I’ll gladly take that bet with an OSU team coming off a tough game and hearing that they’ve been “exposed”. Let’s have that o-line and backfield running angry against a weak Indiana team.

HS
The Rill Dill's picture

After they got punked at Michigan last year, they shouldn’t need any motivation to prove themselves, but that’s not what we’re seeing play out.

What are you seeing play out? They've won every game this season fairly comfortably, even when they can't pass due to 50 mph winds and the entire other team is lined up to stop the run, they won by two scores.

HS
Buckeyzfan1's picture

Will there be a 30MPH+ wind with gusts of 40 and rain driven by the wind? If so, then the spread is TOO HIGH!

I was looking at that earlier.  71 on Friday and only 43 on Saturday.  That doesn't happen without some wind.

HS

Exactly. They're only forecasting 10-15 mph winds in Columbus Saturday, but you're right, you don't get changes in temperature that drastic without quite a bit of wind.

Same here. I'm shocked the spread is that high after the shit show in Evanston. I wouldn't be shocked to see them roll up 600 yards and 60 points but I also wouldn't be shocked to see them struggle again. We'll see

Vegas tends to not overreact like severely myopic fanbases.  IU is not good.  OSU is very good.  They are at home, looking to bounce back.  Weather shouldn't be too much of an issue.

The over under tells you something too, at 55.  They are projecting for something like 47-8 then. IUs offensive style should play right into our defense's strengths. The defense should feast.  OSUs offense will be looking to get back on track, so I think they put up big numbers too.

HS
Knite's picture

NW wasn't that great either, and we all seen that song and dance.

HS

Wasn't Northwestern what was needed for a lack luster running game?

Yea.

HS
Extramedium's picture

They are very good but are they HARD?? Does it count to win by 40 if you do it while being soft?

Wouldn't it be better to struggle to be tied with IU 10-10 at the half and eventually win by 20 as long as you did it while being hard?

Correct. Ohio State hasn't covered the last two games. Yesterday's game was super easy money if anybody looked at the weather.

Yet some fans hype these great big spreads and then I think the players here too much chatter and become complacent.  The first half yesterday the team showed zero energy.

HS
The Rill Dill's picture

Showed no energy?….hell, they came out FLAT in the Notre Dame game.  It is a pattern. They are UNPREPARED to play.

Just play. Have fun. Enjoy the game. -- Michael Jordan

He's 4-4-1 against the spread
Ummm... isn't that the whole point of the spread?
If you set it right it's met half the time?

HS
ronaprhys's picture

Well, no.  Not really.  The point of the spread is for Vegas to make money - so half the money is on one side, half on the other.  But, depending on the dollars, that doesn't actually translate to 50% of the games.

It’s hard to know anything based on how many players will show up on the unavailable list and how conservative Day calls plays.

It’s become apparent to me that he really doesn’t give a shit for style points and is simply preparing for the end of the season.

The ‘19 team was our best ever.

HS
PRO8's picture

I think there are formations and running plays he is saving for the right time,  so he is going to be vanilla most of the time and throw something new in here and there...  keep them guessing but not so much that they, the opposing D's down the line, will have a good handle  on these different plays and formations.... you don't use these for the Iowa's , NW , Rutgers, etc.. unless you have to,  just a thought ... that said CJ running a few more times a game could help loosen up the opposing D if you do it enough at different times also... as we seen with NW we can make some big plays

HS
SalemBuckeye's picture

I agree that Day is likely prepping for Michigan but 3 weeks of bad running is either injuries or scheme or both.

At this point, are we still saying "let's get the running game going" ?

Screw it, we are what we are.  Throw it everywhere.

HS
Shtinkycat1's picture

The running game was going great until Iowa (three weeks ago). Iowa stacked the d-line and trusted their d-backs to cover, the #3 defense can do that. PSU did the exact same thing, probably saw success on the Iowa film. NW is a little different because the weather was huge, but NW also stacked the line. This is counter to the first six weeks when ND showed to drop 7-8 back.

Shatinkycat1

HS
Buckeyzfan1's picture

After looking at the box score for GA vs TN, I would say we need to run/pass equally well. So, (1) we need the run game with two healthy RBs (2) we need the road graders on offense to move the obstacles allowing run success (3) we need a good day for passing, a healthy offensive line and skill players, ...and bonus (5) we need great offensive play calling.

To go and win 6 more games we need a balanced offense and a ruthless defense, the latter to keep healthy and continue to excel.

Indiana is a pretty poor team. At home, with decent conditions, we'll have no issue doing whatever we want to them.

If the NW game had been in Columbus it would have been the 52-3 game a lot of us expected to see.

