Good to see the SEC had chicken shit Saturday and was paying players dating back to the 50s…some things never change

HS
Steel City Buckeye's picture

With an Uncle that started for OSU in the 70’s I can tell you for a fact OSU has been paying players since at least his time.  This was never an isolated SEC issue.

HS
fear_the_nut70's picture

This is just common sense.  Otherwise, top recruits would often gravitate to the programs that paid them.  Just the way it works.  OSU signs way too many 4 & 5 star guys to not suspect they too are playing the game.

HS

Auburn only won the ‘57 AP vote because they used a loophole and signed every 10 watt am station in Alabama up for a vote in the AP poll. The AP changed its membership criteria because of this. Leave it to the SEC to circumvent the rules to claim a NC.

HS

He should give us the '96 and '98 titles then to replace the '54 and '57 titles.

Honestly, I can see saying the 57 title was a bit shaky, we had a loss and we are rated 3rd in SRS for that season, according to College Football Reference, but 1954, come now!  We were undefeated, had a points for of 249 to a points against of 75, defeated 6 ranked teams out of 10 games and have a 7 point higher SRS.

Unless you were THERE and WATCHED those other teams, there is not historical justification based on published facts to say Ohio State was not the best team that year.

Using the the beginning of Oklahoma's historic winning streak as justification is ridiculous even in a clownish/cllickbait article.

I don't know who Bill Connelly is from espn but who gave him the authority to change football history? Sounds like a slow news day effort to me. I was born in 1957 so I hereby appoint OSU champions. I remember that season!

-Offense: breaking in a new QB (Days hand picked preseason among 3 very talented QBs) should continue right where we left off, WR room best in country and Evan Pryor will be healthy.

-Defense: 6 Four Star DBs coming in and our staff has time to work with the remaining defense. Bulk of line returns, Steele and Eich’s status are the ? on D.

I appreciate that Noah Ruggles takes responsibility for the missed kick. But a 50 yard kick is no gimme. Most of his kicks during his tenure were 45 yards and less and OSU did him no favors in the series leading up to his kick to get him closer.

But I don't think that many Buckeye fans are blaming Noah Ruggles for the loss. It was a bad kick. But if a college basketball team scores 85 points and loses by one point because a player misses a shot from half court at the buzzer, the missed heave is not the cause of the loss. You shouldn't let the other team score 86. Likewise, when OSU scores 41 points, it should not have to rely on a last second long kick to win the game. Something else went badly wrong, and in this case it was Jim Knowles defense.

HS
OH-IO's picture

FIRE Jim "Big Play" Knowles.

OH-IO Goodbye Columbus.

HS
BucksHave7's picture

Honestly I hear your personal pain, but I’m pretty sure Knowles gets AT LEAST another full year and he did have the 14th beat D nationally.   This year is a big year for Knowles.

HS
hitlikemikedoss's picture

I think Knowles is slowly learning that he isn’t coordinating defense in the big 12 anymore. Where you can role the dice and get away with it. He’s in the BIG pond now where offense and QBs and opposing OCs will make you pay for being risky. I think he is learning when those risks CAN be taken and where they CANNOT. Game management is different when you are at a blue blood who expects to play for conference and national championships every year. This isn’t the BS big 12 with high school game plans and offenses. I think he is a good coach and teacher and he needs to evaluate and evolve his scheme and play calling to match the fact that he will be facing the best of the best of the country each year and the expectations this program has is that we WILL beat those teams. As much as I love the offense the old adage proves true: defense wins championships.

OSU ALUM

HS
BucksHave7's picture

Im just really curious if at start of 4Q to know if Ryan Day said at all to Jim Knowles, "dont give up any big plays, keep it in Prevent Defense Mode".

HS
hitlikemikedoss's picture

I don’t know obviously but I doubt it. I think Evil Coach Day was busy game planning for the next possession. I LOVE Evil Coach Day showing emotion on the side line. The team fed off of that. I think Day wants a DC that runs that side of the ball and he gives them the rope to do so. Do I think he needs to step in sometimes with CEO type observations/game circumstances/management reminders; yes.

