Man, all this talk about our NIL not being up to snuff is really starting to come home to roost. I think that we've been able to get top flight high school recruits who care more about culture, fit, and coaching development to commit, but NIL is killing us in the transfer portal, since most of these guys are looking to play 1-2 years, make some cash, win some hardware, and get to the league. Also makes Lincoln Riley's move to USC make all the more sense now since the plethora of NIL opportunities in LA essentially means that he gets to run the program like a pro franchise. Less time spent on recruiting and development.

The transfer portal is the equivalent of NFL free agency.  The kids leaving a program shop around for $$$ as much as playing time and development.

In days past, many families stepped up for OSU.  Money should not be a problem. John Galbraith, John Wolfe, Michael Goldberg, Jameson Crane, Sam Covelli, Jerome Schottenstein, Michael Bloch, Tom and Mike Cronin, Mike O’Shaughnessy, John McCoy, Kevin Prior, Jim Harmon, Bill McCorkle, Dick Nourse, and many others contribute. Even without Les Wexner.

If he did he would want to shower with the team.

HS
tcm1968's picture

Still think the biggest mistake they are doing right now, is just the slush fund thing. Unless you contribute $100K or more, you just give them money to do with it what they want..

Other schools aren't doing that...

Scary sign of things to come if we don’t figure out NIL. Don’t want to pay high school players up front then fine(maybe). But we have to drop an upfront bag proven for transfer players.

This. Looking forward to the NCAA cracking down on a school and getting told, “Go fuck yourselves.” Depending on the team/sport/school, TV money alone makes them too big to fail. You think Fox wants a B1G contract with an Ohio State football team on probation?

Also, recently, we've lost out on numerous offensive line high school recruiting battles.  We've had no choice but to resort to taking many projects, hoping we'll strike gold on one or two three-stars, like Dawand Jones did.  Consequently, we're very thin at tackle and the offensive line as a whole.  Combine that with missing on the transfer portal and we have a going concern.

HS
quietskies's picture

...and we're doing very poorly at NIL, and that's a problem in the portal and recruiting in general.  Sure, we finished third based on average player ranking.  However, the WR position accounted for most of our top-ranked players.  We're slowly (or quickly!_ falling behind at DE, OL, CB and DT.  We need to solve this NIL topic right now or we'll be looking up at some number of teams in the back half of this decade.

HS
Keze's picture

I take it you mean on talent when saying we are thin on the Oline. We have 19 on the team and 18 if Jones declares.

The Painful loss to GA will continue to be a HUGE opportunity gone for this team. It is quite apparent from this transfer portal cycle and the close to 2023 class how far behind bucks are with NIL. We will continue to fall behind with our AD/Administration in place. We have tougher upcoming schedules and Big ten will only get harder and harder. This truly the year and we had it…and it’s gone.

While I think we still aren't doing NIL the right way.

Not sure that's what this is..

No one can be shocked a kid from Northern California, who didn't consider any schools East of Wyoming during recruiting, chose to stay on the West Coast.

HS
JohnnyGhost's picture

I dont think people realize how much of an uphill battle we face with recruiting, even before factoring in NIL.

Our state/region just doesn't have the talent needed to put together top recruiting classes. We're fighting with USC, Texas, Bama, Georgia, Florida, etc to pull guys away from their own states. Of course we'll lose those battles more often than not.

HS

Is a transfer offensive tackle from Washington State really getting a small truckload of money wheeled to their doorstep or is all of this talk about NIL pure conjecture?

I'm not implying it isn't true by asking the question. I just think it can potentially be rather reductive to default to "because NIL" every time OSU loses a recruiting battle.

HS
quietskies's picture

My concerns are twofold:

1.  We are not recruiting well at the offensive line, portal or high school

2.  We aren't doing well enough at NIL regardless of position.

I'm not that concerned about one particular player or another in the portal.  Some guys go places with no NIL money.  They just want to be close to home, play more, etc.  Some do just follow the money.  I am concerned about the developing trend of missing on offensive line prospects from high school AND/OR the portal.

HS
tcm1968's picture

We just brought in 3 of the top 34 offensive lineman in the country with the 2023 class, and based on their positions all inside the top 12..

Frye did a GREAT job.. Padilla, Montgomery and Siereveld will be multi year starters..

Go Bucks!!!

HS
6beersandacloudofhops's picture

This, plus wasn’t everyone on here exited about ‘22 commits like Hinzman and Tshabola? Just bc we missed out on some recruits/transfers those guys are all garbage now? Yes it sucks to miss out on guys, and the current depth/experience level is less than ideal, but you can’t get every single target. That’s just not feasible. Especially in this situation where he clearly was never going to come east to begin with.

I for one am excited to see when Hinzman is ready to start, if there’s one thing Wisconsin knows (besides cheese) its road grader linemen.

HS
HandsOfSweed's picture

I'd add alcoholism and sausage to Wisconsin's knowledge list.

6beercloud--ironically Wisky is also famous for BEER.  One wonders how someone with that very product in their screen name would fail to mention that ;) But I like you am looking forward to Hinzman , Tshabola and don't forget OT Fitzpatrick 4star from Colorado as well.

For one simple thing, USC represents a greater opportunity to play on a larger stage than WSU. Even without any NIL promise, if he wants. to play at the next level, being a Trojan will pay more dividends.

HS
Mr NeverAgain's picture

Lol... The NIL and transfer portal stuff will have some guidelines and over-sight in the next year or two. The powers that be are letting this stuff implode to say, we told you so.... Ohio St will survive and be better equiped after guidelines or over-sight is formulated. This whole thing is not sustainable.

