I don’t care what those pricks say. In 2020, they disrespected the rivalry with their lack of fortitude and integrity. Those chicken shits.

"Entitlement is not the reason OSU lost in 2021. But it was on the list. It's been removed." Agreed. The players are going into this game with a much different mindset. Let's hope it translates into an epic performance.

"Entitlement is not the reason OSU lost in 2021. But it was on the list."

So what else is on the list?  What is the real reason?

A great, engaging write-up from Ramzy, again.

But I'm left feeling like the cartoon by the famous Pat Oliphant,  A man falls at the top of the US Capitol steps and tumbles all the way down and down and down. When he lands at the base of the stairs an observer says, "I saw it all. What happened?"

So what happened?

HS
stlbuckeye15's picture

There are others who are probably more qualified than myself to answer this, but based on my understanding, these were some reasons:

1. Our defense was not sound and lost the LOS. We could not stop the run, especially in the second half. I personally think Coombs was mostly responsible for our defensive ineptitude but youth/inexperience probably had something to do with it too. Steele Chamber’s comments in a recent interview were very telling. He basically said we know exactly what to do and where to be and we are confident it will work. Last season when it was third and long, they just hoped for the best.

2. Inability of the offense to run the ball, especially in short yardage situations. This has been discussed A LOT and we have seen the same issues haunt us to some degree this season, but that killed us in the game last year. Again, we lost the LOS and failed to execute.

In response, the savage Day replaced Coombs with Knowles and brought in Frye. The D has certainly, up to this point, shown significant improvement, to put it mildly. I’m not gonna touch on the run game much (leave that to others), but I believe it has improved some and I’m hopeful we can get the crucial yards on the ground Saturday. I believe Hayden could be a key to success, but again, I’m no expert.

Penalties also hurt us last year. We had 10 penalties for 66 yards. No excuse for that and we better play clean.

Mahalo, StLBuck, how we lost the LOS on both sides of the ball is a mystery beyond my ken.

HS
MeatBichigan's picture

I'd also add that the next time Coombs makes a halftime adjustment will be the first. He's good at coaching guys to play the way he wants them to play. He's not good at doing anything different from what he wants to do.

TLDR: Michigan sucks.

HS
stlbuckeye15's picture

Yeah, the lack of adjustments was beyond frustrating. Coombs is a great position coach but it became clear that he’s not cut out to be a DC, at least not at OSU.

joethejester's picture

In addition to what was said above;

Flu for 12 or more guys was on the list.  Home field advantage was on the list.  Snow.  Telegraphing play calls. Not playing our best run stopping D-lineman (Tyleik Williams) for whatever reason.  I think it was LJ "not wanting to put a freshman in a moment that is too big for him."

Hopefully Ryan day truly understands what this game means now and is pushing that onto his players many are from out of state and don’t understand the rivalry. Win the game and your season was a success, lose the game and the season was an epic failure regardless of winning a meaningless bowl game afterwards. This game is a one game season and the winner takes all.

I mean, Ramzy hits the nail on the head yet again:

This Saturday is not revenge for what happened last year in Ann Arbor. It's not revenge for what didn't happen in 2020 in Columbus, either. Revenge has no real value in The Game; what happened once in the past is merely a blemish in blood feud that predates all of us.

But this rivalry is about the stories, the triumphs, the heroes and the villains.

As I have already posted elsewhere on our forums, it's time to get back to WRITING NEW HISTORY with a fury and full of truck sticking, and stiff arms, big playmaking from our playmakers, and more points than Harbaugh's anus can hold back to leave no doubt who the better team is this Saturday. Leave the history of this game for wall decor. LFG Buckeyes!

I would love to know what Alford told you Ramzy. Good on you for keeping your promise to him, though.

I believe that IF the Scrappy Skunk Weasel's are able to pull off a victory, it will NOT be because we are soft, entitled, lazy, or out-coached (which we saw last year).  It would be because they are the better team. I don't believe they are the better team.

We are angry and hungry. I hope to see THAT Buckeye team for 4 quarters Saturday.

I would love to hear about what Alford said to you Ramzy, especially on the Pope Fucc IV saga. It felt like OSU had too large of a leadership void and way too many green players last season. OSU lost Fields, Sermon, Togiai, Myers, Davis, Werner, Borland, Browning, among others, who were all guys the team respected, and replaced them with spoiled brats who pouted when they didn't play enough. I think Urban's last recruiting class was a disaster from a leadership standpoint and it came back to bite Day. Add in the worst defensive coordinator in quite possibly the history of the program and we all saw what happened. Day had to coach his balls off to get that mess to 11-2.

