Don't hate this at all.  In the transfer portal era, you need to make this kind of move to shore-up depth in the QB room.  Odds are, we'll have at least one less QB in the room shortly after a new starter wins the job.

HS

Raises the level of the scout team looks with an experienced qb.

Yep, perfect fit to the specific need. And him having the opportunity to learn for a year under Day, Hartline, and Dennis will help him in his pursuit of coaching. Win, win.

I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan!

HS
SalemBuckeye's picture

He's actually had great qb coaching already. Jonathan Smith was the Beaver qb who led Oregon State to a number 2 ranking and beat Notre Dame 41-9 in their bowl game. Smith was a qb coach under Dennis Erickson and is now the Beaver head coach. Guessing he is transferring because he wasn't the starter and Oregon State was the school that DJ Uiagalelei chose to transfer to from Clemson. If he was going to coach, guessing Ohio State adds a more complex passing scheme and has better connections than Oregon State.

likely, it'll be his 4th year.  He's a 5 star QB, somebody will take him.

Let's not pretend day already knows who the starting QB is.

it will be his 3rd in the program. He was a true sophomore this past year.

What makes you think Day knows who is starting next year? there is zero reason to think that.

Going by last year it would be McCord he came in and played the most. O line do they have that figured out too interesting.

Denny

HS
Dstacify's picture

You really think Day has already chosen Brown as the starter? That's a crock. Right now McCord is absolutely the frontrunner for the job. He has a year of experience in the program that Devin doesn't have, he already has a pre-existing chemistry with Marv from their time together in HS, and between the two of them he has the better arm (though Devin is more mobile for sure). McCord is not going to transfer unless he loses the starting job and right now the job is very much his to lose (Devin will have to make a huge impression in spring ball to start gaining ground on him in the competition). This kid is not going to be much of a factor in the QB competition (and if he is that's a problem because that would likely mean that McCord and Brown are struggling and the coaches don't have much faith in them).

It will be his third year. This transfer does not affect McCord's status in the program whatsoever, and it certainly does not make a departure "likely." Glad we've got this guy, but he's in the Gunnar Hoak/Jagger LaRoe category--a decent QB who can provide depth, play on scout team, etc. McCord and Brown know that.

Does he have a home town or a state that he is from ?

Weirdly enough, no he doesn't. He was born at 18 years old on campus and just started playing QB for Nebraska immediately before transferring to Oregon State.

Just kiddin', Google says his HS was in Calabasas. Not sure about where he was born.

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

Gebbia was in the same 2017 class at Calabasas as Keyshawn Johnson, Jr. and Darnay Holmes. They each had over 1,000 yards receiving their senior season. WR Johnny Wilson, who tore it up at FSU his year, had over 800 yards receiving as a freshman. To say Gebbia had some weapons would be an understatement.

Dstacify's picture

Right now we only have two scholarship QBs on the team until Kienholz arrives (and he won't be here until the summer). Day has always preferred to have four.

11 Strong.

HS
BrutusB's picture

We’ve only had four once (2020: Fields, Stroud, Miller and Hoak)

Though IIRC the coaches were high on JP Andrade (as far as walk ons are concerned) so maybe they thought of him as a fourth.

HS
Dstacify's picture

Not true. We had four in 2021 as well (Stroud, McCord, Miller, and Ewers).

11 Strong.

HS
gobucks1966's picture

I think they have a handle on it we seem to worry every year about the 85 and never have an issue. When push comes to shove if need be someone will be told your welcome to stay but you will not play one down.

Denny

HS
Dstacify's picture

We've lost 5 scholarship guys to the portal (Teradja Mitchell, Jantzen Dunn, Jaylen Johnson, JK Johnson, and Javontae Jean-Baptiste), we have a number of guys declaring for the draft and/or graduating/moving on (Stroud, Cage, Vincent, ZH, Hickman, McCalister, JSN, Rossi, Paris, Dawand, Wypler, Babb), and a number of other guys whose futures here are very up in the air (Josh Proctor, Tyler Friday, Jaden McKenzie, Palaie Gaoteote, potentially Gee Scott, Jayden Ballard, and Evan Pryor). Not to mention we have 23 recruits coming in with the 2023 class and if McCord loses the QB competition he's likely headed for the portal as well. I don't think being over the scholarship limit is going to be much of an issue.

