LFG Ramzy.

100% spot on, the talent this team has (if not hampered by poor coaching and game planning and play calling) could beat any team in the country on any field at any given point in time.

They can prove it this week!

Quick but important comment here. If UGA shows up with the Mizzou, Kent State, or Kentucky versions of itself, this game will be over by halftime.

That said if the team that throttled Oregon shows up.......uhh.....

HS
I_Run_The_Dave's picture

UGA doesn't have a former OSU coach on it's sideline to assist with that, nor are we playing with new coaches for the game.  That was a huge factor in that win.  If they played again right now, it would not be nearly the same outcome.

Your signature will be publicly displayed at the end of your comments.

No I get it. Mid season Oregon probably hangs around a long time in that one. That being said UGA played it’s most complete game, better than Tennessee.

Let’s me and you not split hairs and just both hope for Kentucky Georgia.

Agree that OSU can't afford a slow start. Just as important though, is a strong second half. Hoping for both!

I'll add that if something is working, keep doing it until Georgia forces you to stop!

It's so damn maddening to see Stroud pass over a 10 yard pass to a running back because he's trying to find the guy 30 yards down field -- or ignore green space in front of him that extends 20 yards, because he feels he has to pass the ball.

Please, CJ, remember that the simple answer is usually the right one.

It also helped that OSU exploited a RB turned CB over and over and over.  When it went away from that it was a pick in the EZ by Clark-Phillips. There certainly were some great throws and and great, great catches  (he fucking caught it!).

OSU will need their best versions to beat UGA.  That includes the coaches.  They can do it, I'm positive, but it's up to them. Time will tell.

HS
RickRocket's picture

Okay, we get it.  You (and others who always discount the Rose Bowl passing stats) want an asterisk on the Rose Bowl because Utah played an RB at CB.  Here you go.  *

You can still acknowledge that the passing game produced such F*ing HUGE numbers (573 passing yards on 79% completion rate, 10.2 yards per play total offense) that it was historically impressive on any scale.

Time and change will surely show how firm thy friendship, O HI O.

It also helped that Utah didn't have to defend two first round draft picks and got two players starting their first game at WR.

HS
CreekBuck's picture

True. But those 1st rounders were replaced by 2 more future 1st rounders (JSN/Marvin) stepping up. Even if one was starting his first game (Marvin). He did get reps (not a lot), just needed the opportunity to deliver.  And boy did he deliver!  Julian/Emeka did ok 8 catches for 81 yds between the two.  Not sure which started the game.

It certainly was an amazing aerial display no matter who was defending JSN/Marvin.  Day/Stroud did play to their strengths and Utah's weakness as any good team should.  Buckeyes will need more of that vs UGA. Not sure what the weakness of UGA defense is? I guess secondary?  Seemed to give up a lot of passing yards to LSU but that could be contributed to game was in hand when most of that yardage was accumulated.  OSU will need some sense of balance to keep defense honest but the strength of the team is QB/WRs. So, let's hope OSU has a Rose Bowl like offensive explosion while the defense has a 2022 Wisconsin/Iowa 1st Half .

Agreed but I think it is important to understand that Georgia scores a lot of points and reasonable to assume they will score against osu.

So regardless, yes we want stops but the offense needs to be able to execute production. Something, they didn't do when they needed to against ttun in the second half, no matter of the blame falls on coaches or players or both.

Ohio State’s offense has maddeningly treated its own cheat codes like actual cheating

There is simply no better way to say this. Xavier Johnson is not the star of this team. Cade Stover is not the most reliable pass catcher. This team doesn't have to only throw the ball, it can run too, but when they do throw, they should throw it to any one of the multiple 5 star receivers. Stop trying to trick people into a former walk-on TD. Excellent article, Ramzy. As always!

It doesn't matter that there was a paper trail with the e-mail to Coach Tressel. He could still be the coach here if he wanted to be, settling in as CEO coach as long as he could still the climb the tower at practice like old Bobby Bowden. All he had to do was print the e-mail, walk it down the hall to compliance, and say we might have some trouble here. Instead, he DIDN'T do that, and he signed a compliance form acknowledging that he was not aware of any potential violations, and that right there was the ballgame. A 7th grade volleyball coach knows you can't put kids out to play when they might be ineligible - which he did.

I know it all seems quaint now - tattoos and marijuana, when we now have million-dollar NIL and the state licenses marijuana dispensaries - like watching old black and white movie tone news reels. But Coach Tressel said he was concerned for safety in relation to a tattoo parlor guy from the west side of Columbus, when he was the highest paid employee in the state, working for the largest entity in the state. A fatal flaw - all he had to do was give the e-mail to somebody. There still would have been an investigation, but he would have been okay. Instead.....

It's not a popular opinion, but I agree. He admitted as much when he said his primary goal was to protect his players. But I also realize that at the time, they weren't legal, and there has to be consequences.

BULL  Jim Tressel as soon as he found out went to GENE SMITH and told Gene what he had just learned.  Or DO YOU FORGET where the UNIVERSITY President initially voice unwavering support for Tressel going so far as to say Tress could fire him...

The reason Tress got fired is through back channels OSU learned (BOT) that If the HC job came open he was interested.  The BOD through the back channels basically came to an agreement in principle,  Gene Smith was barely involved in the hire of Urban Meyer.

