Holtman sure didn’t like - as it made people realize in full view what everyone was already thinking - he has no clue how to coach. The Minnesota coach sounded like an actual coach during timeouts- Holtman did not.
I came away thinking his team doesn’t listen to him. At the end of the game the were obviously going to foul 21, and Zed was 5 feet away and didn’t even know the ball was inbounded. Poor execution by the whole team and staff tonight.
Holtmann correctly told them to foul on the cut. If we just grabbed him in could be 2 foul shots and the ball back to Minnesota. When the guy didn’t move the plan couldn’t be executed
Football or basketball I always have my tv muted. Can't stand listening to announcers speak about non-essential items, instead of calling the game and what is actually happening. After the Bucks missed a couple of bunnies toward the beginning of the game, i switched stations. The only thing I didn't like when watching was the split screen. I want to see the "full screen" action of the game-could care less about what the coaches are doing.
I loved it since it exposed Holtmann for the poor coach that he is. He provides very little substance and near zero direction. He is nothing more than a glorified highly over-paid cheerleader masquerading as a basketball coach.
I agree. It was stark just how much better Ben Johnson coached his team than Holtmann. It was really revealing. It seemed to me like his team kinda tuned him out. The thing is, this team has enough talent on it to be really really good, but Holtmann is holding them back.
Didn't care for it...split screen was not good, made play screen too small. Didn't need both coaches talking at the same time. However can see whether the coaches get any messages across to players in the huddle...would say MN coach won that game tonight also.
You would think with technology they could have at least shrunk the size of the coaches shots to using 1/4 to 1/5th of the screen only.
If they really want to know how fans like it or not simulcast on another channel and get the ratings for the channels during the game. Or open up voting on their website during the game.
I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan!
I think the either-or discussion is irrelevant. It's not very likely that we're going to see any more games without commercials. This was a one time novelty.
It was very good coverage, it reinforced the strong suspicion that Holtmann is a clueless coach unable to coach at this level. Gene Smith gave Holtmann another 3 years on his contract. Gene Smith needs to retire or find his new job as Big Ten Commissioner.
I ended up enjoying it, up until Holtmann repeats one line, like "win the possession" then tails off and an assistant has to step in and actually coach. Team has tuned him out too, late game TO, Holtmann called a set, that if they made a basket for them to full court press and Justice just jogs back to the other end of the floor. No sense of urgency or energy plagues this team and we've seen this now from Holtmann teams every year, just a waste of talent and a waste of another season.
Yeah I was the same when I kept saying Holtmann has zero trophies or tournament success to allow him any cushion. He’s got a great recruiting class next year so I lean towards giving him one more year but he needs finish solid at the very least this year. Should be on the hot seat next year if not this one.
Same here, for some reason those clowns thought Holtmann was a messiah…now it’s time for him to go….and all you hear is crickets..after this January losing streak gets out of …he’s gone!!
I don't do harangues, but I am on record saying someone else needs to be coaching this team. This behind the scenes look did nothing to convince me otherwise. I actually started to pity the guy as things turned against him and he seemed not to really know what to say to the team. But he did manage a lot of, "You understand? Understand me! Okay guys? You understand?"
Personally, I'd fire him for repeatedly banging his head into a wall (fans too) by thinking he really has a game-changing " piece" in Likekele, and then proceeding to overuse what is really just a an off-the-bench, short-stint, assignment player to rest Thornton, or to break the rhythm of a hot-shooting opponent - not that I've actually witnessed the latter in his skill set, but people insist it's there. I do know that many games he leaves you with a glaring example of how he gunks up the offense by swinging the ball instead of taking the very obvious 3-pointer that everyone in the arena, and everyone at home, immediately notices. Holtman's brought talent in this year, and has more on the way next season, but I'm fully unconvinced he knows what to do with it.
And somewhere CHB smiles, knowingly...while echoes of "we got him now' ring in their ears... It was always about PoR. Those poor useful idiots...
So nice to see Holtmann exposed. Kudos to those who have known all along that Holtmann ain't the answer to Buckeye basketball--unfortunately. Holtmann must have some "dirt" on Gene Smith to have gotten that extension (insert evil laugh here).
Just play. Have fun. Enjoy the game. -- Michael Jordan
The all access feed was on a 4K channel on Direct TV usually reserved for pay. The picture and color itself was stunning. I’m not a basketball guy but Holtman less than inspires me if I’m in the huddle.
Everyone will be happy if Fox execs provide both options? One thing I've learned is that you can't make everyone happy, especially sports fans. If they managed to win every game in every sport in which they completed, fans would start complaining about style points.
Only improvement is to show mostly just coaches voices during play. Not splitscreen images. Only show coaches images when play is stopped or they are arguing or something significant.
