dribble past/through defenders instead of using screens, hitting guys cutting to the basket, passing inside/out, etc. It’s just “give the ball to X and let him try to score.” There’s also too much 1v1 against pressure defenses, which causes lots of problems.

The problem has been mentioned in both of the last two games by the commentators. The offensive sets that Ohio State does run take time to develop. Often a couple of ball exchanges up top, then an on ball screen after that. With teams pressing or applying full court pressure  starting in the second half, we are often down to 20 seconds or less in the shot clock by the time we start getting into any kind of offensive set, which again takes time. So then we end up with rushed or forced (bad) shots and complete lack of offensive flow.

To combat this, they need to beat the press quickly and efficiently. The way to stop another team from pressing is to get a couple of easy buckets off the press. So far we haven’t demonstrated any ability to routinely beat full court pressure. Until we do, teams are going to keep doing it against us, with similar results to what we’ve seen.

Watching the Purdue game live, it was pretty shocking how much better the offensive sets Purdue ran were than ours. Although the word shocking might be a bit overkill...what you're saying makes a lot of sense, and I would be interested to see if the offense flows better if they make a real effort to push the ball up court.

Like everything in the Holtmann era, it's a double edged sword. Our offensive sets just look awful (especially live, Purdue's offensive sets were like Monet paintings compared to what we were doing) but then Brice or Justice will bail them out by hitting some crazy shot and then you look at KenPom and we have the most efficient offense in the entire country. It's an epic mindf**k

Bingo Nickstar!   No structure to the offense at all.  This is the same issue at the end of Matta’s tenure as well.  No organization to it, just pick up game one on one basketball.   When other team picks up intensity they have no structure to fall back on.

"Ohio State has plenty of improvements to make defensively if it wants to compete for a Big Ten title and make some noise in March. "

I chuckled a bit when I read this line.

yes, can't let a 6'0" Maryland point guard grab 11 rebounds against you (in addition to his 30 pts scored).

They've been awful at the end of the first half as well in these losses and some wins.

I don't see how this is different from what we've seen the past few years. I'd love to be wrong, but this is a mostly new lineup with the same issues as last year. At least what I'm seeing.

I am going back to previous comments about basketball and just change the responses to numbers - because the issues are the same, instead of having to type over and over I will just assign a number to "injuries blah blah, second half collapses blah blah. we're working through it blah blah."  Folks, doing the same thing and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity. We're already there this season and we will hear the same excuses for the next 60 days, with just enough good games thrown in to tease us. Oh well, we're a football school.

Our offense looks bad, everybody is lost, give it to one person and everyone else stands around and watches until the shot clock is about to run out and they hurry up and try to get a shot off.

If the official makes the correct call in the Rutgers game on the last play the numbers look even worse, the record in reality should 1-3 and three less points scored. The blown call is a gift that keeps on giving.

The question becomes, what is being changed up in the locker room in terms of halftime adjustments, especially on the defensive end. You also have a scheme issue on offense where guys don't move much without the ball. The game turns into either a high screen / roll set or Sensabaugh or Sueing driving toward the lane and taking shots. It shouldn't be a conditioning issue, few guys are playing 35 minutes a night and there are multiple days between games.

I see several ______________ here commentating.

(use your imagination)

do the names "Amir Williams" and "Marc Loving" ring a bell?

There aren't any of those type players on this 2022-2023 roster.

I was downvoted often by the homers in here because I felt that Amir Williams should have been sat down and watch Cody Zeller  tape of how a B10 center should hustle. That  guy was one of the reasons for my "just here for the beer" meme..........