11 Strong.

HS
Lighteyes's picture

Especially since if you look at the scholarship grid, there's a number of guys from the 2020 and 2021 classes who haven't yet sniffed the field and are potentially at risk of getting jumped by younger guys. Not going to name specific names of course because that's not really fair, but like...you can look at the scholarship grid and see some names where you go "hmmm, haven't heard much about him" or which seem to still be blocked by guys ahead/behind.

HS
Beantown_Buckeye's picture

Plenty of scholarships will be available after taking another relatively small recruiting class. This won't stop OSU from taking transfers at other positions. Day, and most coaches, prefer having 4 scholarship QBs on roster if possible, although that's become more difficult in the portal era. This also protects against a scenario in which Brown wins the starting job and McCord transfers. Having only 2 scholarship QBs would be a bad place to be.

HS
OSUtopia's picture

There were will be more transfers out after Spring practice. The question is, how many?

OSUtopia

HS
va_buck's picture

I agree that the numbers will be worked out but the handy-dandy scholarship grid shows that 'plenty' may depend on its definition.  Currently at 88 (with the other-OSU QB).  Granted the list suggests that 85 shouldn't be a problem but I'm not sure that there are 'plenty' available.  It's been funny to hear posters wanting to grab all these players from the portal and not understand the 85 limit.  And to be sure, the scholarship grid is not always accurate.  The X-man had a scholarship for nearly a year before it was announced and the grid updated.

VA_Buck

HS
Beantown_Buckeye's picture

There are 3 veterans still on that list who are almost certainly not coming back and I'd expect 5-7 more transfers by the end of the Spring transfer period. In the end the Buckeyes will be able to bring in another OT and CB if they are so inclined.

I agree that there isn't room to bring in 10 transfers or something like that (nor do they need to) but I could see 2-4 more guys being brought in by the start of next season, and I'd be surprised if the staff was looking for more than that.

HS
va_buck's picture

I agree on your 3 and the ability to bring in a DB or OT but I hope we don't have 5 to 7 more transfers as that could really impact the depth.  We can't afford losing any DBs.  I could see a WR, OL, and maybe an LB though.

VA_Buck

They already missed on the best corners and tackles in the portal this go around. Hopefully there will be some good ones hitting the portal in the spring. Needed another quarterback for next year, I'm fine with it, he won't play but having a veteran in the room is a good thing. Who knows maybe if we are up by a billion on someone he gets in for a few snaps. It'll most likely be McCord and then brown as the backup.

Fills a need and it’s a smart move for him as well. His value as a veteran backup helps us while the elite qb coaching he’ll receive will help him as a player and in the future as a coach. Win win!

HS
Tresselball4life's picture

Just looked him up on 247 sports.  Top 200 recruit in 2017.  Ranked 9 pro style qb.  We took Martell that year.  Maybe Day saw something in this kid but took Martell due to the hype and wants to try him out.

HS
Beantown_Buckeye's picture

Day didn't take Martell. Day got the OC job a month to signing day in 2017 and Martell had been committed for 6 months and enrolled around the same time Day started. Tate was a guy Urban wanted.

HS

Back in the day, Rivals had this kid as a 4* and the number 6 at QB.  Smart move.  Looks like mentorship and catastrophe insurance.

HS

Really like this move. Not to be lost is that he was coached by Jonathan Smith, who has been a miracle worker as head coach at Oregon State, which is such a tough place to win at. Smith is Oregon State's career passing leader, and he's known as a QB guru and a great teacher. Gebbia will be a terrific addition to the QB room.

HS
AZbucks77's picture

I thought the name sounded kind of familiar, and being that he's been around for 7 years that is probably why; haha.   Anyway, I assume at this point he is most likely a summer enrollee?  Or is he able to get into class in time to be able to participate in spring ball?
