If Getting Angry Is What Makes Ohio State Dangerous, They Should Be the Most Terrifying Team On the Planet

Would 2022 Michigan not count as a game on the hurt-feelings chart, though?

It’s presence on the table hinges on the amount of anger this team internalizes and spews onto its next opponent.

This story is pretty accurate, I can't even remember the last time OSU lost two games in a row. I would have to venture it was in the interim coach season in 2011. I'll do some research and update this.

Couldn't get it updated in time. Yes 2012, before that 2011 of course. Urban lost 2 games in row once in 7 years, Tressel did it once (lost 3 in row) in 2004 in 10 years. Cooper 11 times had 2 or more consecutive losses in 13 seasons (7 of them involved Michigan and a bowl game). Earle had 6 in nine seasons, Woody had 6 in 28 years. Cooper lol. Oh goodness that was bad.

Urban never lost to UM and a bowl game. Earle only did it once (1980). How the heck did Cooper keep his job? I'm having flashbacks now!

Man, and that was the year I got divorced too. And cut my thumb off in a jointer at work. That game was so, so shitty. We’ll always have the Vonn Bell interception though.

HS

And the cutting off of the thumb was right after I moved out. My ex wife had a field day with that. And two weeks after that, I had to watch Tajh Boyd look like Sammy Baugh.  Watching that game felt like someone pouring lemon juice directly into my severed thumb.

Also, losing in heartbreaking fashion to Sparty and then turning around and annihilating TTUN in 2015 was another fine example of the Buckeyes using anger as fuel in the past decade.

Of course, different things motivate different people.  And I'm not sports psychologist, but instead of replays of things that did nothing but embarrass/humiliate/emasculate me and my team, I would put up the pantheon of greats looking just like me so that I, as a player, could envision myself in those same shoes and living that greatness.  But I wouldn't just post the highlight reels, it'd be the behind the scenes work that went into making the highlights.  That's what gets a team focused, imho.  The whole, we have a chip on our shoulder, Columbus vs. Everybody, disrespekt thing... that's Sparty's bag.  And you see how well that's worked out for them over the years.  There're reasons few respect that program.

HS
GuloGulo'99-'01's picture

Yeah, I think the cheap disrespekt thing suits East Landfill A & M, but IMO the article author is really speaking more for when people start thinking tOSU is down for the count, which is when they are most dangerous, which is very true (2018, 2001, 1994, 1987).  My worst fear is TTDS will have begun to understand the gravity of their loss on 11/26/22 and its implication on their legacy, and they'll start playing with full focus and become The Buckeyes again.  Or not.  Hard to say.

Keep your friends close, but your rivals, closer.

This. Something I learned early on when I was instructing that some people need their hand held, and others need their ass kicked, and it can vary day to day as much as person to person. If your switch is stuck in one position all the time, you will never get the most out of the people you are teaching/coaching.

HS
SalemBuckeye's picture

I don't think anger is the right mindset for the game. Maybe it's a place to start but that's it. Countless penalties, giving up big plays, missed big plays tells me relaxed focus is the key. When I think back to my best days as an athlete there was a sense of inner calm not rage.

SalemBuckeye

HS
vegaskid's picture

Agreed.  Some people need a kick in the ass, others need to calm down.  My read on this team is that they don't need to "care more" and "get angry".  I think they need to calm down and loosen up.  They weren't unprepared for UM, they cracked under the pressure.

HS
Cbuswriter's picture

This is where I'm at as well.

I view what happened as more of a wake up call than a call to arms. Anger doesn't typically work in situations like this UNLESS you make the requisite changes, too. And anger typically burns hot and fast, and isn't sustainable over a long period of time. There is a long time between that finale at Ohio Stadium and the game against Georgia.

Fix the defensive issues and hope the OL can give Stroud enough time to find receivers (and hope the receivers other than Harrison can consistently beat coverage or find holes in the defense).

Outscoring Georgia is the most likely way to an upset win.

HS

This article actually raises a really good question, when are the 18-23 year old men actually play mean spirited? I’m past those prime years but is it still a thing? I’ve never stepped foot in their facilities but it looks like a hotel I can’t afford to stay in. Maybe this type of environment bleeds out some of the “dawg” in people?

