C.J. Stroud Strengthens Standing Among Ohio State’s All-Time Great Quarterbacks with Stellar Performance in Peach Bowl

Ohio State has won three national championships in my lifetime.  I, of course, loved what Rex, Craig, and Cardale did to help make that happen.

But, the fact is, none of their performances rivaled what CJ did Saturday night.

CJ delivered big-time against Georgia; football is not Wimbledon so, unfortunately, CJ’s greatness alone was not enough to put the Buckeyes over the top. Wishing CJ nothing but the best on Sundays and hope he gets at least one Super Bowl ring.

100% agree. He’s going to have a great career and will go down as one of the best QBs to ever play at OSU. He deserved that W more than anyone.

HS

Absolutely. CJ played as good of a game as I have ever seen a college QB play. Nothing will take away from his performance, not even a razor thin "L".

C.J. was tremendous on Saturday. Appeared to be one of those games of the ages, as far his performance went. But he came up one play short. In my quest to understand the "playcalling" on that last fateful series of 3 plays before the missed FG, I leave you with this screen shot. 3rd and 11, we rushed to the line and caught UGA off guard. CJ is staring right at EE wide open on the left. He will easily pickup a first down and get out of bounds, getting us absolutely crucial yards for the FG, and still time to get even closer, or center it.  As good as he played, he is going to have live with this decision here and the last play of his Buckeye career, he didn't pull the trigger on a throw that I expect our 7th string walk on to be able to make.

0-2 with no hardware can never be considered greatness as an OSU QB.  Did he throw a nice ball sure, will he be remembered for anything he did at OSU, NO!

This first paragraph is from another Eleven Warriors thread and I agree with it:

Stroud played every snap of the game at quarterback in five of Ohio State’s final six games of the season including the Peach Bowl. In what is likely to be his final game as a Buckeye, Stroud had one of the finest performances of his Ohio State career against Georgia, completing 23 of 34 passing attempts for 348 yards and four touchdowns while also running for 70 yards (not including sacks), doing just about everything he could to give the Buckeyes a chance to win even though they came up just short.

I decided to look up GA QB (Stetson Bennett) statistics to see how GA could possibly have won the game with, as the paragraph above says about CJ, "one of the finest performances of his Ohio State career..."  I was quite surprised with Bennett's statistics when compared to CJ's.     Bennett completed 23 of 34 passing attempts (Sounds familiar, right) for 398 yards and three touchdowns.  So Bennett actually had more passing yards than CJ and the identical passing attempts/completion stats.  My hat is off to Bennett because he was certainly overshadowed by CJ.    Stats were taken from ESPN site below.

The secondary needs to be better for sure. The entire D no way....I've had it with Karen's on this blog. Ryan Day's play calling...awesome....CJ Stroud's performance...unbelievable. This team should have won...Kirby even said it. You want to point fingers point at officiating...clearly targeting no doubt and I'll have to waive the TO on a fake punt that worked by the way since Kirby had enough balls to trust some two bit analyst with one of his "worth their weight in Gold" TOs sitting at an OSU 39 yard line and down 2 scores. Either one of these two things that happened not go GAs way we win...and don't say a damn word about Ruggles...50 yards...really. To the point at this level teams will get in a shootout and have to put up 40 plus points even if you run the ball and rely on a defense to win in the regular season...you have to win or match the shootout and you have to get a stop at some point...nobody can trip in coverage...go find some CBs and SAFs....our recruiting here hurt as Stroud was leaning on a pickup team throughout the season all the way to the 4th quarter in the peach bowl...imagine JSN...MHJ..and EE all together. God Bless you CJ Stroud go make some money! Day...keep doing what you do we CLEARLY have one of the top 3 teams in the country. That said the call back TD on Ichigan...bad OFFICIATING AGAIN! I hate them but damn let the teams play ball...

There were things on Georgia's side as well that could have made a difference. Their kicker missed 2 that were in his normal range and he is also a very reliable kicker. Dropped passes, missed assignments, etc. As fans we only tend to think what our team missed doing would have changed the outcome and ignore the opportunities missed by the other team.

