tOSU always draws a big crowd, so as long as we are relevant, we will most likely be in the conversation year in and year out just for that reason...we travel well, a shit ton of people tune in if not at the game, largest, most bad ass fan base on the face of the planet!
We had this debate at work about three years ago. Its kind of ironic. I am of the mind-set, you dont need an elite QB/gun slinger to win a national championship....just a great game manager that doesnt make mistakes and scores when your defense gets a turn-over. And of course a solid defense because defense wins championships.
We had this debate at work about three years ago. Its kind of ironic. I am of the mind-set, you dont need an elite QB/gun slinger to win a national championship....just a great game manager…And of course a solid defense because defense wins championships.
Craig Krenzel agrees.
As you get older, three things happen: The first is your memory goes, and I can't remember the other two.
You need someone who falls in the great game manager - elite QB range PLUS they have to be special in the big moments.
You look at the past 10 years or so In the biggest moments Bennett, Burrow, Mac Jones, Hurts, Lawrence, Winston even our own Cardale Jones.. have been special....
Bama could have beaten OSU with Mac Jones sitting on the bench. Our defense was horrendous that year. They could have literally given the ball to Najee Harris all game and still won. The game would have been much closer of course.
When telling the truth becomes a revolutionary concept, it’s wise to join the revolution
He still had to make plays to get there though. In the biggest moments that year he made plays. Against ranked opponents 27 TDs to 3 INTs. 9 TDs no interceptions in their two playoff games.
And while I agree our defense was garbage, that Bama game was probably the worst game of Fields career. He couldn't hit anything.. 70% passer that year, and barely completed 50% against Bama..
Can make the same case the year before.. Fields was too good, but two brutal turnovers against Clemson ( yeah Olave ran the wrong route) but still in the biggest moments Fields was just great, not special..
Bryce Young never won. Two interceptions against Georgia including a pick 6 that sealed the game.. and despite all the highlight reels and times he was really great, too often in the biggest moments, he wasn't special.
You can make a similar case with CJ.... he was absolutely fantastic for 99% of that game and put the team on his back.. but that last 3 plays, where we needed him to be special, he wasn't..
Let’s be fair to Fields…he wasn’t healthy at all in that Bama game (or in the Clemson game in 19 as well). I do think those games have affected how Day runs the offense during the season. He knows he’s got to have his QB as close to 100% as possible in the playoff.
True. Three great quarterbacks. But an even better one was born just down the road, was here for a few years, and had to leave to play somewhere else. He won that Natty we all expect every tear and a Heisman too.
Only one team wins it each year, and unfortunately, this is the era of perhaps the greatest college football coach of all time. As you know, a great quarterback does not make a championship team alone. Hell, not that long ago, Bama was doing it with solid but unspectacular QB's (strong D, running game). Day's Buckeyes' will go as far as his defense takes him (and now, that is measured in counting number of stops, not shut down D).
You are entitled to you own opinion, not your own facts.
the Peach Bowl's viewership took quite a hit toward midnight as those without vested interest turned their televisions to channels broadcasting the ball drop and celebrating the New Year in the Eastern time zone.
I was watching in the bar, and someone thought it was time to turn it to NYE broadcast here in the StL. There were many watching without a rooting interest, but they had a betting interest. When the channel was turned, we chirped a little, politely and they turned it back. The men I was talking too bet the wrong way on Michigan and TCU. I feel bad for them that the king booger picker came through in the clutch.
I'll never forget being in Sun Devil stadium for that game. Talk about Buckeye Nation showing up. The post game party in Tempe didn't suck either.
"You ever hear of the saying "you run into an asshole in the morning, you ran into an asshole; you run into assholes all day, you're the asshole." - Raylan Givens
I was at the OSU/Miami game and at the corner end zone where the flag was thrown. Saw Miami run to the field and then back to sidelines when the flag was thrown. That team had studs on defense.
The ONLY reason we don't have more natty's despite the great QB play is defense. Defense. Defense. Defense. We might be in the middle of a dynasty if we had defense. I don't know how it's gotten so bad over the last several years, but it's bad. Real bad. I'd even risk saying that our D-line has "underperformed" ever since Chase Young left. JTT HAS been brilliant at times, but man, not the game wrecker we're used to having. Yet. Perhaps the LB corp wound up being the most "dominant" part of the defense. And maybe I'm overlooking some mostly decent play at safety and corner. Is it possible to have a "mostly decent" defense this season, but one that didn't trust itself enough to trust their instinct when it came to preventing big plays? Who knows. I think the most likely culprit is a basic lack of talent. We've got converted offensive players playing defense, FFS. At THE Ohio State University. The book has been written in the 2022 edition of the Buckeye Football team and I think it's fair to say that the offense was very good but injury plagued and came up short in the big games, and the defense was good but could not prevent being gashed regularly. Never seen anything like it. Being "elite" and "terrible" all at once. here's to 2023!
The ONLY reason we don't have more natty's despite the great QB play is defense. Defense. Defense. Defense. We might be in the middle of a dynasty if we had defense
You have a point but here's what the top 4 teams in the country gave up that day, OSU-42, Georgia-41, Michigan-52 and TCU 45. Offenses rule during this age.
I think the issue with defense this year, outside of player development and learning a new scheme, is Jim Knowles habit of taking unnecessary risks at crucial moments.
Point #1 - Our defense had been shutting Michigan down. We had them at 3rd and long, a conservative call likely prevents the first down and forces a punt, especially given the play call. We jailbreak blitz, give up the TD on a missed tackle with no help, and momentum is instantly flipped. More of the same later in the game and when we stopped doing that, our defense began to wear down which Michigan's running game is prone to do to any team.