I guess it's possible Day AND Knowles were scheming to make sure OSU had the last possession, which they did and UGA can't bleed out the clock. Once again, no faith in the D getting a clutch stop.

I don't think you have watched a lot of B12 football.  Scores are often 48-45.  No one is getting "away" with anything on the defensive side of the ball.  Quite the opposite.

You are entitled to you own opinion, not your own facts.

HS
BuckeyeDevil's picture

I would suggest that our ranking was inflated by performances against less than stellar teams. Yes we turned PSU over and JT has a monster game but they racked up 430 yards of offense and moved the bal with ease at times while putting up 31 points on us. Maryland had 405 yards and 30 points and UM had 530 yards and 45 points. Anyone with a pulse offensively was successful and UGA proved that all too clearly.

HS
admiralpb's picture

How did Michigan, Georgia, and TCU do? Lol.

HS
fear_the_nut70's picture

All contenders were inflated by inferior opponents.  That is how it works.  TTUN didn't play a decent team outside of us and PSU.  But you are correct, there were red flags during the season, and the chickens came home to roost the last two games.

Being  kicker is much like being a Cb in that you have to have a short memory. Kickers do miss, even the NFLs best have missed. I wish we could have gotten closer but it does happen. Ruggles has been consistent but sadly at the moment we all wanted, over stepped and screwed up. Hope he gets a shot in the NFL.

HS

I listened to a podcast on meteorology the other day and funny enough, he used kickers as his analogy for explaining why the general public has such a bad opinion of his industry. In addition to our general misunderstanding of what certain weather metrics mean, just like people remembering missed fg’s instead of many many more makes, we just the same remember the one time we went out without an umbrella when it was needed.

HS
allinosu's picture

After Day ran it on first down my wife turned to me and said "Oh God, he's going to put it on the kicker". She feels for kickers because they either get legendary status or death threats in those situations. She reminds me of mothers in the stands in little league baseball with 2 outs in the 9th and their kid on deck hoping the kid at the plate doesn't walk.

HS
bull1214's picture

Here’s my only only only issue with the run play being called. If day runs it there he needed to be committed to running it again the next play. Anyone that’s watched days playcalling tendencies knows that if the run hits for 4-6 yds the next play could be anything- advantage offense BUT if the run olay comes up short of that the next play will 99.9% if the time be a pass- advantage defense. So either start off passing or commit to the run if you think it’s there and he obviously did.

^^^this...I am around a lot of Buckeye fans on a daily basis, and to a person no one has blamed Ruggles. The most common complaints I hear are giving up 18 points in the 4th quarter, and not running the ball to gain 5-6 more yards to make the FG attempt more manageable.

Noah Ruggles just chose the absolute wrong moment to choke, flat out. That said, it happens, it's part of the game, I watched the replay of that kick at least a dozen times looking for something in the snap, the hold, the approach, anything... It was all where it was supposed to be as far as what I could tell, the miss was on Ruggles... But again, that's part of the game, he missed the kick and as bad as we all felt as fans he had to have felt dozens and dozens and hundreds and thousands of times worse.

Respect to Noah and his time in Columbus. Didn't end how any of us wanted, but that's football. In retrospect, that kick never should've been the deciding factor in that game.

HS
vball10set's picture

Noah Ruggles just chose the absolute wrong moment to choke, flat out.

This right here is as an obtuse a statement as I've seen...first of all, he didn't "choose" anything, and he didn't "choke"--he simply missed a 50 yard field goal. He more than likely over compensated his leg torque because he knew he had to keep it low and drive it, just like a golfer trying to drive a 300 yard par 4, down by a stroke, on the last hole of a playoff.

Please stop with the "choke" bullshit--if anyone pissed down their legs, it was our defense...period.

Faster, tougher, and more violent...