It was a great game by two great teams. Given the imperfections of humans shit happens. A win would have been far more satisfying but still very proud of how they all played and coached and especially of Stroud

Stroud certainly left no doubt as to what he is capable of when he plays his best. What an amazing performance and great way to go out. It’s unfortunate that the D couldn’t hold up on their end.

It will be interesting to see how early in the draft Stroud goes.

People can complain about Day all they want, but there is no doubt that he has significantly elevated the quality of QB play during his time at OSU.

STL Amen amen amen . I am so tired of the Stroud is soft , Day shouldn’t call plays crap. There are still guys bitching on 11W about play calling, but I think Stroud finally shut the others up who would rather have Caleb Williams. Day brings and develops QB talent and he continues to do that - Hartline can recruit WRs  , but let’s not forget that these guys are coming assuming they are playing with an NFL caliber QB - Stroud will be the third 1st rounder in four years. Only Alabama can boast that

After a major loss, everyone goes looking for a demon—an easy target, an easy “fix”—because the real reasons are more complicated and take more work to fix. So you get “Fire Day” and “Stroud stinks,” when in reality, the issue with this team in 5 big (and only) losses going back to Jan. 2021 has been an average DL and a weak secondary and questionable defensive calls in game. The only guy on the DL who even sniffs the level of a Bosa or Young is JT. Both corners are converted offensive players. As is one of the nickel safeties (Martinez). So are 2 of the LBs. Defensive recruiting was subpar for a couple of years, and Coombs was not a good DC. Knowles has overplayed his hand at bad times, but also did improve the D this year. CJ was the QB through this era: where each big loss was pretty much 100% on the D. Which is a shame. The kid is gifted. But it is what it is. TTUN losses aside (again, mostly on the D), he got this team within a 50 yard FG of a likely Natty. I’m sorry to see him go.

Two times CJ headed to left sideline to get first down but went out just short.  Think he could and should have made a first down but went out too early because he did not want to get hit.  His reluctance to  take a slight hit cost two first downs.  In a past game he did use his shoulder to get a first down on a similar play.  His lack of toughness was evident on those plays.

On the final drive where he got 27 yards, he jumped one tackle and lowered his shoulder into 2 other defenders who ultimately got him to the ground.  If you saw that play and still think he is soft, I don't know what to tell you.  He put his team on his shoulders (his team, not yours) and did everything he could to win the game.  He didn't call cover-0 man in the 4th quarter allowing UGA to score quickly rather than driving the field, and he didn't call long developing plays when UGA was sending 9 3 plays in a row from the 30 yard line, which in combination cost us the game.  What he did do was give us a chance to win.

CJ was great Saturday night, no debate there, but his performance made me wonder where that player has been for two years. Personally, I don't blame CJ nearly as much as I blame Ryan Day, whose job is to get the kind of performance we saw CJ deliver Saturday night out of his quarterback every Saturday, or certainly most Saturdays. It seems that CJ has been restrained by Day for reasons unknown. Stroud has had the ability all along to be at least be somewhat of a threat to run -- not Justin Fields or even close, but a threat -- and keep defenses honest to certain degree. Had the CJ Stroud of Saturday night -- a baller who was given the green light to do whatever was needed to keep the chains moving -- been here for the past two years, Ohio State would probably have at least one more trophy in The Woody... and that is on Ryan Day.

I had the same thought. Both losses this season can be put on the D but the OSU offense only scored 3 against TTUN in the second half. If they played like they did against Georgia, the Bucks would’ve either won or been a lot closer!

I could be wrong but my sense is that Day was afraid of CJ getting hurt because he knew McCord and/or Brown were nowhere near his level. I don’t think it was Stroud’s choice.

I also get the sense that when Day has time to prepare, he can get an offense to perform at a very high level-Clemson 2020, Georgia 2022. I don’t understand why there is a gap between those offensive performances and the ones we saw against TTUN the past two seasons. They talk about how they are constantly preparing and always incorporate a play against TTUN into practice etc… but the on-field performance doesn’t seem to reflect that. I know it’s easier to prep when you have more time and aren’t also getting ready for and playing other games, but I still don’t understand why the Bucks can’t go into the TTUN game firing on all cylinders for 4 quarters. Outside of the defense which is evidently still a work in progress, this is where Day needs to improve the most-having the offense ready to dominate for an entire game against the biggest opponents.

