You know you’re right, I call it the January swoon. But it’s not a swoon at all - it’s the big ten conference schedule. I don’t even watch the games anymore. No fun

They are too busy trying to convince us that Holtmann is WAY better than Matta. Just wait until Holtmann gets a team like the '86 Celtics to play a college schedule. He could easily make the Sweet 16 with Bird, McHale, and Parish.

Plenty to criticize all around, but Holtman wasn’t the one missing all those layups and close shots. And how many times did they leave the rat faced kid open on the pick and roll even after repeatedly being told to stop over helping. Plenty of blame for both the staff and players tonight. No energy, lack of hustle, and poor shooting won’t win many games.

I was a student when Coach Miller was the coach. My brother was staff at the university and part-time student. Jimmy Crum called for Eldon to be let go on his news broadcast. Weaselly little sawed off old fucker - wasn’t his place to editorialize regardless of his feelings. Don’t make yourself the news.

When they had a news conference my brother went down to the arena and went in. Some low level guy said this is for press only - my brother was a full sized guy and told him to stick it up his ass. Then he yelled at Jimmy Crum and said “ this is my university and my coach and a horse’s ass like you wouldn’t even have a job in this town without Ohio State.” Then he turned around and stomped out.

NWObuckeye

HS
Bukirob's picture

Yep.  3 years ago I posted about how his teams tended to limp to the finish line and performed poorly in the NCAA. 2 years ago I thought his contract should not have been renewed.  I can't tell you how many times people would say he's a good coach, a great representative of the school... yes, he is all those things but those are BASELINE requirements of the job.  You are hired to WIN games.  I was so against the extension because you've painted yourself in a corner with his buyout.

I think there is a good chance that Gene Smith ends up as the B1G Commissioner.  Should that happen, a NEW AD may end up pulling the trigger and parting ways with Holtmann.  Now, that preassumes they fall apart as a team which feels like what is happening.  IF they can find a way to right the ship then all bets are off.  The problem they have is the next 7 games have 5 road games and the 2 home ones are against Iowa and #18 Wisconsin.  There is a real possibility of losing several up to ALL of those games.  Only UM has a worse over all record.

You WIN with people.

I don’t think there are any excuses about this one. The All Access made this worse. Holtmann wanted to play with pace and his players can’t execute. He had a half time speech about ball and player movement and the first possession second half was a one pass McNeil iso? As a coach, if his players don’t listen to him, then something is wrong. Also, his defensive coach may as well be a cardboard cutout - zero added benefit while we allow 50% shooting to a bottom big ten team. This was an abject failure by all parties. Also in 4 minute timeouts, repeating the same 2 items in different tones and cadences, doesn’t really count as coaching in my book.

Lets have the usual excuses from the Holtmann supporters. If Gene Smith had any stones he would pull the plug on this loser and let Diebler take over for the rest of the year. Yes, he is totally unproven but he could not be possibly any worse than Holtmann and may even provide a spark to this team. The bad part about it is it's so predictable. The old saying "the ball always seems to find the weak spot at the most inopportune times". Sueing shouldn't be anywhere near the court ever inside of three minutes in either half. Naturally, he falls flat on his back and lets the guy get to the rim with Likekele left on an island in no man's land. Him and Key can do some things in pressure situations that I thought weren't humanly possible, but then I remember I've lived through the likes of Musa Jallow, Justin Ahrens, Meechie Johnson, and Seth Towns recently and have seen it all before. At least they didn't play 40 minutes a game like Sueing and regardless were never even close to Sueing quality in boneheadedness. He's in a class all by himself. Holtmann's loyalty and love for Justice Sueing will be the very thing that gets him fired at the end of this season.

- Bobby Boucher is the best Foosball QB since Joe Mantegna -

HS
stantmann's picture

Sueing plays good defense, he deserves credit for that. I've said it all year, he needs to know his limitations on offense. He is not "the man", he is an "other" player. Play good defense, set some good screens, and take the easy shots when presented. When he shoots too much, Texas Tech is an exception, it's not a good sign for the Bucks.

I really dont get the fans' love for Key. He is too short to guard any legit big man inside. He offers no presence and teams can get to rim at will against this team. He has trouble locating the ball when it comes off the rim. He is decent hustle guy that is a bench player.

This team has very little upside to win multiple games in the dance.

I would rather see Holtmann play all the young guys 30 minutes a game. Thornton, Sensabaugh, Gayle, Okpara. Sueing as the other starter. Have Key, McNeil and Holden sub in. Likelele and Brown offer zero offensive value so there is little need to give either very many minutes.

Looking at the stats, I'm reminded of the article that said we're not shooting enough threes. Maybe that's true.

