Skull Session: Official Peach Bowl Trailers Are Here, C.J. Stroud Shows Off His Artistry Skills and Paris Johnson Jr. Writes a Letter to Buckeye Nation

Hype videos are great, as long as we walk out with a W..I'm still sour from our final regular season game unfortunately..

I saw a mock draft this morning that showed Paris Johnson going 9th overall to the raiders, and it didn't even have CJ anywhere on that board in round 1..this game will define who he is, and potentially his future..he has to get it done, no hiding behind your line waiting for someone to get open, if you see that opportunity, take it and run!

  • The Will To Win by Berton Braley

If you want a thing bad enough
To go out and fight for it,
Work day and night for it,
Give up your time and your peace and your sleep for it
If only desire of it
Makes you quite mad enough
Never to tire of it,
Makes you hold all other things tawdry and cheap for it
If life seems all empty and useless without it
And all that you scheme and you dream is about it,
If gladly you'll sweat for it,
Fret for it,
Plan for it,
Lose all your terror of God or man for it,
If you'll simply go after that thing that you want,
With all your capacity,
Strength and sagacity,
Faith, hope and confidence, stern pertinacity,
If neither cold poverty, famished and gaunt,
Nor sickness nor pain
Of body or brain
Can turn you away from the thing that you want,
If dogged and grim you besiege and beset it,

YOU'LL GET IT!

FORGE YOUR DESTINY.
IT IS TIME TO RISE ABOVE CRITICISM
AND SHOW US WHO YOU REALLY ARE.
WHO AMONG THIS TEAM WILL RISE TO THE OCCASION?
THE WORLD IS WATCHING.  DO IT.
FOR THE BROTHERHOOD.

GO BUCKS!

Hall of Fame coach LaVell Edwards said most at this level have the will to win.  The winners have the will to prepare.

The the greatest living coach, not named Saban, said before the Michigan game, if you're looking at the rankings, you're looking at the wrong thing. The most prepared team will win.

For psychologist Urban "Friggin" Meyer that included preparing mentally and emotionally.

This poem is really about long hours of work and preparation.

Which is apropos, IMO.

This team worked really hard, from what I understand, for quite a while, upon hearing of their seed, from coaching to players.

I thought about Marvin Harrison Jr., In particular, who was hitting the weights And JUGS machine really hard, and relentlessly, when he was pissed off that he didn't win the Biletnikoff Award.

...and then others joined him. And became intense. I've heard of others also becoming pissed off, at the criticism, and trained hard, and watched tape longer.

I was not blessed with the God given physical abilities and attributes that Paris and the Buckeyes possess but I do have an overwhelming love and passion (some have said obsession) for the Buckeyes. Win or lose, I am severely emotionally impacted by their games. I cannot take the field with them Saturday night (obviously) but my heart and soul will be with them. I know they can beat Georgia.

Well said BNGLBCK, most of Buckeye Nation feel the same. Each game, especially the biggest ones exact an emotional (sometimes physical) toll on us fans win or lose but we're still there in the stands or in a middle linebacker stance 3 feet from the T.V. (max volume), ready to make a tackle.
I imagine that'll be my scene tomorrow night at 8pm.

BTW: Harbaugh was 0-5 vs tOSU.

Right, because at Stanford, Harbaugh was 29-21, 58% winning % and never played for an NC.

Day is 45-5 with a 90% winning % and has already played for an NC.

I’m no Harbaugh fan by any stretch, but your comment loses all merit when you compare any coach’s success at Stanford to one at Ohio State. There are significant inherent advantages when taking over an OSU program coming off of 7 years under Urban Meyer as compared to a Stanford program suffering thru 3 seasons of Buddy Teevens (who?) and 2 with Walt Harris, whose final season was 1-11.

You’re also completely ignoring the fact that Harbaugh is 2-1 (games played, should be 2-2) head to head versus Day, and has been HC for a CFP team twice.

Not for nothing, but in 2010, Harbaugh’s final season coaching Stanford, the Cardinal went 12-1 and were ranked #4 in the final BCS rankings. Had there been a CFP, they would’ve been in it.

LOL   Sorry Navy.

Playoff expansion back in 2010?

2010 Stanford entered the Orange Bowl ranked #5 vs #12 Va Tech and won that game finishing #4.

You’re looking at the AP rankings. In the BCS rankings on Dec 5, Stanford was 11-1 and ranked #4, ahead of Wisconsin and OSU.

You’re the one who decided to compare coaches in different eras.

Wow.  You seem like a good dude, but I pretty much disagree with most of your posts.

So the level of competition doesn’t factor in at all for you?  I am happy we pummeled Rutgers.  We played exactly one playoff team this year. At home.  And they lost by more than 3 td’s.  Hope springs eternal and all, but you really are ignoring an important data point.  And below I see you are back at it quoting Vegas odds in fictitious games against teams we aren’t even playing to make God knows what point.  Ignoring the fact that we were heavy favorites against TTUN last two time we played them, why not talk about the spread in the UGA game, you know, the team\ we are actually playing?  I too hope like hell OSU wins, and they might, but dude, stop making ridiculous arguments.