HS
RunEddieRun1983's picture

Like I said, should've never been the deciding factor in the game, but if you're the kicker, the snap is clean, the hold is clean, and the ball comes off your foot rotating sideways... I think even Noah Ruggles and his mom, in their most honest of moments would realize and own that moment and that miss was on him.

He choked, and it might hurt someone's feelings, if so, okay, reality sucks sometimes. He missed the most important kick of his Ohio State career.

The Excellence of Execution, the Best there is, the Best there was, the Best there ever will be!

HS
bull1214's picture

As opposed to all of them kickers that never missed? Who is on that list exactly?

HS
RunEddieRun1983's picture

I'm not sure I denoted a phrase written in English here. Are you asking me if any of "them kickers" ever missed a field goal before? And to which field goal kickers would you be referring?

The Excellence of Execution, the Best there is, the Best there was, the Best there ever will be!

HS
bull1214's picture

You can’t complain about imperfect unless you can compare it to something or someone that is perfect. No kicker hits them all. The greatest kicker of all time has many regrettable misses. Take the high road

HS
BuckeyeGoneNuts's picture

To be very clear, Ruggles missed the kick, but he did not "choke".  Not at all.  If he missed a chip shot kick or a kick that any competent kicker in CFB would make a high percentage of the time, then you could reasonably say he "choked".  But he did not.   A 50 yard kick is not a gimme, even under the best of circumstances that's a 50-50 proposition.  Missing an easy one = choke.  Missing a very difficult 50 yard kick is just a miss.

HS
CincyBuck's picture

just like a golfer trying to drive a 300 yard par 4, down by a stroke, on the last hole of a playoff.

And completely slicing it in the water.  I'm not blaming Ruggles for the loss -- I blame the defense and refs.  But that said, it was straight-up a very bad kick.

HS
Buckeye Chuck's picture

Bottom line, the kick wasn't close. If it had drifted a touch wide or been on line but come up a yard short, that kind of thing happens. But if you saw someone air-ball a free throw with your team down by a point with a second left, you wouldn't go, "Hey, sometimes you miss free throws," you'd think the guy might have been feeling a little pressure.  It's weird to me that there's been this giant push to shame people into not bringing it up.

Besides, criticism of Ohio State football players on this site is not unheard of -- I couldn't tell you how many times I've read people grumbling about the way CJ Stroud looks standing on the sidelines, let alone his play on the field. So it seems like the effort over the last few days to police the discussion around the way the game ended is a little hypocritical.

HS
Gratefulbuck's picture

What if it was a free throw from half court?

HS
OfficerRabbit's picture

Exactly the point (no pun intended) I was going to make Grateful. Ruggles didn't miss a free throw.. a point after kick is akin to a free throw. Ruggles airballed a half court shot. That FG attempt was always going to be difficult to make, yet some on here post like a 50 yard kick should be automatic. I don't get it.

HS
Gratefulbuck's picture

I mean, a lot of players wouldn’t even be able to reach the basket, not without jumping. They might even try the ole underhand shot ala Rick Barry.

HS

What I don’t get is why the offense didn’t get the ball to the other hash mark for our kicker. Right footed kickers usually have the ball fade/slightly hook from right to left. Don’t know if it would have made a difference but just a question I had about it.

from 24/7 All-American Bowl Top Performers...

Malik Hartford - SAF - Ohio State

Soon to be taking his talents to Columbus on Saturdays, Malik Hartford turned some heads with his combination of length and smooth athleticism during the team periods of Tuesday’s practice sessions. Measuring in at 6-foot ½ and 166-pounds, the Buckeyes signee will most definitely need to add some bulk to his frame once he arrives on campus in Columbus but it’s hard to not to get excited about what type of safety prospect Hartford can develop into over the next three to four years after seeing him live in San Antonio. A smooth mover with silky hips, Hartford’s man-to-man ability in addition to his range playing the deep part of the field gives the Buckeyes a nice developmental piece on the backend of their defense that should help remedy limiting explosive plays in the passing game.

