TreySermonGrin's picture

Springboard is a perfect analogy! Did we accomplish any of our goals with him as a starter, no. Am I more comfortable with where the program is than I was two years ago? Marginally, yes.

Number 11, huh?

Number 11, huh?

HS
stantmann's picture

Two years ago they were coming off consecutive playoff appearances, a NC game (that should have been delayed because of covid infections), 8 consecutive wins in the UM game, and 4 straight B1G championships. I would say the program is heading in the opposite direction, although marginally. In fairness to CJ, it is more the defense's fault, not the offense.

HS
B07841's picture

Amazing how people diwnvote the truth.

Is the program in a better spot than two years ago? Absolutely not. But not because of Stroud. The decline of the defense and a constant rash of injuries is the biggest factors.

HS
Concord's picture

Defense was obviously the problem compared to the offense.

But when you only score 3 points in the 2nd half at home in good weather against your hated rival which had mocked you all year...vomitous

HS
Jay_sizzle's picture

……. And how much can a QB do …… when the offensive playcalling gets conservative & plays not to lose? Think with your brain quickly

HS
stpetebuck's picture

Defense needs more improvement. Period.

HS
Steel City Buckeye's picture

The inability to run in short yardage situations was just as big of an issue as the Defense.

HS
XBrax1's picture

LMAO great comment. I'd like everyone to tell me exactly how many points CJ was responsible for in the second half of the Michigan game, and then explain exactly how a team wins that way even if the defense is better. It's a shame he didn't remember how legs operate till the last game of his career, then bam, best game ever. What a crazy idea! Only every single fan was saying it the whole damn time. wierd

The defense lost that game, but CJ could had a chance to win and didn't. CJ threw 2 int's during crunch time.

HS
TreySermonGrin's picture

I really don't know why I hit gray on this comment. It's a fact we went 0/6 on our "three goals" over his two years. That's not necessarily CJs fault, and I never said it was. Did people take such umbrage with the fact I said we are marginally in a better place than after Alabama?

Number 11, huh?

HS

He doesn't play defense. What exactly is your problem with him?

I aim to misbehave.

HS
XBrax1's picture

Read my post right above it. Scoring ZERO POINTS in the second half doesn't beat good teams like Michigan even if the defense is better. Offense only scored 27 last year too. Be honest with yourself, how many times in college football have you seen a big time game be won by a team that only scores 27 points in the last decade?  Not many, offense sucked in those games buddy, sorry.  He's the leader of the offense. All he'll ever be to me is a QB that had great stats and never achieved the goals of beating Michigan or winning a title. Maybe if he figured out how legs work before the last game of his career it would be a different story.

Defense wins championships. Whoever wins the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball usually wins the game. CJ isn’t the only reason for the loses.

Has any QB gone 0-2 verse TTUN in the last 25 years? Dare I say worst OSU QB this Century?  We are better off with McCord.

HS
stantmann's picture

In the last 25 years:

CJ was 0-2, Braxton was 1-1, Krenzel was 2-1, Steve Belasari was also 0-2, and Stanley Jackson 0-1. The winners are, Justin 2-0, Haskins 1-0, JT 4-0, Pryor 2-0, Boeckman 1-0, Troy 3-0, Germaine 1-0 (I think Germaine might have started the 1996 game (a loss), not 100% sure, but it is beyond your 25 year threshold.

MrMertle's picture

Most talented passer I’ve seen at OSU. Put up incredible stats and played really well in 2 bowl games. However, he missed on every opportunity to be a Buckeye legend (0 titles, 0-2 vs Michigan, 0 Heismans). Whether the losses were on him or not, Buckeye legends beat Michigan and win championships.

It’s funny though, because I fully expect him to have the best NFL career of any OSU QB.

HS
AaronAlvin's picture

He will 100% be the best pro-tOSU QB of all time. But for the reasons stated above, his Buckeye career will be (rightfully so) labeled as stats but with no substance and he'll never rank as the best Buckeye QB because of it (tho certainly one of the most talented), but if he's okay with that, then so am I.

HS
SalemBuckeye's picture

It will be interesting. Stroud was the most accurate that I've seen and threw into pea sized windows at times. He also moved around the pocket well and was accurate on the run. Listening to the talking heads they confused his unwillingness to scramble with lack of mobility. Yes, he would not take the open yardage when offered but he was very good at moving around the Los and finding receivers downfield.

HS
YoungBossBuckeye's picture

I said basically the same thing and a handful of homers got their feelings hurt and downvoted me LOL. People make me laugh.

CJ leaving for the NFL was the obvious decision. You don't turn down that kind of money. The reason why we didn't win any championships with him as our QB was because our defense was a disaster. Now that 3 of our OL were leaving too, he would've been insane to come back.

BOATS and HOES.

HS
Snake64's picture

Get used to it. If you say anything that isn't a homer take you will have people DV you into oblivion. I was DV'd into a timeout this past weekend because I mentioned USC was illegally contact Marvin about a transfer and somehow people jumped to the conclusion that i was intimating Marvin was leaving for USC even though i stated several times in those posts that I don't think Marvin was leaving but that USC openly tampering with players not in the portal is a huge issue. Something the NCAA is just flat out ignoring too. But that's how the herd mentality works here. I got DV'd for saying something I actually didn't say it's fascinating.

Also CJ didn't win more not because of a bad defense he didn't win more because he didn't elevate against equally talented teams. The defense didn't cause him to not score in the 4th quarter of the UGA game. Defense didn't cause him to only generate 3 points in the second half vs TTUN. Defense didn't cause him to put up only 27 at home vs Oregon. He's a great arm talent but he doesn't elevate the team as a QB. Love him but there's issues. Also the 3 OL being replaced is interesting for the QB competition next season.