Holtman has lost his team! Kids know when they are being led by a phony, they hear it from fans, family, other players and most of all team mates. If they don't fire him they will lose most of this class through the portal and prob let all of the next one out of their commitments. Unless he makes a monumental turn around time to clean house again! Fire him now and find out if Diebler can coach!
Oddly I heard Holtman tell McNeil not to take bad shots and told Sueing not to settle for shots yet he threw his hands up over Sensabaugh taking contested fade aways but not a word to him. He is not doing the kid any favors letting him throw up trash after 1 pass. Most of why this team lost last night was because of poor shot selection by the supposed scorers.
Loved the no commercials aspect of the broadcast, but to be honest, it didn't help Holtmann's cause at all. IMO, it showed his lack of in-game coaching and motivation tactics, and this manifested itself onto the player's performance on the court. There didn't seem to be focus during the timeouts on what they should be doing, whereas this was a constant in Minny's huddles.
I really like Chris Holtmann the man, but he's just not getting it done as the head coach...time to cut bait and move on, Gene, unless you're happy with mediocrity.
Same thing every year. January comes and Holtmans teams always do this. Other coaches make adjustments on the Buckeyes and Holtman does not know how to reply. The kids feel it they know he is saying the same thing over and over . They are not being led and the only chance they have as a team is when 2 of the guys are on fire and do not miss. And by the way Mr. Thorton is being ruined,he is one helluva fearless player and they have done or said something to him that is on the way to changing that. We now know why other players have left over the years. Good players you look at and say, this kid can be developed into something great.
and by the way Mr. Thorton is being ruined,he is one helluva fearless player and they have done or said something to him that is on the way to changing that.
I wouldn't be surprised if he's in the portal at year's end.
After about 60 seconds I quit watching. I don’t want to hear or see the coaches the entire game. Hate to say it but whoever thought this was a good idea should be sent back to the mail room. As usual the Bucks lost to a lesser talented team.
NFL tried to do a field view for a game a couple years back and it totally sucked. I’ll never understand why they to fix what isn’t broken.
I enjoyed it. I didn’t see the same thing as everyone else about Holtman being exposed as a phony. If anything he seemed like he wasn’t comfortable with the camera constantly around him. I know I probably wouldn’t be either. I do admit that I like holtman and know little when it comes to basketball and bball coaching.
It was excellent- I was more into that game than any other recent one I've watched. If not for this all-access approach, I would have changed the channel to get away from the commercials and OSU's subpar play. I can put up with the coaches' yelling to see first hand the immense difference in coaching styles. Holtzman really seems to be a generalist yelling, 'Go!', 'Rebound', 'Block out', all basic commands like we'd tell each other in our HS Y-Ball days. His players looked to be longing for real direction and Coach H had zero answers. Johnson on the other hand earned his pay and was coaching like his hair was on fire during every bounce of the ball- I was extremely impressed by him and his team's desire which is something OSU lacked. This entire telecast was an indictment of Holtzman's tenure and I would not have come to that conclusion without viewing it in this way.
Holtzman really seems to be a generalist yelling....This entire telecast was an indictment of Holtzman's tenure and I would not have come to that conclusion without viewing it in this way.
I found it amazing that coaches have to constantly yell at 19-21 year olds who have played basketball all of their lives to rebound. I don't think I could be a coach because I would get tired to telling them to do basic things over and over and over.
Either the coaching sucks, or the kids are really dumb.
Yeah...I caught the last minute of the game. IMO, I think OSU needs to consider a coaching change for the Men's basketball program sooner than later. Watch the post-game presser. Dude looks and sounds a bit broken. He must be a really good recruiter, but let's be honest...with the facilities at OSU how can they possibly not land a few top guys every year, particularly those looking to be one and done?
He seems like a genuinely good guy. Hope he lands on his feet.
5 minutes of coach scream was all i want for the season. I do n't even want to hear Coach K . At least Icould see the game the way I want without a split screen,. To think one could shrink your screen about 70% smaller on Fubo . no thank you. and btw i am not one of the "100% of posters " who watch TV on their cell phones. Ha!
Funny! Johnson tells Minny playas they don't have to score with an 8 point lead and about 90 secss time left and had we given effort more than 5 minutes in the last half we would have won the game anyway if they hadnt taken so many poor shots 6 feet from the basket. we couldnt hit a layup 20 % of the time. I would try llikelely at point and let THORNTON AT sg FOR A GAME OR .
I think the Purdue game wore them down physically and mentally.. Besides we are playing as many as four freshmen at times and most of them will be or should be mentally and physically tougher next yr. I agree Coach can do better in crunch time but I dont blame him that most of the team isnt ready for Big Ten Hoops yet. Minny deserved to win we deserved to lose. but it was not a well coached game on either side for my money.
One thing I think coach should not do is pull a player out that just swished a shot and got pulled out right afterward.
We need more assists.. more passing and less dribbling.&.more practice against the press I expect Sueing to round into his old self soon and Zed to heal more.
Why is it that we end up with some hotshot 3 pt shooters who can hardly get open?.