CJ did everything he possibly could have to win that game, in my opinion.  The man was locked in all game long.  It is a shame that his amazing display was in a loss, but I really hope those that have been overly critical of his performances take this effort into consideration when looking back at his time at Ohio State.  The Buckeyes lose that game by a much greater margin without CJ Stroud.

Man, everyone is eulogizing Stroud as if he's already gone but I think there's a small chance he's coming back. Look, what happened on Saturday night is a NORMAL NFL game scenario. MOST games now come down to who has the ball last like last night's Steelers-Ravens game. There is so much parity now in the NFL it's ridiculous. NFL QB's are EXPECTED to drive that ball down the field and score. EXPECTED. Did we get that out of Stroud on Saturday? No. And every NFL team saw the same thing and that may slip him to later rounds which would be a disaster. I don't like being too hard on our guys, especially after a tough loss where we snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, but reality is what it is. Stroud WAS magnificent. There is a simple solution here. Stroud who is currently making and estimated $2.4 million per year right now can come back next season. He can beat TTUN. He can WIN the Heisman. AND he can WIN the national championship.  What's the rush to go to the NFL to play on some crappy team where you're getting sacked seven times a game and losing 13 games like Justin Fields is experiencing right now for $4.7 million? Heck, Stroud could easily make twice that next season if he returns to OSU. Legitimately. So, what's the hurry? Come back and win it all and truly become a "Buckeye Great." Some things money cannot buy, and that would be one of them. I betcha if the OSU NIL folks did a "fundraiser" to get $5-$10 million for Stroud, it would happen in an afternoon. Come back, young man! Win it all!!

For him, the best move is to move on-he'd going 1st round. I like what you are saying but here are some things to consider:

1. Next year's team should be loaded, but that doesn't guarantee results. They could very easily go 10-2/9-3 aka Bama this year.

2. Injury. He's gotten through with no major injuries. One bad hit, one cheap shot aka what was done to Harrison, and there ya go. Yes, I know it's part of the game and always a risk. But at this point, it's something he needs to consider this is a business decision.

3. Development. How much more can he gain from Day's offense? Will Day let him call plays, make checks, etc?

4. NIL. The NIL collectives are not making fundraising targets currently. So a fundraiser to get 5-10 million for CJ would probably fall flat on its face

Ultimately it's his decision, and I would be happy to see him stay, but the best decision for him is likely to move on.

Agreed on all points. The future IS unknown--who of us even knows if we'll be alive tomorrow--but we do "eliminate" one of the major factors for him leaving--money--by his current earnings, and the potential of more. I'm weird like this, but money has never "motivated" me, personally. I've always sought "other" challenges in life. We all need money, of course, but I think that most people that "have money" wish they had other things that money can't buy. Their health, family, time, friends, etc. "Things in life money can't buy." And with OSU, and The Brotherhood, Buckeye players have something worth WAY MORE than money, and something that even those Buckeyes in the NFL still cherish as we see week after week where former Buckeyes swap jerseys after the games and whatnot. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. What price can you put on that? Now I'll go back to my fantasy land...lol

I'll admit I haven't been feeling positive about CJ the past few weeks, but he completed an amazing performance NYE in the Peach Bowl.  He helped mask a lot of the consistent issues this team has (poor run game, even poorer defense) and almost put the team (and defensive coaches) on his back for the win.  He ran when needed, escaped pressure, and made all the throws.

If I had to critique the other night, it would be that he drops back in the pocket too quickly instead of stepping up, but that could be due to the UGA Dline in his face and overall amazing pocket awareness most plays.  Also, we needed 10-15 more yards.  Where was this CJ and/or play calling all season?  When CJ's on his game, with competent coaching, he's the best QB in the country.

Due to all levels of the defense (DLine, LBs, CBs, S, and coaching), plus being a one dimensional offensive team most of his career, CJ doesn't have any signature wins...but I'm not blaming him and would love to have him back (I know he's going to NFL and should be the first QB drafted).

CJ is a class act and a true leader.  An all-time Buckeye legend and I am going to miss him. I believe our coaches kept him throttled down on running and concerned so much with ball security that it lost him the chance to stick it to Desmond in NY.  I hope he has set a standard for our younger QBs to follow.