Another thing I noticed, is that Thornton kept stopping his dribble on his drives to the basket. I thought that kid Cooper #55 outplayed Thornton at times, was physical with Thornton, and quite frankly that should never happen to a kid with Thornton's ability. Thornton wasn't aggressive enough and he's a much better player than is Cooper.

No idea how people are still defending Holtmann. I have always liked him but he's got no schematic advantage of any kind, he's a horrible strategic coach and his players appear to be disinterested. Which is to say nothing of the fact that we are in year 6 and have yet to advance beyond the round of 32 or even sniff a B1G title. Oh, and we have completely wasted several years with 1st round NBA talent. If a team with Liddel and Washington couldn't win, why would expect this year to be different? We literally have one year with a guy like Sensabaugh, probably our best talent in years, and we are fucking 10-6 and just lost to the worst team in the league - at home. This should be unacceptable and I would love to a hear a cogent argument as to why Holtmann deserves another 1/2/3 years.

We can't stop here; this is bat country...

The first four losses were at least to teams that will almost certainly make the Dance - the last two losses are NOT good - Maryland is a bubble team at best - Minnesota won't even make the NIT - we were very fortunate to beat Rutgers otherwise we would be 1-4 right now in B1G - if we don't turn things around quickly this could very easily end up being an NIT team - and maybe THAT will finally wake Gene up and be the impetus for him to pull the trigger and turn the program over to someone else

That game was so embarrassing viewing it from the Fox Sports One miked up sideline. Anyone else think Holtman sounded like he had no idea how to coach and the Minnesota coach was actually calling set plays and drawing things up on a dry erase board during timeouts. It was so different between the two. One looked like a coach - the other looked like a deer in head lights. Also -  during our own timeout - Holtman called no play in the timeout and the team looked clueless coming out of the time out and got a terrible shot off. I am done with this guy. He is clueless. Has no in-game skill sets. He spent more time scratching his head and saying - let’s go - vice doing anything worthwhile during the timeouts. This Fox Sports One view of the game should give reason to anyone who just gives it to Gene Smith to say - watch this and tell me why on earth we are paying this guy so much to do this!

You’re absolutely right. So many games have proven that Holtman has no in-game coaching credentials. All he knows how to call is ISO. That’s it. He can’t coach. And we are paying him how much!!!

It’ll be interesting to see if there is a large drop in attendance if this continues. Holtmann will have to go hand out free meal coupons at Cane’s again to try and get butts in seats.

At the end of close games seems like Sueing is the good, bad & ugly.  His falling down tonight in the last 8 seconds of the game allowing his man to get to the basket relying on Thornton to block the last shot of the game (yes, it was a clean block, but the dude should have never gotten to the hoop). Sueing's t.o. against Purdue in the last 25 seconds, his brain fart in the last few seconds against MI last year etc.

When Gayle was in he was bad tonight imo. Took an ill advised shot you could see Holtmanns reaction to and ran a guy over Earl Cambell style going to the bucket. He was going with his best guys in a tight game and Gayle wasn't it tonight imo. But honestly no one else was either

Good thing we signed Holtmann to a 3 year, $3.5mm/year contract extension last spring.  All that means is they're less likely to get rid of him because of the higher buyout.  Just awful!

Realistically, with the transfer portal if you fire him this year, the team is decimated for at least four years akin to what happened to IU when Kelvin Sampson got canned. As a Holtmann apologist, this game made me eat crow. He doesn’t seem to coach in-game, his defensive coach is completely disengaged and his players don’t listen to him,  but if you fire him mid season you lose the young kids who may not have bought in and the recruiting class goes to shit. I’d rather be middling for two years, get rid of him thoughtfully, than set the program back 4-6 years, and this group will be even more miserable than they already are.

HS
OCbuckeye70's picture

@costinjr- they don't listen to him I agree. I said in the in game thread it was funny watching the timeouts where in one instance literally no one was looking at him or paying any attention.

Remember how having Suing back and healthy for this year was going to make all the difference. It seems that is  what some supporters of Holtmann said before the season started. Well, he is back and what a difference. The losing continues and it is a new way every game. The only constant is worst coach in the Big 10. Holtmann.

Why does so many posts say how he is a good recruiter???? Ok this years class has/will have quality to play near the top of the league. Other class that I call good was Liddell's. But EJ was the only one that stuck. The rest of the classes in his 6 years are not ones that will get you to the top of the conference. His best year was his first with Thad's kids. Not ready to bail on him yet but this is not going anywhere.

HS

I'm in the same boat, especially because if this is true then it's just even more of an indictment on his poor coaching. And the fact that he hasn't gotten a SINGLE competent big man in 6 years is inexcusable. Watching these undersized teams year after year is getting tiring.

