As a Lions fan fuck yea we rolling with Goff. This team needs more defensive pieces.

I think the math is simple for the Lions. Are you trying to win a superbowl? If so you draft a QB. Are you trying to guarantee you make the playoffs a few times? Then draft a corner.

Only reason you are drafting this high is because of a trade with the Rams. You wont have a top 10 pick for 5+ years and you know Goff isnt going to take you past the divisional round.

HS
Tiffin2b's picture

right because Goff has never played in a Super Bowl lmfao. I'll take my chances. Good thing is the Lions have a GM I fully trust finally. If he thinks QB is the pick then so be it. If not, then so be it.

HS
undercoverbuck's picture

Goff is a QB that everything around him needs to be right for him to win a super bowl. That will always handicap the Lions SB chances. The lions are doing a lot of things right but eventually they’ll need to upgrade the QB position to be a real threat to win the SB.  Goff also allows for them to take a Stoud or Levi’s and have them sit a year and acclimate to the NFL. Think Alex Smith and Patrick Mahomes (not saying either is Mahomes but KC showed just a few years ago that even though they have a decent QB you need a dude under center to take the next step).

A little bit of objectivity can go a long way

Say "30 year old Jared Goff will lead us to a superbowl win" to a non Lions fan. We both know what reaction you will get lol.

Im not hating on the Lions at all, I'm rooting for them to be a good team in the NFC. As a Stroud fan I would prefer he ends up there compared to the other options. As a Bengals fan I can tell you how fun the 2010s were with a really good roster and average QB. Made the playoffs every year, never came close to competing for a superbowl, never came close to being able to draft an elite QB to change things. Dont get caught in QB purgatory.

HS
Beantown_Buckeye's picture

If I were the Lions I'd take Stroud if he's there. Goff had a solid year but we all know he could easily have an eh season next year. That's just what he's been in the NFL - he has his moments but hasn't been a consistent top-12 QB season to season.

Stroud is also kinda perfect for the Lions this year. He can learn behind Goff and not be rushed, plus the Lions can still get helpful roster players at #18 and with their two 2nd rounders. To get a potential franchise QB without giving up significant draft capital, and also having other draft capital, is rare.

There's a difference between playing in a super bowl, and winning a super bowl. Jimmy G and Goff can get you to a super bowl, but they can't win one because they aren't good enough. That's why the 49ers sold their souls to get Trey Lance and the Lions should do the same. Both Jimmy and Jared are solid starters, but they're clearly not good enough to win a championship. Lions should draft a QB this year if they want a chance to win it all. The Lions are better off striking out swinging for the fences than striking out just trying to get on base. We all know what Goff is and he's not good enough

Trey Lance will never win a Super Bowl with the 9ers as the starting quarterback.  He will be a Titan by the end of April.

HS
PeneiSewell's picture

That's not the point. Busts happen and Lance is a bust. The 49ers had the right idea, they just got stupid and passed on Justin Fields. There's no Justin Fields in this draft, but that doesn't mean the Lions can't find a franchise QB in this draft if they really want one. The 49ers swung for the fences and struck out. The Lions could potentially strike out just trying to get on base. That's the difference. Lions would be really dumb to not do everything they can to upgrade from Goff long term; even if it means taking a guy like Anthony Richardson and sitting him for a year or two

I don't understand these mocks that talk up Stroud's skills and say he can't create being the negative, while simultaneously ranking Levis higher. Basically saying that Stroud has no skill deficiency (size, arm strength, accuracy, etc.), but still somehow think the tools of Levis are better despite the utter lack of production? It makes zero logical sense. Levis has been in school for 5 years at the Power 5 level and is still seen as a developmental project, which is a huge red flag to me. Josh Allen could at least point to being from a small-school as a way to think there is more to develop and grow. And he was younger. He's also an extreme outlier, who still makes a lot of negative plays. Personally, I think the debate between Stroud and Young is going to be closer than either is to any other prospect.

I'd rather the Bengals take JSN over Washington if both are there. Perfect replacement for Boyd.

HS
Spartan13's picture

DJ clearly mentions playmaking and creativity as flaws for Stroud. Now is the Peach Bowl proof of what Stroud will be every game or was it an outlier?  He is also clear that Levis does show everything at some point, just not all the time. He shows, strength, accuracy, athleticism, creativty, playmaking, and size. I think its insane too though its going to be hilarious watching a team blow it on Levis.

Also its not a ranking of QBs DJ just thinks the Colts/Chris Ballard would prefer Levis:

The tape for Levis is a roller-coaster ride. The strong-armed passer showed flashes of brilliance and the ability to avoid pressure and create; he also showed a penchant for turning the ball over (23 picks over his last two seasons). Colts GM Chris Ballard has always valued traits and upside. This pick just feels like a good gamble for Indianapolis.

JSN is interesting for the Bengals because you would be sitting your first rounder once again but is perfect to step in for Boyd. If Malik Wright is to be believed then the plan is to resign Higgins and Chase while letting Boyd/Mixon move on. If thats the case I like Washington as somebody to help boost the run game as a blocker and replace the slot role in the passing game. Ultimately its up to who they want to resign though

HS
Hanawi_'s picture

I just don't see the upside of Levis versus guys like Allen or Lance in past drafts given he played at the highest levels of CFB. Maybe I overestimate some of these guys doing the drafting. Also, think the play-making knock on Stroud was overstated. He made plenty of good throws on the run throughout the season starting with the ND game.