I have enjoyed watching CJ Stroud grow and excel over the last two years. We have never had a quarterback quite like him. (and I have been watching since the 70s) I get tired of people questioning his toughness. Day obviously did not want him to run or ask him to run. His ability to extend plays in the pocket while keeping his eyes downfield is something coaches wish they could teach all quarterbacks. He had great weapons downfield and was still figuring out the times when he should take what was qiven on the ground. He is young and still learning, by the way.
He dealt with a lot of change during his time. Sure he had Olave and Wilson the whole season, but then had to do it with a new cast in the rose bowl after the D put him way behind the 8 ball. In the first michigan game, he had no running game and was under pressure the whole game and was the only thing that kept us in the game into the 2nd half. Dont even need to mention the poor D that day.
This year he had to adjust immediately when his top receiver was taken away. He also had to develop chemistry with a new tight end. He had to deal with an injury plagued and inconsistent run game that could not be counted upon. He put us out in front in the Michigan game only to see the D continually give up big plays and the momentum and emotional swings that came with all those.
He kept battling against Georgia even as more and more of his weapons were taken away. Top running backs, top 2 receiving tight ends, Down his top 2 wide receivers against what is probably the best defense in the country. At that point he realized his legs were the best option as his downfield targets were depleted.
His teammates obviously love him and think he is plenty tough enough. That is what matters.
He would have had a legitimate shot at two national championships if we had had a typical Ohio State defense. We had a couple historically bad defensive performances that kept him and his teammates from their goals.
Keep being you young man. Keep growing and enjoy the ride with your teammates at the next level. I will always be rooting for you. Thank you for everything you have given to Buckeye Nation!

I have been consistent in my recognition of Stroud as the most accurate passer in OSU history. This was on full display in the Peach Bowl, where a number of his passes were drops (including 2 by Harrison before the play he got targeted  defended against). Stroud just doesn't throw the ball into bad positions very often. Most of his interceptions all season long were tipped by either his receivers or the defensive line. The O-line gave him a lot of time to throw, and his legs were equally effective at keeping plays and drives alive. I've been looking for post-game scouting analysis beyond his QB rating. I am certain he opened a lot of eyes with his exceptional play against a very good team.

I agree that I wish Day had allowed full use of all of the weapons on this year's team. For whatever reason, and especially against Michigan, we tried using unproven players in order to be unexpected. Georgia knew full well what we were going to do and they had no ability to stop it. Let that be the biggest lesson we learn from the 2022 season.

I will miss Stroud as I have no expectation he returns for another season. I also have a lot of faith in Next Man Up and the talent we have waiting in the wings. I look forward to watching him on Sundays and wish him the success he deserves.

Heartbreaking loss for sure. However They balled out as best they can with the hand dealt. As fans we are spoiled by an embarrassment of riches with this team and I’m ok with that.

I am looking forward to the offseason and seeing the development from here on out. I think Tommy comes back which would solidify the LB’s which were the heartbeat of the defense to me. Having a full stable of running backs healthy will also be good for us too.

me I do think we are going to get an unlikely surprise on signing day in Feb. it’s been a damn good year for this team. I appreciate reading all the comments rather good or bad this year.

I’ve criticized Stroud at different points over the last two years. I’ve always believed he is a fantastic person with insane arm talent. I’m not going to dive into it, but while his arm talent was unquestioned, I have had some questions and concerns about the other parts of his game. I think there were a lot of people who went too far with their opinions on Stroud. Some went WAY too far. I don’t agree with those people in the slightest, but I do think concerns/questions were warranted. As a result, I wasn’t sure what version of CJ we would see on Saturday night. But after the game, he left no doubt.

That was simply one of the best Qb performances in Ohio State history. He was nearly flawless throwing the ball. He created and extended plays in and outside the pocket. He made plays happened in the run game. Even when there was nothing, CJ made something. When our best play makers got injured, CJ was unbothered. He showed fantastic leadership right up till the very end. It’s a shame we didn’t win this one, but it was easy to see that CJ left it all on the field. I’m damn proud he’s our QB, and wish him the absolute best in the NFL. Proud Buckeye

CJ is easily top 3 QB to ever put on a Buckeye uniform and carries himself with class. Kid played with heart and deserved the win. Defense has work to do but Jim Knowles will get this right, he has no choice because Ryan Day won’t put up with giving up 500 yards a game.
I hope Ryan Day is here a long time and doesn’t go to NFL.

