Being the competitor that he is, Damar Hamlin's first concern after regaining consciousness was "Who won the game?" (asked in writing). The doctors responded, "You did. You won the game of life." Such a wonderful reply.

These RBs will help big time w a new Ryan Day Handpicked QB.  Our offense next year should be on par with this seasons. Knowles defenses will only get better as his green staff has more time.

See you in the 2023 CFP.

I'm expecting a little drop off on offense with more running and less passing while a better defense which equals out to last year. Maybe better.

HS
AToledoBuck's picture

A better defense (and special teams...we need to look at that this off-season), has a bigger impact on the offense than any one player coming back. Defense got better in every statistical category in one off-season...I expect that trend to continue as we start to get Knowles' guys in the system.

My brother does sports talk radio and we spoke yesterday. Went through the roster -  and the offense  is loaded loaded loaded. Defense should should improve - big question is why gamble with a two score lead when the game clock is your friend ?  Philosophy might need a tweak.  In any event, trajectory is very positive in ‘23 !

HS

Feeling positive as well. I was totally mashed after TTUN debacle but I surprisingly less so after UGA. The future looks bright for our Buckeyes, we should be a machine once again. Hopefully, we will be right in the mix with the tweaks you suggest. Go Bucks!

Two losses in one week to the #1 teams in their respective sports (Georgia football, Purdue basketball), when both games were ours to win...it really sucks.

btw, a 6th year player making a fundamental mistake like Sueing did is unacceptable...Holtmann fell on the sword for him, but that's bullshit--this falls ALL on Sueing...period.

HS

Sueing mistake was certainly terrible (you expect better from him), but perhaps have a better plan for press break.  And certainly a better sideline play at end of game.  Give credit to Purdue Freshmen knocked down a huge 3.  That play is why Matt Painter is 2 wins short of 400 wins in B1G.

Okay, I'll give you that--after further review, Thornton really should have went to the ball...he either catches the pass, or at the very least gets fouled while going after it.

Someone previously mentioned Evan Pryor as a possible slot receiver. With a full RB room, Pryor and Hayden might want to explore that option. Double duty as slot receiver/running back. That kind of talent shouldn't be on the sidelines. It wouldn't hurt their future NFL draft stock either. I don't want to see either of them hit the portal. Get them in the games.

HS
JohnnyKozmo's picture

We've got plenty of WRs.  I think the better option is to get 2 RBs on the field in some packages.  Flex one (Pryor) out to get a mismatch on a LB.  UGA manages to keep 3 or 4 RBs happy with touches.  No reason Ohio State can't do the same.  Pryor and Henderson both came not wanting to be a bell cow type back.

You're too stupid to have a good time. -Dalton

HS
bull1214's picture

Completely agree. The thing is that Georgia will bring in a package for a series or 2 like that, maybe more if it’s working well. Fans have to be satisfied with that limited use. We have too many that worry about who is “RB1” and why isn’t such and such getting more snaps after having a good game or another guy has an off game, etc. our fanbase ego can’t handle a by committee approach yet.

HS
CreekBuck's picture

We have too many that worry about who is “RB1”

I think the concern is more about keeping players in the program, to keep depth.  At least that's how I feel about it.  Especially this year with all the injuries.  Props to Alford for getting dudes to play.  I wish Hartline would have got more WR in the rotation, we see what fresh legs look like at the Peach Bowl.   I get going with your horses but in this offense there's more than enough snaps to get more WRs on the field in meaningful snaps. Hell even in mop up duty, throw the ball more to get them young dudes experience.

Muck Fichigan

HS
bull1214's picture

I agree. From game one there should be snaps for young ones to get some experience. After this year if they didn’t learn that then they probably never will. Injuries effected us exponentially.

I'm torn about the level of violence in the sport of football. When I was younger I loved that massive hit, that slobber knocker, that contact that made everyone watching say "ooooo" as a collective response. But as I've aged I care more about the finesse aspect of the game. I'd rather see that ankle breaking cut by the RB than the rib busting hit by the LB.
And yet in hockey one of my favorite things is a good fight.
Like I said, I'm conflicted.

To err is human. Really sucking requires having yellow stripes on your helmet.

HS
allinosu's picture

I think kids should play flag football until HS mostly because of unqualified fathers coaching. I coached it for years and it used to drive me crazy to see some of the ridiculous things these fathers put them through. The time for saying 'walk it off" is over. They've made strides in training, equipment and fields since my day which puts a lot more speed on the field and since force is ruled by speed there is more explosion at impact. Maybe it's time to go back to grass fields and shoes with less grip (who knows). The trouble with eliminating football is it would have to trickle down to gymnastics(along with other Olympic sports), rodeo, skate boarding (snow boarding etc), boxing and even soccer. I had a serious debate with my brother in law over my nephew having his first concussion and serious knee injury at 12 racing mini cycles. Just last week I read where youngsters are rock climbing and flying planes solo around the world. I don't see how there could be a way of making a lot of things completely safe.

Big kudos to Denny Kellington, a true professional.  Many a tragic circumstance is a result of poor training or reaction, even when there is a plan. Speaking again about extra running backs, we could use the old Pro Set (2 back set, side by side) or the venerable 1970's wishbone offense mixed in. Mobile option QB (Devin Brown) could adapt to this formation. Modern defenses don't see this anymore and it would provide a nice surprise that might confuse them. What's old could be new again. WTH, give it a try.