Carnell Tate - WR - Ohio State

One of the newest members of Zone-6, Ohio State signee Carnell Tate continued to prove that he's one of the nation’s top receiver prospects throughout Tuesday’s practice sessions in San Antonio. Measuring at 6-foot ½ and 179-pounds, Tate is arguably the smoothest receiver prospect in attendance at the All-American Bowl. With excellent short area separation ability off the line of scrimmage and at the top of the route, Tate’s wide catch radius and sticky 10 ½ inch hands make him a difficult cover for even the most talented and prototypical defensive backs. Shaking loose a handful of times on Tuesday, the only potential “knock” in Tate’s game at this point of his development is that he’ll need to add some weight and increase his play strength as he readies himself for the next level. That being said, don’t be surprised if Tate is stealing headlines in Columbus in year one of his collegiate career.

You can't blame Ruggles when the defense folded in the second half.  Had the Buckeyes called 3 better plays prior to the field goal attempt maybe they could have picked up another 15 yards.  That was a tough spot to put him in and the moment unfortunately got the better of him.  From 35 yards, he most likely drills it and we are all getting pumped for this upcoming weekend.

I don't know how it went down but usually the ST Coordinator lets the head coach know where his guys are good from. That's basically the entire part of warm ups for kickers. Ruggles was NEVER known as a big leg guy and it was clear based on how Day called his last three plays. If Hayden breaks that run, Ruggles wins the game, and then they passed two times after, right? So I wonder if Day was trying to get into a more comfortable range for Ruggles, failed, and then had to march him out where they were.

Ruggles wasn't put in the best position to kick. Hitting a 50 yard field goal is not easy, especially when that really isn't your game. He tried to crush it and it cost him accuracy. If the Buckeyes got 6-8 more yards on that drive, I'm guessing OSU would be in the title game.

Anyone taking shots at Ruggles should just hang it up as a fan. Its his job to make kicks but he's last in line for his share of the blame. I'm hanging a lot of this on the guy who coaches the ST unit that botched two huge fake punts in consecutive games, then the defense who created a situation where your QB had to lead your team back and your kicker had to blast a kick to win, then the offense for the way they executed the last 3 plays, then whatever is left over I'll hand to Ruggles.

Thanks for everything Noah

This is interesting -- Sugar Bowl vs Alabama, it's 4th and 2 and we're leading by 14.  Luke Fickell tries to call a time out before the play and despite signaling it before the snap, wasn't granted the timeout.  Result is a TD for Alabama.  Flip the scenario to this year and a successful conversion is negated because of a timeout that was granted after the snap.  Fortunately, our defense holds the lead against Alabama, but that wasn't the case for us this year.

This would be potentially upsetting but for now pretty consistent accounts that OAU had 12 guys on the field and it wouldn’t of counted anyway unless they missed that penalty.

The refs would have called the penalty at the snap for illegal substitution if they were going to call it.  They didn't.  But after the snap they called a timeout.

Mrs. Ruggles: Please give Noah a huge hug and explain to him that it was NOT his fault on that kick in the Peach Bowl. He was put in a pretty bad situation by our coaches' play calling in those last 28 seconds of the game. OSU had the ball at Georgia's 31 yard line with two timeouts remaining and 1st and 10.......1st play a run up the middle of all things that got stuffed for no gain, and two more incomplete passes.

BOTTOMLINE: OSU did not advance the ball AT ALL from the 31. Had they made another 5-9 yards forward, Noah's kick would have been much easier for him. OSU lost that game because of Ryan Day's puckered up play calling in the last 28 seconds of the game. I know many of the homers here will say many plays in the game, blah blah blah, but C.J. Stroud's outstanding 25 yard keeper down to Georgia's 31 gave OSU a legitimate chance to win the game, and then bone-headism took over.

I've never seen a team that can pull defeat from victory more than OSU coaches.

OSU kids don't deserve that........at all...............
