It’s real simple, we can either start winning some of these damn wars with the defensive guys or keep on what we’ve been doing since Day got here. Everyone knows our WR rankings push our overall ranking up. We do NOT have the play making athletes on D like we did with Urban. I for one am freakin’ OVER IT
Folks say Knowles needs "his guys" for his system to work. He might want to start winning some of these recruiting battles or his time here will be short.
Knowles does not seem to be an ace recruiter. Based upon what I read, the only 2023 recruit that he played a role in recruiting is a linebacker from Cleveland Glenville.
It appears that Hartline and Day are the only good recruiters on the OSU staff.
I would toss Johnson into that mix of Day and Hardline and maybe Frye will surface. Yeah but some of these other guys got to start help getting some recruiting wins.
Wilson was a fine recruiter and did some of Studs work. So far we can't complain about Frye. The other new bloods are wait and see but last year performances look hit and miss on the field and won't bode well unless the play picks up.
The defensive backfield and lb misses since Hafley was a one and done have hurt WAY more than the defensive front. The dbs are in a bad shape as far as the number of healthy/viable players to contribute next year. And those experienced starters better step up the play, especially the fundamentals. Not to mention we have a coverted Rb playing lb. (Yes, he's been good. But let's face it, this is OSU. Start heavily recruiting defensive players, pretty please.)
Hunt will (or better fucking) play and if not, then this comment above needs a lot more attention, rather than hate from fans here at 11W. It's painfully obvious OSU is slowly, but surely, turning into a Big 12 team, like USC is now. Coincidentally with their great DC who was once OSU's, and ole Alex Grinch was bad and still is....
Hopefully we can start waking up to the fact that OSU's D has cost them a NC since Hafley couldn't stop Fabio (or big bird) from running for tds. Perhaps a spy, but oh well...

The Athletic recently interviewed a group of top recruits and asked them to discuss the factors in selecting a school. Not one ranked NIL as the top factor and only two placed NIL in the top 3. Relationships, the ability of the school to get them to be NFL, academics, scheme, and playing time were all cited as primary factors. Most, if not all, rejected schools that offered the highest NIL.
Except they did cite it as a factor, just not the main reason. OSU has the 2nd and a 4th ranked recruiting class since NIL was implemented. The article and survey doesn’t fit the narrative so many fans believe; recruiting rankings also belie that narrative.
Again, NIL is a factor but not the main factor. This is from a sample of top recruits granted anonymity by The Athletic. A common refrain from interviewees is that they’ll make more money in the NFL than in NIL endorsements. They value relationships and want to play at schools that give them the best opportunity to showcase their talents and be drafted.
The states of Alabama, Florida, and Georgia have HS NIL restrictions similar to those in place in Ohio. California and Oregon don’t restrict HS NIL. Oregon has recruited well for years and USC is benefitting from the Lincoln Riley hire as much, if not more, than anything else. Colorado, which can offer NIL to HS athletes, isn’t on top 10 lists for 4* and 5* players because they are offering hefty oncentive packages; kids want to play for Deion Sanders. Even with NIL they had the 47th rated class this year; Illinois was 46th and Northwestern was 48th.
High school NIL restrictions aren’t the problem. The major difference is Georgia offering a couple of million dollars to Wilson, Alabama throwing big money at Keeley and Downs. Schools like USC and Oregon dropping bags for west coast recruits. Texas A&M and Texas along with Florida, Florida State, and Miami offering up front NIL money.
Birm said it best. If there was no NIL…Ohio State would have had Keeley, Downs, Wilson, and a few others in the 2023 recruiting class instead of them going to other schools. Their best relationships were with Ohio State.
Of course, not all recruits are offered life changing NIL money like the recruits mentioned above so, for those recruits, NIL might not be as big of a draw as the things that you mentioned.
OSU has the 2nd and a 4th ranked recruiting class since NIL was implemented.
This isn't accurate. NIL went into effect on July 1st 2021, 5 months after the 2021 was signed. Only the 2022 & 2023 classes have been recruited/signed during the NIL era.
Eliano has Texas roots while Walton had more stops in the southeast. I don’t know if these are their designated regions but may be the reason for your query.
Someone put a collection plate out. Heaven knows I’ve pissed away a lot of money on this team be it travel, swag, tix etc. I’d love to be a member of something that I can contribute to. Would make the team/season that much more fun.
Defensive recruiting is taking a hit because Coombs botched the defense HARD. And now Knowles doesnt recruit. Recruits want that relationship with the DC as well as position coach. Giving 50% of what they need is not a formula for success.

Put yourself in these 5 stars shoes if your a LB, CB, or safety what have you seen this past year to make you want to commit to Knowles's defense? I'm just curious!
If I'm convinced it's talent on the field and I'm a competitive guy (which I am so I'm biased already), and it's not Knowles system, I'd sign on the dotted line!

OSU needs these guys now!!!
Kobe Black is legit. Waco, TX so he's a 1.5hr drive from me. I like this offer a lot and will need to dig a bit more.

NIL will be a deciding factor going forward. Either Ohio State decides to get on board to keep up or they might get left at the station.
Perhaps. Then pick them up in the transfer portal a year later.
There is more than one way to build a team in this day and age.
We still need the money to get them from transfer portal. We just lost out on our 4th transfer O-lineman bc everyone else has more money.

I doubt that most recruits would admit the NIL was their big draw. They already have theirs. Why dilute it?
Except they did cite it as a factor, just not the main reason. OSU has the 2nd and a 4th ranked recruiting class since NIL was implemented. The article and survey doesn’t fit the narrative so many fans believe; recruiting rankings also belie that narrative.
NIL is still relatively new and we lost quite a few 2023 recruits because schools offered big NIL packages.
Auburn, Alabama, Miami, Georgia, USC, Oregon…all pulled recruits from us because they dropped a big bag of money.

It sure looks like OSU if doing fine in every category EXCEPT the NIL area. Gotta keep current for these kids.
Interesting the offer came from Eliano and not Walton.
You never lose to those pricks. Ever. Ever.
Eliano has Texas roots while Walton had more stops in the southeast. I don’t know if these are their designated regions but may be the reason for your query.
Plus Eliano recently developed a pretty good CB also named Kobe;)
"Put ya' weight on it"
at least we are trying to recruit top defense players but damn time to land some.
Is it Knowles, staff or NIL. We need to figure out WTF the problem is.

And if they do commit it is an even bet they will de-commit before signing day because of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.
What took so long for OSU to offer Kobe?
Defensive recruiting is taking a hit because Coombs botched the defense HARD. And now Knowles doesnt recruit. Recruits want that relationship with the DC as well as position coach. Giving 50% of what they need is not a formula for success.

Someone besides Hartline has to start closing on these dudes. My gosh.