You always want to put the best team on the field but I suppose if I'm looking for some kind of silver lining, at least we won't have to face the added pressure of being penciled in as the favorite. It's bad enough trying to play perfect from week to week in everyone else's championship game. We historically seem to play better as the perceived underdog than the heavy favorite. Still would have rather taken our chances though...

No, because the idiots who constantly say dumb and negative things I do not consider part of the Buckeye fanbase.  I consider them losers who pretend they're Buckeye fans for some reason.

The fact that you think those assholes represent all of us is a problem in and of itself. Most of us who actually have common sense can't stand them even being here at all.

Great QB.  Great Buckeye.  Great citizen.  Thanks for the memories.  Please come back and graduate, if you haven’t already.

There was a thin strand of hope in my mind that said he'd come back for one final year. However, it was pretty ordained that he'd opt out for the NFL! That is why the elite athletes come to schools like Ohio State! Congrats CJ and go rip it up young man!!!  You are a class act every second of the day both on and off the field! I will be a CJ fan no matter where he goes!

The best thing about Pastafarianism? It is not only acceptable, but advisable, to be heavily sauced

Time to make the big money. Go get them young man.

He's already making big money.  He said around Christmas time that the best gift he's ever given was buying his mother a house.  That whole NIL issue is another discussion for another day though.

Just his signing bonus will dwarf NIL money.

For all the TDs and countless perfect passes CJ Stroud made in his time in Columbus, he will never be looked upon with the love or held in the same esteem as a Cardale Jones or Craig Krenzel in my eyes.

Well obviously quarterbacks that led us to National Championships are held in higher esteem than pretty much everyone.  Those guys benefited from playing with awesome defenses and unfortunately Stroud did not get that opportunity.  He certainly had his share of special moments though.

HS
JackTatumsAfro's picture

When it's all said and done, Stroud has a chance to have the most successful NFL career of any Ohio State QB in our history. Journeyman Mike Tomczak's passing numbers, accumulated in a 14 year career spent mostly as a backup wouldn't be too difficult a bar to surpass statistically, other than the longevity part. It would be difficult to see Stroud surviving even close to 14 seasons, but worst case scenario he'd only need to have 6-7 productive years as a Starter to top Tomczak's 16,000 yds and 88 TD career totals. Not sure I can say I feel as strongly about Justin Fields' chances of getting there as I do Stroud.

Somehow I forgot about Joe Burrow. I guess it's because he won a Heisman and National Title in the SEC for LSU. I try to forget things like that the best I can. He's the odds on favorite right now and way ahead of schedule to easily have the best NFL career of any of our former QBs.

Sad when a dude can throw for 8100 yards and 85 TDs in two years and still not be enough for some fans

Whose college career was better Matthew Stafford of Stetson Bennett? Craig Krenzel or Joe Germaine?

HS
Dstacify's picture

Joe Germaine got an extremely raw deal at Ohio State. The difference between him being a 3rd Rd pick and a potential 1st Rounder was the fact that Cooper forced him into that damn QB platoon with mediocre Stanley Jackson for two years. Germaine was a fantastic QB in '98 (a year we should've been competing for a Natty if the meltdown against Sparty doesn't happen) and arguably much more talented than Krenzel ever was (though obviously Krenzel carved out a legendary career for himself here).

Bennett has better stats than Stafford so half your argument fails right away. What if Stroud puts up worse numbers than he had, think we would be in a better place than we are?

HS
XBrax1's picture

I'll trade half of those stats for wins against Michigan, and don't give me the "but muh defense" argument.  Scoring 27 points or less in big games is almost never going to get the job done.  Offense sucked balls in those games and he was the leader of those offenses.

Mods on this site are so fragile. They'll censor comments that don't even break any rules and ban you for calling them out on it.

I believe he will not be the first quarterback drafted, but he has all the tools to be the best of the bunch this year.  He'll be a winner wherever he ends up.

I just wish he would have gotten a W over TTUN.

Two things:  I don't think it's a done deal that McCord will automatically be the starter.  Devin Brown throws a really good and accurate ball.

Second:  I'm thinking CJ Stroud will have a horseshoe on the side of his helmet come September and will be throwing to Paris Campbell.  He's gonna do great!!!  JMHO.

HS

Enter the McCord era.  Brown could take advantage of any deficiencies.  It appears McCord is a lock to reunite with his old high school teammate marvelous Marv in what could be Coach Day’s capstone year as Ohio State’s HC.  Phil Collins- I can Feel it coming in the air tonight begins to play.

There’s nothing left in Columbus for CJ. He had his shots and it didn’t work out. Time to go get paid. Thanks for a memorable Rose Bowl and a tremendous effort against UGA.

Enjoyed watching CJ. He put this years team on his back. He does have a B10 Championship ring, a Rose Bowl win, two Heisman appearances, a part of two CFP teams and part of a team that beat Mich worse than any other OSU team…made them not even want to play The Game.  that’s a good career

Great career and good luck CJ!

Its a shame Big 12 Ryan Day couldnt give him a chance at a Natty by finding a decent enough defense.

Here's to recognition of a tremendous career and hoping that transfers into the NFL! I, for one, will not post anything negative or 'less than' about TOSU on this post because I don't get down like that. Here's also to hoping you don't get down like that. Killin' it Buckeye 'fans'!
