Nick Saban is so up his own rear end if he think Alabama is the 2nd best team in the nation.

Other than OSU, I think Alabama is the only team in the country that can hang with Georgia in a game that matters (i.e. Georgia focused and not looking past them).  If I had a vote, I'd have put Alabama fourth, behind Georgia, OSU, and Michigan.  Second is crazy talk.

Kirby Smart ranked tOSU 4th because TCU beat Michigan. Ohio State did not play Michigan well at all.

Transitive but logical. It was not a scoring v UGA contest but a Won/Loss contest.

Lord Hammercy

HS
BrutusB's picture

Yea I don't really see the outrage.  Since the CFP started the runner up has always been second.  Then if you're gonna rank the two other semifinal teams, Michigan beat us H2H.  Pretty straightforward in my book.

HS
BurningRiverBuckeye's picture

Agreed, but at the end of the day there's no way Kirby actually believes TCU is a better team than OSU.

HS
buckstoo's picture

That may be true that the runner up has always been second, but how the heck can you put someone second when they got their asses handed to them? They shouldn’t have been there anyway, and no I don’t like the ichigan would have been but no way tcu should be ranked second by anyone especially by Kirby Stupid. That’s my 2 cents!

HS
BrutusB's picture

Yea but then who do you put there instead? Michigan who lost to TCU? OSU who lost to Michigan? TCU is pretty much the only option.

HS
OSU OK's picture

I would have ranked TCU 6th, maybe even 7th, behind Penn State.  If they played Penn State on a neutral field, I'd like PSU's chances  -they have much higher blue-chip ratio, afterall.  Is TCU really any better than Utah?  The PAC 12 was much better than either the ACC or the Big 12 this season.  That isn't saying much, but it's something.

Just because they just barely beat Michigan without their best offensive player, in a game where Michigan played the worst game they could possibly have played (and got jobbed on probably the worst call of the year), why are we respecting them so much?  They did just give up 65 points on Monday, and were utterly uncompetitive for 3-1/2 quarters.  Would anybody else in the top ten give up 65 points to anybody?

Had the CFP committee used theoretical point spreads for matchups between Alabama and the three teams who were a lock to make the playoff (Georgia, Michigan and TCU), Nick Saban believes the Crimson Tide would have earned the No. 4 seed in the four-team tournament.

I have to wonder at times if they just throw darts. I know the coaches do not actually fill these out but probably some unpaid intern or something but some of these are odd. Smart in particular. James Franklin!   LOL    I cant wait to watch Drew Allar regress over the next 3 years.

HS

Agreed. I don't find myself super impressed with Allar to begin with but I don't see a way in which Franklin actually elevates his qb. He seems better at getting the scrappy small qb to play maybe above his talent level at times but turtle in the big games like his coach.

HS

There is just no world where TCU is better than us. We beat Michigan 8 times out of 10. We should have beat Georgia. Dino Babers has CTE.

Hopefully, this is Ryan's wake-up call to get out of his head because we will always be the hunters when he is calling loose and aggressive.

HS

TCU with the now 94th best Defense and 27th best Offense in the country?

HS

Using this logic we might just as well not even play the game and use Saban logic to determine champions by Vegas point spreads.

Maybe you're right we beat TTUN 8 of 10 (I don't agree) but the last two times we played them they beat us by a large margin. Everyone complaining about TCU being ahead of us also forgets we lost two in a row. We don't get to jump from 5 to 2 by losing consecutive games lmao.

The only ranking that matters is #1.  #2-25 is like arranging deck chairs on the Titanic, they all went down with the ship when it was all said and done, and that is fine so long as Harbaugh, Swinney, and Saban are part of that group.

Monday's performance was the worst I've ever seen in a championship game.  They'd have gained more respect losing by a point on a last second TD to Michigan (I'm glad they didn't though).  That defeat made them look like a joke.

The main thing I learned from this is that the dude from Syracuse is on drugs and Nick Saban is delusional.. his team was nearly a five loss team and barely beat seven loss Texas A&M and five loss Texas.. to go along with their two losses... came down right to the end against Ole Miss also who ended up not being very good.

HS

Any vote placing us 2-4 can make sense depending on the justification used. It all doesn't matter. We played the #1 team in the country closer than anybody else, and everyone is going to remember that over the final rankings.

Ahmm, what? I recall the bucks winning the first half in ass kicking. The skunk weasels were averaging like less than 2 yards a carry. Osu win both line of scrimmages in first half. No doubt second half went awry for bucks but the way that played out was not an ass kicking. More like a 4th qtr fold with 9 mins to go.

HS
OSU OK's picture

With the benefit of some distance, it's clear to me that OSU and Ryan Day outcoached themselves in that game.  I think they are buying into the fans insane hype and hysteria that this one game every year is a life or death experience.  It's not.  Michigan cares about the game, but they don't let the "rivalry" affect their preparation and strategy.  They treat it as "business", not as personal.

Day decided that no matter what happened, they were not going to let a-hole Michigan push them around again this year - and they sold out the secondary (the weakest part of the team) in doing so.  TCU played their stupid Big 12 3-3-5, and dared Michigan to run on it.  Michigan did run on it (they went right down the field on the first drive, and they passed on it for most of the game), but it extended the drives long enough for Michigan to make just enough drive-killing mistakes to make the game competitive.