This is what Gene is betting on. We'll see if it comes to fruition. He's a much smarter AD than people on here are giving him credit for, so we'll see what happens (although he did bet wrong in 2012, but that's more because Mark Emmett came with an agenda to show there's a new sheriff in town).

HS
Dasniksder's picture

The guy entered the portal so he could transfer to USC. Our only real shot at him would’ve been to throw a huge bag of cash and a guaranteed starting position, and our staff doesn’t do either of those things.
Hopefully someone sees the opportunity at OSU and jumps in the portal with the sole purpose of transferring to OSU. We’ll see, but something tells me OSU will be fine.

HS

I mean he is from California, and has experience in the conference aside from any possible NIL deal.

HS

If only we had have a Brian Hartline type coach for the OL. A man can only dream.

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

It’s a little too early to panic. NIL starts as a philosophy and Ohio State’s has been “come and be developed and the NIL money will follow,” while other schools are saying “you’re a good player already so why not get paid now?” It’s almost as if Ohio State is acting like a small-market baseball team (Reds, Royals) banking on its minor league system versus the big market teams that can compete for high priced free agents. One and done transfers like Kingston who have started multiple years don't give a rat’s ass about development. They want the exposure that comes from playing on championship capable teams that generate a lot of publicity while also making more money than their current school can afford to pay to keep them.

If Ohio State changes its philosophy, it can get back into the game and level the NIL playing field pretty quickly.

HS

You said it. The meltdowns over every single recruiting/transfer “miss,” as if the guys we do have are hot garbage, is exhausting. Feel like it has to be hard work to act like the sky is falling over every single thing.

HS
Dougsixxx's picture

Buckeyes needs a nil collective set up.  Hard for the wexners and shottensteins to keep donating millions without any idea how it’s being spent. Georgia, bama and all the teams that are recruiting at high levels will have some hit the portal next year. Can’t play them all.

HS
Buximus's picture

I agree with Cdub4- he's a west coast guy and the midwest can be a culture shock to someone from the west. Plus USC is becoming a power again, has a talented roster with the Heisman Trophy QB returning and a real shot at not only making the playoff but winning it. Was NIL the deciding factor... who knows? USC is a private school where the spoken language is money so up-front cash from crazy azz boosters could have been a factor. But to paraphrase an appropriate quote- "we're looking for volunteers, not mercenaries".

We are asking southern kids to leave their homes, near their family, and leave the strongest regional group of teams (who wins NC's) to come up north for less money.  What could possibly go wrong?

HS

In my humble opinion NIL should actually mean NAME, IMAGE and LIKENESS and not a future employment contract from university boosters. I don't know where oversight would come from, but that to me would be the proper definition.

Bummer, but expected.  USC was the leader all along.

Non-optimal for a new starting QB with 2 new OT and a thin line in general if we are talking about experienced players.  Still, Day gets paid big bucks and Frye gets paid lesser big bucks to overcome such situations.

HS

OL depth as of now for next year is scary scary thin. We needed multiple OL men in the transfer portal and it doesn’t seem like we’re going to find anyone of quality at this point. If

We will be fine at OT next year. I am not worried at all. Fryar is already better than Dawand Jones ever was.  Zen Michalski or whomever wins the other tackle job will also be more than fine.

I'll never understand why our first priority isn't to kids from the midwest.   You go after a kid from the west coast with no connection to Ohio State who didn't grow up watching Ohio State, where Ohio might as well be Siberia to him.  You're not getting a commitment.

I live in California and I literally have people ask me all the time "Where is Ohio?"   They know it's a state, just not where it's located.

Have a great time in Southern California, Jarrett. Especially enjoy watching your defense get torched in big games such that, no matter how well you play or how many points the offense puts up your opponent will put up at least one more point. And you'll never win the conference. And you'll never even smell the CFP. But, really, sincerely, enjoy the Cali sunshine, Jarrett. Eat fresh.

I agree that Kingston staying west is more bad luck than NIL. I'm happy with whoever replaces Dawand at right tackle because it would only take the "browns luck" to find someone who can false start at a higher level. Additionally a second to how many of you want to take years off of your life claiming to know the ins and outs of NIL. Keep your stress to yourselves and remember, complete sentences please!

That NIL is starting to become a problem. No, I don't think this guy is raking in the NIL dough, yet. But let's be real. He more than likely will make a lot more there in Southern California, rather than in Ohio. This sucks....

No panic here, but I still feel like we are going to be thin and inexperienced at OL for the at least the 2023 season without a significant infusion of talent and that doesn't look promising at the moment!

Just imagine if our backups that haven’t played yet didn’t come here and went to no name state instead and became starters right away. Then they entered the portal and came here. We’d love them all and feel great right? But for real, most of them could’ve done just that except they were good enough to get offered by OSU.

Lincoln Riley has become the master of the portal. If you don't mind paying high taxes and the CA govt involved in most aspects of a personal life, then LA  (USC) is the place for you. Wine, women & song (+ a nice chunk of $NIL) LA has it all. If your $NIL deal is g.t. $1M you'll pay a 13.3% state income tax. If $NIL becomes a deciding factor for some of these kids I'm skipping CA and going to schools in TX, TN & FL where there is no state income tax. Caleb Williams $NIL deal is estimated at $3.2M (assume annual). 13.3% of whatever Williams' net taxable income is going to be a huge number.
