As much as this was a throw away season it really sucks to finish last in the division.

Hope is limited

This was a bit unexpected.  I thought for sure Priefer would be let go.

Keeping either of them is a huge mistake.

I guess I give Howard a pass because I have no idea if the secondary issues were a result of Woods or him.

Couple that with this from Schwartz's press conference and it makes me wonder what was really going on within the defensive staff.

Howard was the one that said they had no idea what to do against the Bengals when Higgins and Boyd went out, he should have been fired based on that alone.  Maybe he was just the messenger though, I guess we'll see.

DT would be nice, but from what I read about Schwartz, Browns will really need to look at LB.  One thing I read intimated that JOK would not fit in his system, so there may be some trades on the horizon

Schwartz also said he can win with any type of LB although I agree JOK's bodytype probably isn't ideally what he's looking for.  My meaningless 2 cents is the NFL is in nickel and dime so much as it is there will be a role for JOK even if he gets subbed out on bigger packages.

I think the linebacker room this year was really coming on, but injuries just killed them. The putrid interior d-line play certainly didn;t help out the linebackers much either.

I have to think they re-sign Takitaki, as he really started to come on before his injury.  Walker is also a FA, not sure how that will play out.  JOk and Phillips can play fast and have showed flashes but need to pull it all together.

The combo of a horrible DC and interior d-line has made it really hard to judge the ability of the linebackers as a whole in my opinion.

The funny thing about the Browns' linebackers is that despite all the injuries this season, you almost never noticed it reflected in how the team played -- except during those weeks right after Walker was hurt, and they had Jacob Phillips in there being totally lost. Those games against Atlanta and the Chargers, narrow losses where they allowed over 200 yards on the ground both times because the run defense was so bad, ended up really costing them down the line.

Glad Callihan resigned with the Browns - I know there were teams seeking him out to be their OC.

Who cares the browns are a hopeless franchise with a crook for an owner and a blight on the cleveland sports community

Matti, you make some good points, but some of us are loyal to a fault.

The biggest issue with Schwartz's scheme is he needs a good to elite defensive front in order to make it work (and he had that in Philly during their SB year with guys like Fletcher Cox, Derek Barnett, and Brandon Graham up front). Outside of Garrett right now the Browns don't have that (especially with Clowney almost certainly being gone and their DTs not being good). Their strength in the defense is the secondary (specifically at corner).

IMO unfortunately they gave up way to much for Watson and that along with the money they gave him will haunt the Browns for years...

HS
cledaybuck's picture

That really depends IMO.  If Watson is the franchise QB they think he is, no one will care what they gave up.  If he isn't, what they gave up will certainly hurt bad.

Wasn't he the franchise QB in Houston, before he beat the shit out of 25 women ? Great pick up!!

Not a Watson fan and his behavior was bad enough, but the allegations were never that "he beat the shit out of 25 women."

Browns really have no need for a bunch of rookies. For better or for worse they’re in win now mode. They need established veterans who know how to play professional football. The browns have plenty of young players and don’t have a year or two to figure it out.

A little bit of objectivity can go a long way

YEP they have tried this strategy for 20 yrs. Looks like they are stuck in reverse!! HAHA

HS

disagree. They need good rookies on cheap rookie deals. You can’t pay every single veteran

HS
undercoverbuck's picture

You can get solid veterans on good deals, people who have won, you can trust and contribute to meaningful football in January. Young players need people to learn from. I’m not saying trade away every pick and forgo the draft every year but we don’t need more young players who blow assignments and don’t study the playbook. There’s a ton of young talent that doesn’t know what they’re doing. We need more professional football players.

This is going to sound like making excuses, but the team needs to make some noise about officiating. The Browns led the league in being called for holding penalties, and had fewer holding penalties called against them than any other team even though Myles Garrett was basically a dance partner for opposing offensive tackles all season. I just don't think that happens by chance, when you factor in how angry the league allegedly was about the Browns giving Watson a record amount of guaranteed money.

Its an offensive league. I'd be ok if they try to outscore teams and just have an average defense. They have an elite qb, rb, and offensive line. I really want them to have that true #1 wr. Amari is really a #2.

HS

Why would you post this?  Let's say the Mistake By The Lake is was and has always been a Dumpster Fire!!  You really expect them to put a Winning Product on the Field? They have tried firing everyone Drafting like a contender every year. While other teams build teams from the Lines Out they continue to draft and sign Free Agents like they are a couple pieces from winning it all!

As much as I troll i have a buddy in the org so I am really rooting for stefanski to keep his job.

Biggest problem for the Browns is they were bent over backwards in how they structured Watsons contract. Total money is perfectly fine, but by letting him get paid almost nothing in year 1 they have destroyed their future. The cap hit is all backloaded so instead of it being a 5/$230 it’s really a 4/$220. Browns are paying Watson $15M more per year towards the cap than the Bills are paying Josh Allen.

On top of this they went VERY expensive at RG, LG, and RB. When you throw in the lack of draft picks it all makes roster building a nightmare.

2023 may be fine because of the salary cap roll over but after that it could be some dark days