OSU played Michigan (like we were) tight for the second straight year, like they were terrified to lose, because, OMG! The Rivalry!!.  They gave up big plays and didn't score any themselves, and then collapsed in the 4th quarter.

This is just spinning a narrative.  Meyer treated it like life and death and never lost.  Difference is, TTUN's last two teams have actually been pretty good, hence the trip to the college playoffs.  All this bulletin board, days till game counters, media quotes, refusing to call them by their name is nice fodder for fans and the like.  When the whistle blows, the game, as always, is won in the trenches.  TTUN kept it close enough in the first then won the LOS by plenty in the second half.  All the rest is white noise...

You are entitled to you own opinion, not your own facts.

Yes, but they TTUN was ranked #3 in 2016 and #4 in 2018 when The Game was played. The Buckeyes kept them out of the playoffs.

IMO, with all players healthy and playing, OSU is without a doubt 1, and would've beat the dog out of the Dawgs. Hell, even a crippled OSU took them to the limit; hardest game they had all season.

HS
OSU OK's picture

Watching that OSU-Georgia game, and then that execution on Monday, I could not stop wondering "How in the hell did Ohio State lose so badly to Michigan?  At home?"  As I wrote above, I think the hype and emotion around the rivalry is doing OSU harm these days.  A loss is clearly more devastating to OSU's psyche than to Michigan's.  Maybe that is because they got used to losing and learned to deal with it?

Time to get emotions under control and let talent do it's job.  OSU's blue-chip ratio is 20 points higher than Michigan's, and not many of their starters would start for OSU, especially on offense.  That said, maybe Michigan, either because of scheme, coaching, or attitude, is just a really bad match-up for OSU, and there is nothing we can do about it until Harbaugh goes to the NFL?

These things happen in football. That would suck.

Class of 1988

HS
OldTownBuckNut's picture

The difference is that TTUN (and every other team on OSU’s schedule) has absolutely zero pressure. They’re all playing with house money. Nobody expects them to win. Now, apply that rule to every season in OSU’s history. No team in the country has the self imposed pressure OSU does. Nobody. Where is LSU, Alabama, Florida, Florida state, Nebraska, USC, Miami,  or any other “elite program” today?

Round on the ends and "HI" in the middle. O-HI-O.

Speaking of Syracuse...

OSU opened the 1988 season against visiting Syracuse for the first game of the Cooper era, a commanding 26-9 victory that included Brutus Buckeye juicing an orange on the sideline for the ABC camera and players carrying Cooper to midfield as the final seconds ticked off. Young me was overly confident and mighty surprised the next Saturday when we went to Pitt and got trounced 42-10 for the ESPN CFA Game of the Week. Good times.

Logic suggests that you rate teams at the end of the year based on how they are playing and how the would fare against the other competition. If all things are equal or relative then regardless of what happen a month ago how would those teams do now. With that said. 1- Georgia, 2- OSU, 3- Bama, 4-michigan. One could argue 2 and 3 could be switched. Regardless with a defense as horrid as the Buckeyes my theory/logic could be full of holes.

That's right, that's right, we bad

HS
Snake64's picture

Using logic we'd have to take into account the fact we lost 2 straight games. In what logical way do we lose 2 straight while other teams played an extra game and jump from 5th to 2nd? Apply this to any team not wearing Scarlet and Grey and watch your head explode.

We played a close game with Georgia but we lost. We played a tight game with TTUN for 3 quarters and lost by 3 tds. Those are both CFP teams and we beat neither.

1.  I can't believe this was how we choose the national champion once upon a time.  I can't believe this was even part of the equation in the BCS era.

2.  What exactly is the upside for any coach to participate in this at all?

3.  Why do we even still have a coaches' poll?

What is most amusing is clowns who claim to be objective in statements (such as 2, 3, 4) and why, then put Alabama ahead of Tennessee. The bullshit is easier to see through than you think.

#walkaway

HS
Snake64's picture

Bama did lose the H2H which is why TN was in front of them all season but then they both finished with 2 losses but TN second loss was by like 40 to a team that struggled to make a bowl game. Not that hard when the margin to beat Bama was a last second field goal at home.

HS
Bucktown 5.7x28's picture

All things equal and Bama had two losses as did Tennessee, and Tennessee beat Bama? No. Tennessee should have definitely finished ahead. If they don’t mean anything, why even have post season polls then ?

When telling the truth becomes a revolutionary concept, it’s wise to join the revolution

HS
Snake64's picture

Tennessee beat Bama by a last second field goal at home. Not a very large margin, the next thing to look at is result of the second loss / Bama lost in OT by 1 point AT LSU whereas Tenessee got blown out by 40+ to a bad team. It's the result and margin of the second loss that puts TN behind them. Had TN lost close to SC i'd agree keep them ahead but you simply can't get your ass blown out and expect to stay ahead. H2H matters first then you need to look deeper.

You realize the same people (you and others) getting upset that TN is behind Bama are also the same idiots crying that we should be #2 ahead of TCU and TTUN despite having lost H2H to TTUN and having 2 consecutive losses to end the season. Make the mental gymnastics make sense please.