"porque las estirpes condenadas a cien años de soledad no tenían una segunda oportunidad sobre la tierra."

HS
RBloodworth's picture

The wind, while not as bad as what appeared on television in Evanston, was pretty strong in Columbus on Saturday afternoon as well (strong enough to take down at least one tree in my neighborhood).  It would have impacted the passing game here, too.

I am hoping for some kind of adjustment to the blocking schemes in the running game this week, but aren’t holding my breath.  At the very least, I would at least like to see a more dialed-in mental focus from the team, but, there’s no way that they cover 38 points.  No way in hell.  IU has been far better at throwing the ball than running it- if the wind is a recurring theme this week, at least they will have problems scoring as well.

HS

Ohio State actually leads the series 78-12-5.  The 2010 victory happened.

HS
hitlikemikedoss's picture

I am 100% convinced that there was no NW specific game plan. Meaning offensive and defensive game plan was literally water flavored ice cream deliberately. What if the staff KNOWS they don’t need style points OR to open up the play book at all to win these games against Iowa, NW, Indiana or Maryland? Now what I think the team is pissed about and the reason the points have been so low; sub par line play. Terrible blocking on offense and on defense lack of violently shedding blockers.

OSU ALUM

HS
mb5599's picture

They were in real danger of losing the last two games.  Can't believe that day would be "holding something back".  This team starts out slow against most teams.  Going to catch up with them eventually.  Its like they have no game plan.

Big B

HS
Shtinkycat1's picture

I think there is a game plan, but Day doesn’t appear to want to adjust until the start of the second half, and in same games later. I think he believes that his plan and team is better so eventually they will take over. It’s obvious to the untrained eye that defenses have to pick between coverage deep or stacking they line.

Shatinkycat1

HS
hitlikemikedoss's picture

I don’t think they are holding back persay. I think they simply running a very vanilla game plan. But I don’t think that’s the issue. I think the bye killed the momentum the team had going and they are slumping trying to get that mojo back. It might actually be a blessing to hit a slump and have to get it back. Thus firing on all cylinders for the final push. Again my issue is poor line play and defenders not getting off blocks not the play calling.

They were in danger of losing at Northwestern? That’s a bit dramatic, don’t you think? They were down by 7 once in the first half. They then scored 21 straight points.

It never felt to me like the Buckeyes were in danger of losing that game.

HS

I’d be surprised if we get 30-40 mph winds in the Shoe Saturday so I expect us to light up the scoreboard with passing TDs. Expect IU HC Tom Allen to blitz safeties in the A and B gaps on many obvious passing downs, like they did in 2020 when they came back from 35-0 to lose by 7, 42-35. I think we win 42-7. Go Bucks!!

I hope Kevin Wilson (who was head coach at Indiana a few years ago) gets to call the offense, or have more of a say in what Day calls.

Goals for this game:

- I want to see the WRs block better.  I thought MH, Jr. was not blocking well against NW.

- If you want to run the ball, you need Mitch Rossi in the game.  Cade may be a better receiver but Mitch is a better blocker and also sometimes can carry the ball and get you that yard.

- Let's pass the ball to set up the run.

- Let's run it between the tackles some.  I know we got that in our tool box but we can't hide it until November 26th.

- defense, you're just fine!

- and finally, whatever the weather, you gotta play tough.

OSU 48, Indiana 16.

HS
Carpetbagger's picture

It doesn't seem to me like this is a toughness issue, but more of a scheme/execution issue.  They like to start out with the outside zone running game, which they just don't appear able to execute properly 90% of the time.  When they switch to gap / power, and the O linemen can just fire off the line, they look a lot more competent.  Maybe they just need to do this instead of insisting on the east/west stretch play looking to hit a big one all the time.  A 3-5 yard base expectation is valuable and does more than enough to set up play action for the passing game.

I love Big Brother, and the 11W commenting policy.

HS
I'm Ron Burgundy's picture

Agree 100%.  We continue to waste downs and series early in these past several games, stubbornly trying to do something we are not good at (outside zone and the quick toss plays).  When we change it up to things we are good at (inside zone and power, and now CJ zone read keepers!), we have success.  It's an oversimplification, but seems to hold true.  It is not simply the coaches "making adjustments", because for 3 games now the same running plays that fail, continue to fail, and the same running plays that work, continue to work.  Might want to go with what works a little sooner guys.

HS
Carpetbagger's picture

I'll draft the letter for us to Ryan Day, Ron.  We've solved it!  ;-)

IMO, there's certainly a place for the OZ/stretch plays, but it doesn't look like it should be the foundation of our run game.

I love Big Brother, and the 11W commenting policy.