Bad shooting nights happen to every team, but these guys looked flat from the opening jump. The offense seemed to regress to the first two weeks of the season, when they were leaning on talent alone to get through those first three cupcakes. Unorganized, lifeless basketball lacking in creativity. The frustration of the players was visible and the whole thing was ugly to watch. I didn't see any sense of urgency from the bench at any point.

And yes, that was a clean block at the end, a bad call to top of a number of them tonight. But we shouldn't have been in the position and we absolutely deserved to lose. Just awful.

I solved my basketball worries. After that last good Matta team with Lighty and Diebler that played hard and sound basketball, I just accepted that we are a football school and if basketball is good, that’s nice, and if not well then I read a book or watch a movie and get ready for spring training baseball. It’s one of the better life decisions I made in the last decade. Do you think they really care at Kentucky or Kansas that their football teams started 5-0 and ended 7-6. They don’t care because those are BASKETBALL schools. We don’t need to care about Holtmann because we are a FOOTBALL school.

Little Mikey's picture

Dear Chief, Well there is a reason not to be excellent at both - because we are a football school. I will wait silently over here humming the Final Jeopardy theme while you identify the schools that are great at football and basketball. Like a unicorn or a dodo, you can't find one. And strike that, it's not about just being great. It's about the narrative around your school. Kentucky and Duke and North Carolina and Kansas are basketball schools. Nobody disputes that - they have earned it over a generation or more. Alabama and Georgia and Clemson and Ohio State are football schools. Do all of these schools have good to great teams in other sports on a regular or semi-regular basis - yes, sort of. Does anybody in the sports universe sit around and wonder how the Alabama basketball team is going to do next year. Not one. Is everybody wondering what Saban is going to do after missing the CFP this season - yeah, millions do. And why do they do that? Because Alabama is a football school, and so is the Ohio State University.

Michael

Ohio State has the 12th best basketball program all time.

That has nothing to do with whether we’ve won 8 NCs in football or zero or 25 synchronized swimming championships or zero.

HS

I am going to choose NOT to hang my basketball hat on 1960-1962. We laugh our asses off at ttun because their last undisputed national championship was in 1948. Pointing to 1960 and thumping our chest is equally pointless. And does it FEEL like we have the 12th best basketball program of all time? Whatever that means I'm not feeling it.

I will stand by my point that we are a football school. Because we are.

I posted after last game. No urgency, intensity, or on court leadership.  Same today.  Who is to blame? Half court defense stepped it up with 5 to go, played aggressive, saw a chance to win.  Where was it the other 35 minutes.  Who is to blame?  I have been critical of Holtman, but the players also need to step it up.  Play to win instead of trying to get theirs

The second top 5 recruiting class is still in HS. Up until recently his recruiting has been sub par if you want to compete for league titles. I took 5 years to get a good class together. Most of upperclassmen is transfers. His inability to get better players in here before now has hurt, especially a big man.

HS
costinjr's picture

Fuzz this is not the same as football. Matta got Oden and Conley when IU was in the dumps between coaches. His other class was all Ohio guys. Typically if OH HS basketball is good. So is osu. We’ve never recruited out of state well except for one or two players per class

HS
OSUAlumInAZ's picture

I'm not part of the fire-the-bum contingent, but with each game, I'm one step closer. The steps are getting bigger too. I've only held out because his last two recruiting classes have been very good, despite not getting a big man. But from a tactical viewpoint, he is average.

Not comparing it to football...go back and write down every recruit Holt has brought in since he arrived here. I look at that list of players, some who never panned out, some left left early, and some that were good, but you think about how their abilities as players and I feel his first issue has been recruiting a player good enough to give him a chance to play for league titles. This years freshmen, yes they are good and should compete in years to come. And yes he has a nice class coming in next year. Still not sold on his ability to coach at this level either.

What a fitting photo on the lead up Sensabaugh taking a contested shot! As he shot 32% 8-21 from the floor again for 2 straight games Seuing was a little worse at 31% 4-15 from the floor.  Holtman needs to peel some paint off the locker room and tell these super stars that contested shots are BAD SHOTS!!

Please, please Gene Smith before you retire. Dump Holtmann. Buckeye basketball can be relevant again with the a good coach to lead it. I want to see a team that is solid in fundamentals and has a real game plan and desire to win. If you have those things it can make up for not having a team of 5 star talent. OSU will never beat the blue bloods for talent but the talent it has now will get the job done with a coach that knows his shit. Holtmann is really outclassed and should be back at a lower level coaching. This team is floundering again as all his teams do in January. It is the time of year when the cupcakes are gone and it is all Big 10 teams and REAL coaching and tactics are needed to win. So what if we lose some of these guys in transfer. It may happen anyways the direction the team  is headed. Get this boat going the right direction because it is taking on water now.