Canceling on Dec 8 meant football activities in Ann Arbor should have paused until Dec 15 at the earliest. So one of the following statements must be true, and the other must be false:

Harbaugh is a gloating winner and a poor loser, but most of all he's a coward. Jim Harbaugh and his melon-headed AD PUSSED OUT of The Game in 2020 for fear of being humiliated on national television. Blaming their cowardice on covid is disgusting, and that they brazenly practiced less than 24-hours after PUSSING OUT is the biggest bitch move in football history. Fuck *ichign. Fuck Harbaugh. Harbaugh backed out of playing UCLA in the non conference this year too. I'm sure it was mutual with Chip Kelly, another guy that has a history of backing out of games. Michigan and UCLA should have both been automatically dq'd from playoff consideration for those non conference schedules.

I was just getting ready to say I saw a 3rd string QB come in to the game in 2014 when JT got his ankle broken to seal the deal and eventually take them to a Natty,

I disagree to a point. It is about revenge, but it is a layered revenge. I want revenge for 1990, the last Game my dad ever got to watch, and that he went to his grave with a loss. I want revenge for the Cooper era, which made me take so much abuse at work the following Monday. I want revenge for '73, which while a tie, stopped Archie from getting four pairs of gold pants. I want revenge for every scar those bastards put on my heart, for every ounce of grief they have caused me. And yes, I want bone smashing revenge for a POS spoiled coach that cast aspersions upon my coach, and I want revenge for his promise in 1986. I want revenge for every title they cost us, and for every winter that was made bitter and cold with a loss.
Yes, I want cheap, shallow revenge.

The saddest thing I ever read in COVID times was, at the height of the death rate, that crematoriums in Los Angeles County had to request an environmental waiver so that they could operate 24 hours a day with an exemption for smog controls.

That's really sad when you think of the number of families - plus you couldn't even have a funeral.

But somehow Jim Harbaugh could use it as an excuse for his team not to play. That's not sad - it's pathetic.

The 2020 game should've been treated as a forfeit. End of story. What's more, is that last year's game should have been played in Ohio Stadium to make up for the cowardly forfeit. The more I learn about TTUN the more I loathe them from the rapist doctor they employed for forty years that sexually assaulted countless athletes, faculty, and children  to their callous an cowardly attempt to prevent us from going to the B1G championship due to lack of games (don't tell me that wasn't purposeful!). They are living in a land of illusion and think that they're "on par" with OSU. They are NOT. We are not their "big brother," we are THEIR DADDY.

I have walked this earth for 73 years. The last uncontested championship that ttun won was in the year before I was born,1948. Since that year the overall won/lost record is OSU 39, UM 30, with 4 ties. OSU has won 6 national championships, have had 6 Heisman winners and have won outright or shared 29 B1G championships. UM, not so much. And the real pisser in those stats is that their 2 Heisman winners in that time frame were both from Ohio. Side note, their only other winner was from Indiana. I would like to see OSU best ttun to take the overall won/lost record, but I am very content with what OSU has accomplished in my short stay.

And for the sake of those telling these stories long after we're all gone, we should archive what actually took place in 2020 before history paints over what a 30-point underdog did in 2020 to avoid participating in an event that transcends sports.

  • Michigan ignored guidance from medical experts, health department officials, university administration and broke conference pandemic protocol, putting its players, coaches and football staffers at risk.
  • A 30-point underdog used COVID as a cover to avoid being embarrassed again by its arch rival.

If Covid has taught me anything from having lived through some of the stupidest and idiotic decisions man could ever come up with.. It’s that both things could actually be true at the same time.
That game was basically canceled the week before when they failed their testing procedures during the week leading up to Maryland.  They just hadn’t practiced enough, nor passed enough negative-tests in order to continue to play the Buckeyes.
Big businesses don’t care about you or I.  They only care about their bottom line and how they can limit their risk of liability in such a case of something happening they could be held accountable for.  Make no mistake, football is a huge business.  But the rules and recommendations during Covid were so lax and changing nearly every day that large institutions were basically doing whatever they wanted once they realized that the majority of them were toothless.
I will go to my grave believing they completely dodged our Buckeyes that season, believing they were going to hand Indiana a trip to the B1G Championship Game and not have to take yet another L in the loss column.  Spineless bastards every last one of them…