Yeah Jim signed a compliance form saying he knew of no violations what was he going to do after he was told by Smith that the AD would take care of it... Beyond that these kids swapped trinkets for tats... if you think that's a big deal, your nuts and that kind of thing had been going on EVERYWHERE in college programs.

Your fatal flaw only works when you DONT know what actually happened.

You WIN with people.

You're correct, on everything.

It's also why I'm one of the few on here that occasionally comments on Gene Smith's sliminess.

HS
Little Mikey's picture

So the AD is now more powerful than the Coach. I realize he is the boss, but to most he is just a pencil pushing administrator while Coach Tressel was beloved and respected. So "Machiavelli" Gene Smith was puppet master behind the scenes and hung Tressel out to dry? How come none of this is public knowledge? Nothing is a secret any longer. And yes I remember watching the press conference where President Gee said " fire him? I hope he doesn't fire me." So in your telling, Gene Smith is more powerful than the Coach or the President. I will respectfully say I am not buying it.

Michael

HS
Buckets At Fletcher's's picture

Mikey, Tress told Smith. Smith buried it. When it was at risk to come out that Gene knew, opening up OSU to a potential Lack of Institutional Control charge from the NCAA, Tress fell on his sword to save the program. Tress was out either way because of the BOD. Tress could've burned Smith and OSU to the damn ground if he wanted to. Smith knew and he tried to bury it. That's why many here who know this still have contempt for Gene Smith despite his good track record.

The team needs to have fun. I mean it. When was the last time Day or Stroud or the team looked happy? The 2014 run started in the dumps after Virginia Tech. No one was happy. And then we kept winning. And then Cardale came in. He played with joy. The team played with joy. . . . The Buckeyes against TSUN looked tough and serious and mean. But they also looked tight and stressed . . . TSUN, I hate to say it, was having fun. . . . Unfortunately, I think Day and Stroud are both have a bit of Debby Downer in them and so I don't see this changing. In every picture at a recruit's house, Day's smile seems pasted on.

Cherry picking Rose Bowl facts to fabricate a narrative?

1. What was he biggest problem, esp. at the start?
The 2 star WRs copping out for the NFL draft.

2. Where is the evil genius of Evil Ryan, esp in big games?
(Even against patsy teams, Ryan's OSU usually starts slow.)
And then against top teams:
3 pts in 1st qtr in loss to Oregon
7 pts in 1st half against Notre Dame
3 pts in 1st qtr versus Penn State
3 pts in 1st qtr loss to Michigan
0 pts in 1st qtr versus Utah
but, but...
OSU was ahead at half time in 2nd loss to Michigan
when the Evil Ryan unleashed 3 pts in the 2nd half.

Well I really hope to see that the 2020 win versus a top Clemson team was not an aberration!

We are in the process of finding out if Ryan Day is a big time head football coach or a great O coord, QB guru and play caller. I wonder if he just has too much on his plate right now or he doesn't have the Presence, Gravitas, Moxie, Toughness, whatever you want to call it to HC a perennial NC contender and take home the Big Trophy more often than not. It's a big ask, but that is the expectation at tOSU!

Both teams have talent but IMO Georgia runs the Buckeyes off the field early and often. Georgia is the class of college football and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. Urbans teams were brutal and seemed to enjoy slapping teams around. Georgia reminds me of those Urban teams.

HS
Cornholio's picture

Evil Ryan Day shows up when he calls 2 or 3 pass plays for every run (just take a glance at the quarter by quarter box score for that Rose Bowl). So all of the "but we need to run the ball against GA" crowd need to understand that "running the ball" means like 15-20 carries. Even if it works from time to time, you go back to the passing game. Even when you average 6 yds per carry, like we did with Notre Dame, you go back to the passing game.

And, I'm good with that. I want Marvin to convert every third and short. It also extends the game for the best offense in football; i.e., us. Running the ball is a change-up, you do it when it will hit because they are not expecting it, not because of some obligation to spend equal amounts of snaps on both methods of gaining yardage.

Just hope that Stroud doesn't have 17 misses like he did against UM. Not all on him, but 31-47 ain't gonna get it done. He needs to be like 40-50 with another 20 or so carries from the RBs when you see something you like.

HS
StoneCold MattAustin's picture

if Stroud accepts simple and easy options that produce results, like a checkdown throw to a running back - doesn’t even matter which one! - when everyone else is occupied downfield.

Well stated and I saw this happen a lot against Michigan. If the defense isn’t giving you the deep ball don’t try to take it. Be patient with how the game develops. Georgia will take what OSU’s defense will give them

Evil Day all the way!  I'm hoping the bucks open it up full throttle and embrace the underdog role and the opportunity to play in a dome.

I've sipped a bit of my dad's scotch back in the day, and nearly choked every time (my sister on the other hand was his drinking buddy and could match him shot-for-shot).  He preferred Glenlivet 15, sometimes splurging for the 18.  Anyway, what is the difference in taste between scotch and bourbon?  Can you really tell the differences between different brands of bourbon?  I assume so, I can definitely tell the difference between a $12 bottle of red wine versus a $30 bottle of the same type, but hard liquor is so strong I would think it might be a little more difficult to do so, but someone who is not a wuss like me probably can lol.

Coaches need a game plan and strategy to start the game with “if/then” options built in. Too many times do we come into a game with a base plan, use the first half to feel it out, and then adjust at half. We need to play an entire game where we’re trying to better than our opponent.