As for the Bengals, that's the way I would go with letting Boyd and Mixon walk. Washington would be a fine pick, I just think JSN is a better player and you can get good value at TE into the 3rd round. Though Washington is pretty unique. I also wouldn't mind Bijan as the pick.

HS
Booger's picture

We all watched him for 2 seasons. It was clearly the outlier…. They aren’t going to throw away every other game just because he ran a few times in the last game.

That said, he should go before Levis 100/100 times

HS

Derek Carr is getting released or traded by 2/15 which makes passing on a QB even more curious. Only way it makes sense is if they think they can sign Brady or trade for another veteran QB.

A little bit of objectivity can go a long way

No true Raider fan would want Brady #1 what are you getting 2 years out of him #2 he fumbled #3 he fumbled and #4 f#ck Brady. And as a lifelong Raider and Buckeye fan I could never cheer for ttun's "goat". Give me C.J at 7 all day.

Oh great another OSU qb slotted to go to a horrible team with no offensive weapons.

Yep, and the idiots will still say "Hurrr Ohio State QBs always fail in the NFL, Hurrr"

Gee, I wonder why that is?

Colts owner would be wise to draft CJ because they're so close to Columbus. Instantly gain some support from Buckeye fans in the Midwest (and nationwide). I know some Buckeye fans that would drive to Indy to root for CJ in person.

I just don't get these dudes trying to make Will Levis happen. Maybe I'll be proven wrong. CJ has some room to grow but he's shown he can grow in those areas.

I have a feeling Day wants his QBs to run his offense and not freelance too much. Though, I think maybe Day learned a lesson there with the L he took against TTUN and watch Caleb Williams take the Heisman. Need to allow your QBs to be the alpha dog that makes plays.

However, IF CJ is the 3rd QB taken, I hope a team like the Saints or Seattle trade up to get him so he doesn't have to suffer in aimless Carolina.

You win with people.

And so forth...

9 Units Strong!

It just feels like Zach Wilson all over again but he has a better attitude. Think the Jets want a redo and drafted Fields or even Jones over him?

As an Eagles fan I don't see much chance they'd take a WR with one of their 1sts. Probably some combination of DL, DB, OL if they keep both 1sts. They have some legitimate needs at those positions, with some veterans aging and/or reaching free agency, plus they have to pay Hurts soon. Howie Roseman loves to build in the trenches and the Eagles have their top 3 WRs set for the next 2-3 years. JSN would be a nice luxury but the chances of that seem really low.

HS
kareemabduljacobb's picture

Panthers wouldn’t be the worst option for CJ.  They’ve got some good players and with a good draft and free agency, could be pretty good with him.  That division isn’t great.  Panthers finished 7-10 with 3 different starting QBs (Mayfield, PJ Walker and Darnold lol) and 3 of those Ls came by 2, 3 and 3 in OT.  A few plays away from being a playoff team.  Not really sure what they’re losing in FA tho.

I just don't understand why anyone thinks Will Levis is better than Stroud.

Upon us all, a little rain must fall

HS
Kujo247's picture

While I've seen a TE mentioned before for the Bengals, I really don't see that happening.  They're fine with who they have.  I believe their more immediate needs are, in no particular order, CB/RB/OL.

Nothing is too difficult for the person that doesn't have to do it.

HS
Spartan13's picture

I personally don’t think RB is draftable. Don’t disagree about wanting to see somebody else but Mixon is only 26 with 2 years left and a lot of his money being dead. Samaje is 27 and can probably give you a couple more years as RB2 on a cheap deal.

If Burrow is making $40M you have to be cheap at other places. RB will 100% be a place they go cheap

HS

If JSN is available when the bengals pick and they take Washington, I’ll be pissed.

HS
Silver Bullets 22's picture

Bengals would take Jsn before a project TE. Boyd and Higgins contracts are coming up. Burrow has shown he can produce similar results without the star trio on the field. So spending all the money on the WR's is no Bueno. A guy like Jsn comes in and probably upgrades Boyd's spot for a fraction of the cost. And I'll say ot now. I don't want the Bengals wasting any more 1st or 2nd round picks on offensive linemen. They are a crap shoot at best. Sign solid FA's and use picks 3-7 to play the roulette. Washington wouldn't play over Hurst or Sample anyways. Jsn would be an instant star with Chase and Higgins drawing 2 high safeties and man under.

Bullets will be back to save the season, and Stroud's dignity.

HS
Spartan13's picture

Bengals are about to reach a place where they can’t go sign free agents and the only choice is to resign your big names. It’s going to be VERY hard to build a team. This requires guys on rookie deal to be good starters.

As we enter this era of Burrow getting paid $40M per year I find it hard to want to spend a 1st rounder on a position of strength. Only way I would draft JSN is if you trade Higgins

HS
Booger's picture

75+ mill wrapped up in chase and Burrow soon. They’ll have to hit on a lot of picks, like you said

HS

I don't see any way the Bears don't trade out of the #1 spot. It's almost too easy for them. Somebody is going to make a run at a QB.

As a lukewarm Colts fan, I really hope they don't F this draft up, and either trade up, or stand pat and take Levis. Or worst case, trade up to #1 to take Levis, which I've seen mocked. And is absolutely insane.

HS
Spartan13's picture

I’m rooting hard for Fields so I hope it happens but idk who traded up. Seems like the Lions, Seahawks, and Raiders(Brady) plan to move forward with average veterans. Texans, Colts, and Panthers would draft one for sure. And there are 3 QBs if you count Levis.

Bears need Levis to struggle or another team to enter the draft market for a QB

HS

You actually want Levis? He’s the 2023 Zach Wilson.