Point #2 - 4th quarter UGA, we needed, again, to play conservatively, force UGA to use the clock. Instead our aggressive play calls didn't get home and gave up big plays allowing UGA back into the game, ultimately winning it. We had shut them down in the 3rd quarter and most of the 1st half, so it was entirely schematic when the wheels came off in the 4th (although MHj being out resulting in shorter offensive drives and less defensive downtime certainly didn't help)

Last two head coaches were offensive minded guys. That means logically speaking, the d is going to be the weak link. For Meyer, his probably was loyalty to his people to a fault (e.g. Bill Davis). For Day, his problem is that he is green as a HC, and everything, including hiring, is an adventure for him. Coombs was just the wrong call (but Hafley appeared to be a great call). Turnover has hit both of them, which is inevitable when you are successful. This results in having to continuously make the correct call, something that I imagine isn't easy for offensive minded guys. I also think when your HC has an offensive background, it is only natural that expertise will be recruiting and developing on that side of the ball. That means that you leave recruiting in the hands of your assistants to some degree (because even when brought in to close, recruits are probably thinking, ok, I hear you, but you are an offensive guy. What does that do for me?). For offensive minded HC's, it all comes down to nailing the hire on the defensive side, and they are trying to do that without personal knowledge of that side of the ball. All of this is against a backdrop of there is one trophy to fight over, and this is clearly the era of Nick Satan.
You are entitled to you own opinion, not your own facts.
What's funny now about watching all of his crazy NFL highlights is that he really didn't make that many WOW plays with his feet in college. Of course, he ran the ball well, but he wasn't breaking five tackles, escaping the pocket and running for 60-yard touchdowns as he has done a few times this year in the NFL. He's continuing to evolve and will be very fun to watch for years to come.
The QB run is amazing. I think OSU has figured out the formula for QB success - start with a tallented prospect, add Ryan Days brand if development and combine that with elite WR play. This sounds spoiled but i think the QB play will be excellent afain next year
Most viewers since year one, which would be the Ohio State vs Alabama game; lot's of eyeballs on TOSU, nothing new.
Without winners there wouldn't be any gosh darn civilization. We make no apologies for winning or for aiming our entire program toward that goal. - Woody Hayes
Maybe then the average life expectancy will actually be over 100, with some pushing to be 150-200 years old. If I'm around then, I'll make sure to raise a glass to you if this prediction comes true.
All I know is that I was proud of this team even with the loss. They proved they were not only better than expected but really were the bad draw for Georgia. There is no shame at all losing by 1 point to the defending national champs while dominating for most of the game. Defense does need to improve further and a lot of questions for next season but it will be fun to watch!
Does defence wins championships? IMO defenses should be judged by their ability to prevent the offense from scoring. It is fair to say that offense and defense play similar roles in determining winning success, but it seems to me that good solid balanced football teams always win championships and quarterback play is critical to the final outcome.
According to Sports Media Watch (SMW), the Peach Bowl's viewership took quite a hit toward midnight as those without vested interest turned their televisions to channels broadcasting the ball drop and celebrating the New Year in the Eastern time zone.
College Football powers that be: Please don't have such an important game on NYE ever again. Also, could we end it with the freaking 4 hour games? There is only 60 min of timed action. There is no need to have TRIPLE that as down time....and that is not even counting huddles/ball resets/signals being called while the clock is running.
The Canes sent the game to overtime with a last-play field goal, seemingly won in the first OT before a controversial pass interference flag and lost to the Buckeyes in the second OT period.
Did a Miami fan write this? This is about the most dishonest way you could characterize this game.
Gamble made the catch, was in bounds, and was interfered with. The officials got everything wrong on that play and it directly led to Miami even being able to force overtime in the first place (the first down either from the catch or a penalty allows us to kneel out the clock in regulation). In OT, it was also obvious PI and the call is only controversial if you bet on the outcome of the game. We still had to score a TD after it anyway, which we promptly did, not to mention winning in 2OT with a huge defensive stand.
But it seems all anyone ever wants to focus on is the PI in OT as if that was the only crucial moment (and that it somehow was wrong). It wasn't, and it wasn't.

It seems like they should want the CFP on broadcast TV. It would easily get over 50 million or much more. It would consistently be the 2nd most watch program of the year.
Any time you give a man something he doesn't earn, you cheapen him. Our kids earn what they get, and that includes respect - Woody Hayes
There are three impacts that a long scoring play has, especially when the Bucks give it up to a team that is trailing. (1) Points go on the board (obviously). (2) The opponent expends next to no effort and energy in getting those points. (3) Momentum, which is such a big part of CFB, swings to the other side at the flip of a switch. The defensive game plan must be built and executed with a better sense of risk/reward as applied to critical situations. Now, about special teams which have been in position to make big plays but did not. . . Go Bucks!!
Whoever Day chooses as our next QB, he needs to have the heart of an assassin.
Stroud has great passing skills, and may have great leadership skills. However, the Peach Bowl was the first time that I saw him try to "will his team to victory." Skill players around him kept getting hurt (like Harrison Jr. and Williams). But CJ did everything that he could to win the game.
I just didn't get the feeling that was the case in previous games, especially the 2022 game against Michigan. I wish him well. He was a very good QB for Ohio State. Hopefully he learned something in the Peach Bowl that helps him succeed at the next level. And I hope that our next QB starts his first game with an assassin mindset.