I watch a lot of college football. In retrospect, I haven’t seen a team this year that plays with an abundance of 95% controlled nastiness. Maybe it’s a generational thing like tight shirts and (vomit) skinny jeans?

It’s been pretty clear this program is soft. Michigan called us such and then proved it again. The don’t play with fire. Day looked like Cooper on the sidelines vs Michigan. Sorry but this game is a mismatch on many level. UGA will collapse the pocket like no other Dline and CJ will never run.  He’s less than 40% when pressured and (ranked lower than 130th of all qbs in D1). This game will be over at half. Disrespect will fuel the bowl game, not anger.  A lot of schmucks on the worldwide leader who don’t think the Buckeyes belong in the CFP or on the same field with the SEC champion. That kind of disrespect, when used in a controlled fashion, can put a team in the zone for an evening.

I actually agree with you, however, he has said more than once to Dan Patrick and Colin that being the head coach at OSU would be the "ultimate dream" and this was a few seasons into his HC job at Tennessee. though they have improved as a team significantly since he said that, and also that was during Day's first or second season so maybe he felt like sure Ill just say this because its never going to happen so who knows? Also, he "supposedly" didn't like recruiting or that's what folks say. That said, I think there is more to it than just he is an alumnus who coaches and the fan base would like to have, he made it pretty clear he would love to do that job.

Urban took a very angry team to 12-0. It kills me to say this, but this team lacks leadership, plays with no edge, and is soft. We all know it. It shows up every 3rd and 1, and now every time we play ttun. This team has shown me nothing to believe they have a chance to play with Georgia. Last year ttun kicked our asses, single-handedly kept us from the playoffs, questioned our manhood and called us soft. A year later we were so motivated that they did it all again, at our place. I don't know what's happening, but it needs to change.

Anger is good, but the resolve with what to do with it, is really the catalyst.

I'm sure there's plenty of prey that get angry, but often you just see them thump their feet.  Frustration is a form of anger.  And if any supposed leader on the field is soft serve?  All you'll see is pouting and temper tantrums, and effeminate reaction.

I'd rather see a bloodthirsting, action-hungry, battle-damaging sonsofbitches out there, that either nut-up, or shut-up.

I always think back to Craig Krenzel.  Smart with how he viewed adversity, and properly tempered his feelings, as he threw (and yes, ran) for yards, even if he wasn't the fastest guy out there.  That man KNEW folks were out to hurt him, and he played some of the most heroic football I have ever witnessed.  I don't recall him being ultra-hyped up, like some of today's roster, but I would take one of Craig Krenzel, who I know has that "killer instinct", and qualities of leadership and discipline, instead of any ten overhyped softies that folds under pressure and some innate act of selfish self-preservation for the next level, that if they continue to play timid - I promise you, will NOT pan out in the next level (Heck, it doesn't even muster at the college level!).

ANGER IS NOT ENOUGH.   EVENT + RESPONSE = OUTCOME

Anger doesn't make you better in the game, you can't sustain that.  Self Anger in practice makes you better in the game.  Having a true blue anger for mistakes is what makes you better.  Failing at one on ones and having a crap game plan should make you Angry.  ANGER is what the staff should have for putting a product on the field that just is not what it needs to be to succeed at the highest level.  Anger is what I have when watching teams with less talent do things to teams that looks like rocket science to us. Yea I know, all or nothing (like our offensive game plan) but that is the reality of this beast we watch on Saturdays.  ANGER is what Coach Day should have with himself for not hiring folks that will tell him something just won't work when you play folks with similar talent or if it does work don't change it. Everyone on staff should be angry for the product they have put out this season. Best recruiters, best facilities, best fans, Us against the world mentality, FAILING makes ANGER.  We should be the most terrifying team!, but we are not because at the end of the day our ANGER is not directed in the right direction.

I think that this Georgia matchup couldn't come at a better time for the program. Hype videos, fancy drip and social media posts are NOT going to beat Georgia. They are going to punch you in the mouth, grind you down the whole game and play fundamentally sound ball all night long. The only way to hang with that is to punch them right the f*** back and play grown man, sound in all areas, ball. This is the perfect test for Day and company. Put the ball down, buckle the chinstrap and play on a string. Let's go.

You either get the boys together and get it in line, or as Schlegs says, it's going to be BUMPY.
