Michigan Fires Co-Offensive Coordinator Matt Weiss Amid Investigation Into “Computer Access Crimes”

Crime happened between 21-23 Dec yet he's just now placed on leave? Did he coach in the CFP semifinal? Seems to be the Michigan way now to sweep things under the rug until the time is right.....

HS
logamaniac's picture

If a crime was committed it’s probable nobody was aware until someone brought it to the attention of whoever is investigating.  That’s going to be the interesting part, when was it discovered?

HS
woodyson's picture

Not sure they should get the benefit of the doubt given how the school and da handled the Mazi Smith matter.

HS
Trazycan's picture

It says in the article that someone reported on Jan 5th. That was after the cfp game.

HS
Eph97's picture

Did Harbaugh know or ok what Weiss was doing is the most interesting question.

HS

I have a hard time believing that Weiss hacked Jim’s email and sent messages without Jim asking him to do it.

Can they just shut that cesspool down?

NCAA better come in with the hammer on Harbaugh too. Lying to the NCAA should automatically result in a show-cause.

HS
MediBuck's picture

First Mazi Smith, then Harbaugh lying to the NCAA (haha), and now this? What kind of semi-organized criminal enterprise does UM have going on up in Ann Arbor anyway?

the semi-organized criminal enterprise you are wondering about would be University of Miami 2.0

I'm just really curious about the nature of the "computer access crimes".  What the heck does that mean?   Did he hack into the pentagon to steal secrets or did he dowload kiddie porn or something sick like that?

CP would be federal, so it isn't that.

I am just a pitcher and not a federal investigator but this sounds to me like the guy was potentially fixing grades.  Seems to align with Michigan's academic calendar timing as well.

While Harbaugh's program and fans were busy judging others, they left their closet door open and the skeletons are falling out.

The Detroit News has a detailed article on this. I’m on a phone and the link is really long. Possibly someone more capable can link it here. Weiss came to U/M from the Ravens in 2021 and is living in a home in AnnArbor purchased for $1.5 M by an entity known as Old Pro ? Something seems strange about that and more so that the News would feature that fact in the story.

HS

Most of the "famous" rich people you've heard of live in homes owned by trusts or corporations.  It's a way to make it hard for stalkers to find them.  (As well as surely giving some tax benefits.)

report of computer access crimes

What the hell does that mean?  Weiss logged into JH's computer to email someone from JH's account?  I have never heard of "computer access crimes".  And, who reports this?  I didn't even know we had laws on the books for this stuff.  Too early to make any sort of judgement, but odd nonetheless.

That which can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence.

HS
CincyBuck's picture

There's at least one federal statute I'm aware of pertaining to accessing computers, networks, etc. without authorization.  That said, I kind of doubt that's the type of thing that'd make national news in this situation.  My guess would be it's a euphemism for something pretty bad.

HS
kiester's picture

Maine, my best guess (based on half a career working at a University and have seen 'computer access crimes' come up a total of two times during that span) is that its related to unauthorized access to one of UoM's student data bases -- could be registrar information, or it could be grades, or something along those lines. Emphasis on 'could be'.

It hasnt been mentioned here (yet), but before it does -- very highly unlikely its the worse kind of internet crimes that some could imagine, because campus police were investigating (rather than state police or FBI if it were CP or something gross like that).

HS
ShawneeBuck74's picture

Computer access crimes is just a fancy way of saying HACKING.

My guess, like others, is that he was fixin' grades.

HS
JohnnyKozmo's picture

That just doesn't make sense to me...an OC hacking into an email to adjust grades?  Is he that dumb?  There's a digital trail for everything these days...there aren't tutors he could've paid to do that?  It may be what ends up coming out, but man...what a dumb way to go down if that's it.

HS

YES..because if this happened at MSU or OSU, UM fans would "sit tight" and wait for all the pertinent facts to come in, right?

HS
oldcinci's picture

Having the 'campus police department' investigate the matter sounds like it is pretty tame. My guess, for which I have no particular evidence or expertise, is that when viewing workout video footage online, an account and its credentials were borrowed. That may be a crime at that particular school. It is dire disrespect to speculate about unproven allegations, and the assumption of innocence is afforded to all concerned. But it is, after all, That particular school.

HS
buckeyeupnorth's picture

Would campus police have jurisdiction to enter his home ? If he gave permission, does that preclude obtaining a warrant to search his house?

HS
Buckeye_bob's picture

I would say the Only way Campus Police could search his home is if it is on campus. Weiss was fired for it so it was not too tame! Depends on what he did or to whom he did it.

Another coach from the Ravens pipeline. Jim really needs Big Brother's help. Well, he just needs help period.

Something really smells in Ann Arbor, and it isn't the week old salmon in the dumpster behind Zingerman's.

HS
blu.fan's picture

Someone with a source has indicated that he was sending emails to recruits in the name of JH, which is possibly done elsewhere, but which is illegal. HOWEVER, the poster at mgoblog adds a caveat. Apparently, the source, while connected, is in Weiss's corner, and is inclined to paint things in a favorable manner.