I enjoyed it, wouldn’t want it for every game but it’s a unique way to view a game of relative unimportance
I loved it since it exposed Holtmann for the poor coach that he is. He provides very little substance and near zero direction. He is nothing more than a glorified highly over-paid cheerleader masquerading as a basketball coach.
Pitino is at Iona. His way is legal now. That would be a good get imo
Fuck Pitino Would take Sean Miller any day over Pitino

I was at the game. I constantly watch the bench and the looks on players faces would lead one to believe that they are tuned out.
Jeebus, glad I forgot about the game. Hell, I've forgot about the program till Chad isn't coaching anymore.
Not a fan, too distracting.

Well if your honest both coaches didn't talk much at the same time as Holtmann offered nothing but a bunch of hand clapping and some bitter beer faces

Hated it. Muted the TV and opened The Varsity app and listened to Paul Keels.

All I know is it made it fully transparent how terrible of an in-game coach Holtmann is.
I listened to Paul after about 3 minutes of game time.

Sucked balls!! Ditto on what everyone was saying about exposing holtmann as a coach. We made this shitty team look good
That's how winners play. We convince the other guy he's making all the right moves.
Sometimes it doesn’t help to see how the (underperforming/underachieving) sausage is made.
Players have lost confidence in Holtmann, as it's evident he has lost confidence in himself as a Big Ten head coach.
Goforthree
I turned it way down and just watched
Holtmann’s stock is through the roof. Maybe we’ve been wrong about Zed all along:
He’s not raising the roof. He’s throwing Holtmann through it.
Hmm
Better than watching 300 asine comercials.
How about showing regular camera angles with no announcers? I would pay extra for that.
“I have researched and found that some of my relatives spelled it 'Greene' and others 'Green' and the latter is correct."
modern tv's now have remotes and most remotes have a mute button,it is a gift from the heavens
Mute is a blessing indeed, but it would be nice to have ambient venue sound to enhance the live viewing experience.

I came away impressed with Ben Johnson and even less impressed as ever with Holtmann. Chris was a cheerleader, Ben Was a coach.
Also Holtmann’s body language all game was akin to a 3 year old throwing a temper tantrum. It was a bad look in all facets.
Its pretty clear why our team plays the way it plays.
"We didn't play with enough force tonight"
Holtmann reminds me of my son's baseball coach, all he could do is yell cliches like, "Waste his, get yours" and "Bow your back"
Sani
LOL...got that same feeling watching him--felt like a bunch of repeated cliches.