Funny coming here and seeing all those people that called CJ "soft" and said he wasn't a "leader" talking like he walks on water now. He was always good but everyone wanted to nitpick everything he did. That said, while I am hoping he may decide to stick around another year I wouldn't be surprised if he declares for the draft. Now that Young has declared, that might move CJ down just enough that he wouldn't end up going to the sorriest team and might have a better chance in the NFL. Everyone was down on Fields but he is basically carrying the Bears on his back right now. And would really hate to see CJ end up like Burrow, getting hurt his first year because he was drafted by a team with a porous O-line. We all saw THAT one coming.

Whatever he decides to do, I wish him the best. He has a great arm and is extremely smart and if he does go in the draft, I thinnk a lot of Buckeyes are going to be missing him next season.

Not only did CJ play great in this last game (and so many others!), it is worth recalling a couple of other aspects of this young man.  It is worth rewatching what he did to check on the young woman after he inadvertently ran her over on the sideline.  A great demonstration of who he is as a person; he is more than just a QB.  He is a fine human being.  Also, when he arrived on campus, he had $7 in his pocket.  He did not have enough money to buy a Coke in a souvenir cup at the ‘Shoe.  But, he came here and gave his all.  Our team lost a game despite outstanding effort and despite a heroic performance by CJ Stroud.  These young men invest so much into this…and that is something for all of us to be thankful for!

Stroud definitely changed some minds in terms of how good he'll be in the pro ranks, and if not I'm gonna want to know why. I got so tired of hearing people talk about how he's not known for his mobility, yet he proved time and again he was able to buy time with his legs while keeping his eyes downfield. More often than not he didn't run because he didn't really need to. Had nothing to do with a lack of mobility, or a lack of ability.

Whoever lands him (please let it be a decent team with a good O-Line), they should be looking to the sky and thanking God that they're getting a QB like this one. Screw whatever the doubters say/will say.

HS
12egulator's picture

CJ has been amongst the most criticized QB's in Buckeye history. In part, because let's face it, our program has never been stronger. But also, because of what I believe to be "other factors". Going back to his FIRST start against Minnesota, on the ROAD, in rain, his accuracy was questioned despite tossing 4 TD's. Those complaints only grew stronger following the loss to Oregon, because despite throwing for 484 yards and 3 scores, he was picked off in the game's closing moments, and of course, "other factors" (we also eventually learned that he hurt his shoulder in this game, which led to his subpar performance against Tulsa and week off against Akron).

I was there in the stadium during CJ's historic game for the ages in our Rose Bowl victory. I knew then and there that I was witnessing the best passing QB in Buckeye history. And although we didn't witness the Death Star type offense that we expected to see through stretches of this season, the TYPE of criticism that CJ endured was completely unwarranted.

I'm so happy that CJ showed all of us what he is able to do against the most elite of competition, and will now be able to continue to show us his amazing abilities on Sunday.

Go CJ!

But in looking at the last two plays of the game, with EE wide-open, I am not sure how to evaluate him.

see the thread here—it’s gob-smacking. These are throws  I would expect a good intramural QB to make.

TBH, he needs another year with more responsibilities in the reads. He’s going to take the cash, but he’s not ready.

Best of luck in the draft.

My favorite part of CJ Stroud is we know who is. He is not a fake like a lot of people in front of the camera. He is a real person and he wore his heart on his sleeve for this university, he will be missed. How about one more go at Michigan, The Big Ten Championship, The National Championship and the Heisman? Those were his goals…still achievable?

Because I couldn't go for three

Simply phenomenal.  I am still eating my words and crow over my assessment of him.

I say that with a smile, because while the game wasn't won, I got to see CJ Stroud be great, and carry the team on his shoulders.

Thanks CJ.  I was wrong about you.  ON EVERYTHING.

CJ was absolutely fantastic vs. Georgia. He did everything in his power to will the Buckeyes to victory, but just came up 1 point short.

He certainly upped his draft stock big time as he showed a complete set of skills against a great Georgia team.

CJ was great but wonder why he never ran like that against Michigan. If he did, we win those games. I was impressed.