The one thing that seems pretty clear (thankfully) is that no child pornography is involved.

HS

He was probably just ordering milk and steak for the big guy and borrowed his account.
Wonder who the Ravens will send to scum to replace him?

How do you spell, "Lack of Institutional Control"? Also, I wonder how it feels on third base now. Third base in Ann Arbor that is. Any more Raven's hand outs available? Maybe the one who did the clock management vs the Bengals Sunday.

According to public records, “an employee reported fraudulent activity involving someone accessing university emails accounts without authorization” on Jan. 5 at Schembechler Hall.

If this aligns to why Weiss is being investigated, he could have accessed accounts of other players to gain insight into things like general feeling towards coaches, transfer rumors/details, etc (essentially spy on them). He also could have sent messages from someone else's account posing as them. And that's all illegal. While it was stated it's unclear if the investigation is related to the NCAA probe, there's a clear amount of smoke when it comes to the actions of UM's coaches of late.

HS

Nothing will happen.  It’ll get very little major media coverage and nothing of the timing of the situation will blowback on UM at all.  If it’s serious, he’ll be fired but not much beyond that.  UM has an uncanny ability to stay out of the news when bad situations happen…the Fab 5 being the exception.

Not disagreeing with you, but what I'd add to your remark is that what's missing from the story: some debauchery or rumored debauchery like moeller's punch or that president several years ago.  Sorry, I cannot stand that school.

One thing that stands out about this is everyone in Michigan's silence.  There's been no statement of support from Harbaugh or the Admin.  If this was just some misunderstanding you would expect some show of support.  To my knowledge, there's not even a statement from his lawyer.

HS

Oh, so now we’re not talking about a “free cheeseburger” as all the TUN fans like to say. They are desperately trying to brush the dust off their ass after that loss to TCU and minimize all the negative attention.

It would be cool if Weiss somehow drags down Harbaugh with him. Remember how tattoo gate started? Seemed innocuous at the time and no one would have predicted it would take down Tressel.

My sources tell me the first unmarked car to arrive at Weiss' house was a Volkswagen Beetle, from which thirteen clowns emerged. The clown driving was shirtless, sipping milk straight out the bottle, not thinking 'bout tomorrow. . .

And Mazi Smith is headed to the NFL never having had suffered any consequences for his felony arrest.

Michigan Men!

HS
buckeyeupnorth's picture

Not quite. But notice that Michigan stuck by him, he was allowed to play after a magistrate allowed him to go out of state, and he suffered zero consequences from Michigan, He pled this down to a misdemeanor.

https://www.cbsnews.com/detroit/news/michigan-lineman-mazi-smith-gets-probation-in-gun-case/

Remember he claimed he had done everything he needed to do to get his license? Well, not really. He had not even  applied  or completed his application for his license. ( note his statement he hadn't "turned " in his certificate, which you don't" turn in." You apply for a license,in person, including bringing a photo and fingerprints, your signed certificate from your CC class instructor, and a cash or check to the county clerks office, swear an oath that what you are bringing in valid, and then wait 30 days for approval via the county sheriff who does a background check. If approved, you are notified and then you come in to pick up your license.). So his story is bogus, and the fact they let him get off with a misdemeanor as did the player from Eastern Michigan who not only had a concealed weapon but that weapon had the serial numbers filed off tells you all you need to know about the prosecutor here.

40 hours of community service, LOL. Sure, I bet we'll see Mazi out along 94 pickup up trash in an orange vest any time soon.

HS

Also Mazi Smith from another Report is STUPID!

1.He was pulled over for excessive speed (so over 10 MPH)

2. Knew he didn't have a Drivers License.

3. Knew he had an unregistered loaded gun in the car, which the Loaded Gun is a FF Crime of it's own!

Saw it posted over on MGO by a user others said has been right on some other things, that Weiss used Harbaughs email account, evidently unknowingly, to email recruits.  I find it hard to believe that's it.

HS
terryin20878's picture

Had not considered that.  Admittedly, I can't keep up with all the ever-changing rules on recruiting.  Certainly could be, "I can't contact a recruit at this time, but (one of our players?) can".

HS
AltaBuck's picture

It happened during the dead period so my money is on Weiss accessing player email accounts to contact recruits.

HS
AltaBuck's picture

I just read that coaches can contact recruits via email during the dead period so maybe it was a combination of accessing email accounts for both coaches and players.

WHY would you even do that?

"FireKevinWarren"

HS
buckeye81's picture

Re Weiss, I'm really curious as to what he was doing. Even the dumbest dolt has to know that hacking emails at the university where you work is risky business. Why would he do that? It would be hard to adjust grades that way. Students don't communicate with each other by email so that doesn't wash. He wasn't spying on players private info, is what I mean. Was he going into accounts to scrub things out that he didn't want to see the light of day? Was he trying to get a read on administrative decisions? It's strange that scUM did not support him at all. Never said a word, really. He kind of did a lot for that program and now it's, like, 'who? Weiss? I don't recall any Weiss".

Those who stay will become scUMbags.
