Ohio State’s Efficiency Beyond the 3-Point Line Gives Buckeyes Reason to Shoot More Threes

My only concern would be impacting ball movement by attempting more 3s.  If we are moving the ball well and finding good looks from 2, I’d rather have the higher percentage shots.

shootings 3s doesn’t have to impact ball movement, but just seems most teams use it as an excuse to “settle “ for a 3.

I also think we are shooting timely 3s. Sometimes it seems like McNeil is jacking them up before they need to be , but nothing egregious.

I really like how the team is playing right now, I might be extrapolating my expectations too much, but this is a much more fun offense to watch that in years past.

We are tenth in the country in offensive rebounding efficiency. 8 percentage points better than last year, only 2 points behind Purdue who is fourth yet we are doing it with an undersized lineup. I attribute part of that to not jacking up to many 3s that seem to reduce your chances at getting an offensive board close in for a put back. Missed 3s also create more opportunities for run-outs by the opposing team after getting the defensive rebound as 3s tend to spread out where players are for both teams.

As we see on the graphic Penn State is way out there on 3s. But they are also 358th out of 363 teams in offensive rebounding efficiency. Heck, despite having Hunter Dickenson ttun ranks 265th.

I will take how they are operating now versus pushing for more 3s.

Taking well timed and uncontested 3 pointers tends helps with efficiency. Increasing shots can have a negative effect if it is forced under unfavorable conditions.

Exactly. This is the best offense since Thad coached the Buckeys.

Agree.  Jacking up 3s tends to lead to lazy offense and taking bad shots.  We only need to take more good look 3s if they are there. I'm fine with where we are.

I hate articles like this before a big game. Makes me think we're going to shoot a ton of 3's and miss a lot of them.

I say take it inside, get their big guy in foul trouble, and make our free throws. Rinse and repeat. Also, make their big guy run the floor, so try to run a bit more and take advantage of the fast break when it's available.

If they key on Sensabaugh then we should see some open guys get some looks.

This team doesn't just throw up 3 pointers like the teams in past. I like that about this team. The guys that can't shoot them, for the most part, don't. Bryce,. Bruce and McNeil should shoot more, but obviously not at the expense of any easier shot inside.

It’s a bit surprising that Zed Key has made treys at a higher rate than Justice Sueing.

But Justice has shot 73% more of them than Zed.

Seems a little ridiculous to me to suggest shooting more 3s when we are rated as # 2 offense on kenpom. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. I’d say we shoot a high percentage because we take smart 3s. I wouldn’t even say this is a great 3 pt shooting team overall. Obviously Brice is an incredible shooter, but I would only say we really have 3 good 3 pt shooters. I feel like the past several teams have had way more than 3 good shooters. I do expect Roddy to develop into a good shooter though. Instead of nitpicking the offense  they should figure out how to improve defensively.

Agreed — including rebounding a bit better.

There might be 7'4" reasons to shoot more 3's tonight. We shall see....

This team has 3 losses the first one was a team not knowing their teammates, they quickly put it together and now they share the ball they get the ball into the paint and they even transition with great efficiency, They do shoot at a 37.5 % clip from 3 but why in the world would you want them to shoot more 3 point baskets? They take good shots they all share the ball to get better shots. Clueless post!

The number of 3’s does not need to increase. Many games/stretches we pound the ball inside to Key. Sueing works to get into the paint (one can see by his 3 point pct he does not need to jack up more threes). Brice can score from anywhere 3pt shot, midrange and around the basket.  Thornton shoots the 3 well but he does a really good job of getting into the lane and getting shots up and getting fouled and getting to the line. So, the article is really wrong don’t change what you are doing. Okay, if you want to say McNiel,Sensabaugh,Thornton and Holden should shoot more 3’s then sure with there pct but that’s it - just because as a team we are shooting a good pct. we don’t want Sueing and Key and Likekele (god no) shooting more 3’s. Getting into the paint and attacking the basket causes defenses to collapse and 3’s become more open and a lot easier to make.

Seems the article is a bit prophetic, think Holtmann will encourage the guys to shoot it if its there, especially as teams will try to take away Sensabaughs game, leave guys like McNeil, Thornton, Sueing, Gayle(if he get some minutes) free to pop it.

I’m all for guys taking open looks when they have them, but I’m glad to see many others here agree with me- they don’t necessarily need to take more threes.  Like the others have said, we have outstanding offensive efficiency already.  Honestly McNeil has been unlucky a bit and I think his % will tick up nearer to 40 by the end of the season.

But I think part of the reason they’re shooting so well is they’re taking good shots in the flow of the offense.  On paper this wasn’t necessarily going to be an outstanding shooting team coming into the year and I think they’ve gotten where they are by running good O and getting good looks.  Don’t see much of a reason to change that yet.  Now matchups like tonight might require an adjustment, but I don’t think it’s fair to just say these guys need to shoot more threes.  If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

OSU has to take and make more 3s, you don't say...;)

I think our best shooters are already taking 3s when they are available.  The guys that are passing up threes (Key, Likekele, Sueing) are probably guys that we don't want taking more of them.  As others have mentioned, one of the reasons that we've been efficient shooters is that we aren't forcing them.

Now, tonight, worth a shot to have Key take one or two from the top of the key to see if we can pull Edey out from the lane.

Buckeyes are taking two less threes a game and shooting the same percentage over the last several years. Why is this even an article? McNeil and Sensabaugh are your most proficient 3 ball shooters but you want them to attack the rim to keep the opposing defense honest. This Buckeye team doesn't need to jack up threes. The team is fine with greater dribble penetration, attacking the rim and getting higher percentage looks around the basket. Shooting more threes makes the offense more stagnant, you need good ball movement for a basketball offense.