You are entitled to you own opinion, not your own facts.

HS
NavyBuckeye91's picture

Please stop posting those. You’re using Saban’s weak-ass argument as to why Bama should be in the CFP. OSU isn’t playing neither of those teams this weekend. Those betting spreads don’t matter.

Moreover, OSU was a 9-point favorite over TTUN on Nov 26 - it didn’t mean shit.

HS
BucksHave7's picture

Navy.  The betting spreads do matter.

Oddsmakers overlook what is a bad 30 minutes vs TTUN for tOSU and look at the entire 3 month body of work.

Of course in a snapshot nothing is definite and anything is possible, but overtime it will resort to the mean.

I understand your doubts.  Due to the last 2 TTUN games and the seemingly lack of toughness by Stroud, it’s basically I have to see it to believe it game.  We have the talent to win, but do we have the coaching, mental toughness, and discipline to win?   Bottom line, will they capitalize on a shot at redemption or waste it?  Cardale, went from the school tweet guy to a Buckeye legend in 6 weeks.  Day and Stroud can go from “soft” bums to Buckeye legends in the next 10 days.  I hope they prove the doubters like you and I wrong!   But, I have to see it to believe it.  Go Bucks!!

This lack of toughness for Stroud narrative needs to stop.  He was trained to be a pocket passer, so after years of not running, he is now doing what he was taught.  Quarterbacks take vicious hits in this brutal sport, and it is beyond ridiculous for some internet troll to question Stroud’s toughness.  You’d shit your pants the first time a DE came within 3 feet of you.

PhillyNut's picture

All I ask is that they play to the best of their abilities and the coaches let them instead of going into a shell. If their best is not good enough then it is what it is. This is on the coaches to put them in the best position to win and to not be afraid to trust the players.

I still have my scarlet Ohio State t-shirt from 2014 that has the CFB playoff logo and the words, in large print, “WE BELIEVE,” on it. I think I got it for $18 at Kroger and I still wear it, even though it’s a bit tattered. I cut the sleeves off and now it’s a workout shirt for the gym, where I’ll be wearing it today when I go. Believe. That’s where it starts.

Great Ohioan Neil Armstrong, from Wapakoneta, Ohio, and the first person to walk on the moon, had to believe  what most thought impossible, was possible. And then he, along with his “team,” set about to make it happen.

Let’s make this happen! C’mon CJ! You and your team can do this! Go Buckeyes!

My wife (a Columbus native) has an Ohio State shirt I bought for her on Christmas 2002. She wore it watching the 2003 fiesta Bowl and we beat Miami. She also wore it during the 2014 title run. That shirt is threadbare, but she won't throw it away. She forgot to wear it last November and I was upset with her. She will wear it tomorrow for sure I'll make sure of that. Who knows, right? We are all wasting our time. According to everything I've heard on the major sports networks, the Buckeyes are done before they start. On CBS, the SEC network and even the Big Ten network, Georgia is too much to beat. But I don't watch ESPN so maybe they pick Ohio State to win, right? I don't know. IMO, the B1G network seems to want Michigan to win it all. But they ARE the Big Ten network, not the Ohio State network.

But then I experienced a Deja Vu moment and seemed to remember a time 20 years ago when the Buckeyes were written off before they strapped on their helmets. I can't exactly nail it down, but I will rely on this board to help me out. Does anyone else remember this happening? Oh, well maybe I'm just imagining the whole thing. After all, my mind does wander sometimes.

Here’s why it’s ok to be the underdog in this game. Even if we had beaten ttun, we would still be the underdog to Georgia. It’s meant to be. We’d probably be playing another team but no matter what, once we faced Georgia we’d be the underdogs.

HS
buckeyedude's picture

I've mentioned this on 11W before, Sunny, but your post triggered the memory again. Deja Vu indeed.

I was watching ESPN the day before the game in 2002 in Arizona. I can't remember the reporter's name (it might as well have been Mark May-the dude that wears women's underwear, but probably wasn't) but I do remember him asking Larry Coker the day before the game:

Reporter: "Ok, coach...how much are you going to beat Ohio State by?"

Larry Coker: "No. I'm not going there. Ohio State is a very good team and we have to be ready."

Reporter: "C'mon coach. You know they have no chance. How much are you going to win by?"

Larry Coker: "As I said, they are a very good team, or we wouldn't be playing them."

Reporter: "Really, Larry? Nobody is giving Ohio State any chance at all at winning this game."

Larry Coker: "Well, we'll need to play our best."

And I think he asked Larry this a few more times. Unreal. We CAN beat Georgia. They are not invincible and have looked very average at times this season.

As you get older, three things happen: The first is your memory goes, and I can't remember the other two.

HS
Sunny Buck's picture

There quite a few parallels between now and the 2002 game with Miami. Some mention 2014 but there were some that thought the Buckeyes had a chance, especially with Urban Meyer coaching. Nobody but nobody with any influence thought OSU had a chance in that Fiesta Bowl game as I recall. I consumed every bit of media I could before that game, and it was depressing.