It is sad not to have kids to root for for 4 years but it's a news age. I think the NBA suffers because of it. The only reason I was a Celtic fan when I was young was because of the years of Havlicek. I don't follow them there now.

HS
Lighteyes's picture

For what it's worth, most NBA players are with their initial team for 7-8 years (if the team wants them) due to the way the rookie contract/first extension work. To use the Celtics as an example, their star duo of Tatum/Brown have been with the Celtics since 2016 and 2017 respectively and are signed through 2024/2026 respectively, so that duo is going to have the better part of a decade together.

It's when you get to guys who've been in the league over a decade that they start getting the power to threaten to leave in free agency and then start bouncing around.

HS
allinosu's picture

I don't get your first point since it was getting connected to college players so much one would follow them into the NBA when there was no interest in that team before (like following hondo) so being with a NBA team 7-8 years means nothing to that point.

HS
Lighteyes's picture

I might have misinterpreted your post. I thought your point was the NBA suffers because of how much player movement there is in the NBA and stars forcing their way out of town - which is an issue that gets discussed all the time with regards to the NBA and is a real concern...but also a lot of the discussion focuses on late career guys while ignoring that you get a nice window early in their rookie contract plus first extension.

But yes, if you choose your NBA team only based on who you liked in college/who went to Ohio State (totally your right, though I do think that's probably much less common than "I grew up in Cleveland so I'm a Cavs fan" or "always loved the Hornets since I was a kid in the 90's" or whatever)? Then yeah, I can definitely see how not being able to ever establish a link with guys in college would affect your NBA fandom because few-if-any NBA-caliber guys would stick around long enough in Columbus long enough for you to really get attached.

The sky in the planet I live in is Scarlet and Gray, but I'm hoping to get a BOOM that Stroud and JSN are coming back for one more season. NIL can get close to matching the numbers both would get in their rookie contracts for next season. Unfinished bitness. I know, I know. It ain't gonna happen, but imagine for a second what it must feel like to know that you're CJ Stroud and heading to the hapless Indianapolis Colts to most assuredly be thrown to the wolves and sacked five times a game, OR come back to be the king of Ohio, win the Heisman, win a national championship, etc, AND make that bag via NIL. And as for JSN, I truly, TRULY hope his first round grade is indeed 100% rock solid accurate. A slip to even the 2nd round would be a total disaster. Whichever team is going to take a HUGE RISK that the JSN they draft will be the Rose Bowl version FROM LAST SEASON. The NIL millions are the same for him, and hopefully he'll be back too.

Round on the ends and "HI" in the middle. O-HI-O.

HS
JohnnyKozmo's picture

JSN won't make it out of the 1st round.  Mock drafts have him dropping, but someone in the 20-31 pick range is going to get a steal at worst.  Didn't he already say in his message about not playing in the playoff that he was leaving?

You're too stupid to have a good time. -Dalton

HS
OldTownBuckNut's picture

Yes, he did say he wasn't going to play in the playoff semi to "prepare for the draft." I don't know if that's all it takes to not be able to "reverse" the decision, and am under no illusion that he will, either. Just some hopeful thoughts. I'd love to know how that process goes, on a related note. Does some NFL team just reach out and say "hey look, we'll 100% draft you" or whatever? I just look at the NFL as it is constituted nowadays, and many of the stars come out of these "not-elite" schools like OSU (OSU being elite, obviously). It's never been more competitive when it comes to evaluating talent and then who actually makes it in the NFL. Maybe in the end it's one part hope and one part fear for JSN. Hope he comes back for my selfish desire for OSU to win, and fear that he's going to go into the draft and get dropped to later rounds. I guess that if he has a solid combine and can demonstrate he's 100% healthy, there's nothing to worry about. But lets say he either can't/won't do the combine (ala Jamison Williams, though was dominant before getting hurt in the same season preceding the 2022 draft), or he underperforms at the combine. Bad. Regardless, it will be almost completely unprecedented for a player to sit out an entire season (essentially) and be drafted in the 1st round.

Round on the ends and "HI" in the middle. O-HI-O.

I don't think NIL is coming anywhere near the 4-5 million per year CJ and JSN are likely to earn in the league.

For reference (Chris Olave's rookie contract is 19+M over four years; Garrett Wilson's is 20.5M over four years).

Nobody seems to know how much the NIL deals are worth, but I'm quite certain they are much less that the above NFL numbers.

I'm also pretty sure the IRS is going to know/find out how much the NIL deals are worth . . . and probably sooner than later!

Quick note on Harry Miller ... was in-stadium for the Peach Bowl.  While understandable given the circumstances, no-one in uniform stayed out on the field to sing Carmen Ohio with THE Band.  That is except one young man - none other than Mr. Harry Miller, #76.  Knowing his story, both me and my 14 year old son had goosebumps, and it oddly helped us both put things into proper perspective.

HARD BREAK ...

BTW: Concerned about the TEAM not staying to sing with the band ... Ryan Day needs to be aware and address it.  Could it be indicative of a deeper connection and unity that might have been missing with this year's team, despite all the talk of "brotherhood?"  Maybe we'll never know, but it crossed my mind in that moment.  More often than not, wins and losses aren't because of the Xs and Os.