The Canes were about to be crowned the greatest team in CFB history. Ohio State was a speed bump on the road to a title. Well, that didn't happen. Alabama was not revered in 2014 as much as Miami was in 2002.

Either way, tomorrow we are the underdog. History often repeats itself. Let's hope it repeats itself in the Peach Bowl. Win Buckeyes!

Not really parallels other than we were an underdog. ZERO people had us winning in 02. This year MANY think we can. Miami had one of the most talented teams in CFB history. This years Georgia team is VERY good but not close to that Miami team.

Football can be an odd game.  If JT Barrett the B1G Offensive Player of the Year does not go down with an injury against TTUN, we do not win against Bama and defeat Oregon for the National Championship at the end of the 2014 season.  The offense was defective and would not correct until a different QB was put in place and forced the change.  Not JT's fault.  I think a similar conceptual change will be made offensively and defensively Saturday.  I have no intel, just a hunch.  I am going to cheer for my team regardless of the outcome.  Enjoy the game.  If the outcome was fixed what would be the point of playing?

Our people are everywhere, Esto Dignus.

Fanboy error # 12, trying to make a point with rank speculation.  You may believe that is true, but we have no idea what happens with the winningest QB in OSU history starting those games.  Tired of this argument, but Cardale made some key plays but hardly carried this team.  The o line and Zeke and a resurgent\ defense were the primary reasons OSU won the title that year.

I really, really wish that we were doing a better job of keeping this "we're having fun/human interest" stuff off the social media and out of the media. I want Georgia to FEAR the Buckeyes, not think they're "nice guys." I mean, c'mon. Having CJ draw up a silly Brutus picture? It's demeaning. It's embarrassing. These are YOUNG MEN, and future professional football players, not kids at a Pop Warner youth football camp. I want them to be looking at the cameras like Clubber Lang in Rocky III. PAIN. Have all the laughs and the jokes and the fun OFF the camera. Even the "Peach Bowl Challenge Belt" or whatever, screw that crap. Family Feud?? Sigh. I don't care if it's "tradition" or "just for fun." Georgia is THE ENEMY. We can be friends AFTER the game. Do some joint press events like a boxing match. Fine. But FOCUS. Win the psychological battle. Make them FEAR you before you hit the field. Win the mental battle. Make them think we're mad and that we've been disrespected, not that we're "nice guys." They're calling us the "second chance Buckeyes" on the EPSN promo commercials, FFS. Literally NOBODY will care about anything that happens OFF the field after the game is over tomorrow. I really wish they'd have stayed in Columbus and got ready at the WHAC and flown in tonight or something. If this was the Charmin Toilet Bowl then fine, but this ain't that. This is the biggest game of the season so far with ALL the chips in the middle of the table. We're about to stuff the Bulldogs in a body bag. Act like it. *old man noises*

ESPN is treating this playoff like a documentary of the changing of the guard in the SEC and the new dynasty. And we’re the “second chance Buckeyes.” Fuck that. Get pissed off you sons of bitches!!! WIN!

Round on the ends and "HI" in the middle. O-HI-O.

You make very good points, OTBN. However, I like seeing the Buckeye players loosen up a bit after what happened in The Game. They played tight vs. TTUN and played "not to lose," which they proceeded to do.

I want to see these guys have fun and play LOOSE, not terrified to make a mistake. From my POV, I think it's good they are relaxing a bit. Too much intensity too soon and they won't be able to go four quarters. Focused intensity. Confidence. Not false bravado. That's what I liked about Urban Meyer in most big games.  Hopefully coach Day has the formula, like he did in the Rose Bowl.

As you get older, three things happen: The first is your memory goes, and I can't remember the other two.

I have absolutely, positively no problem with them "playing loose" and having fun. My problem is all the publicity from the media showing them doing it and parading them around. Screw that. There's a mental side to these games and we're being clowned. I don't know, perhaps its a thing I'm sensitive to when I see people making fun of people that don't know they're being made fun of. It's not funny, and they're making us look like clowns. We should be "playing loose" because we're confident and prepared, not because we won "family feud." JMHO.

Perhaps, OTBN, could we produce another tough motivational video of a mother fawning over her dear son?

Ua Mau ke Ea o ka 'Aina I ka Pono. The life of the land is preserved in righteousness. (Hawai'i state motto) Aloha nui kakou.

Literally. Or better yet, another 10 minute segment on mental health.

Having CJ draw up a silly Brutus picture? It's demeaning. It's embarrassing. These are YOUNG MEN, and future professional football players, not kids at a Pop Warner youth football camp.

Bah Humbug. Must have too much time on your hands

Stroud had open space to draw right in front of him. he needs to take that space and add to Brutus’ head or check down and add to his legs. instead, he goes for the dramatic flourishes.

Just read the full Paris letter on The Players' Tribune.

Wow. Just wow.

After we win the Natty, and Paris completes an HOF 15 year career in the NFL, he can replace Ramzy as our Writer Laureate.

Go Paris! Beat UGA!

Go Bucks!
