Ohio State Center Luke Wypler Declares For 2023 NFL Draft

This one hurts.  I don't recall a single bad snap of his at any time over the last two years.

but some reason i recall every BAD SNAP to terrelle pryor, braxton, JT, dwayne, and justin

Because for too long we insisted on playing non-centers at center. “Best five on the field” was always a dumb philosophy.

HS
bull1214's picture

During studs time I constantly heard that the best thing he did was find and develop centers and guards. Tackles was his weak area. Here we are with his tackles about to get drafted highly and everyone questioning our recruiting ability on interior linemen. I just wish fans would make up their mind already lol

HS

Glad for him, not good for the o-line.

They’re gonna show him beating Jalen Carter’s ass on repeat and rightfully so. Wypler shined on the biggest stage. Great Buckeye. Go get yours Luke!

Get Smart’s bulldogs got curbed stomped until Marvin got injured. One thing that is true is that Georgia is really good at taking advantage of an injury to offensive skill players to the other team(reference Alabama last year and Marvin this year).

HS
Booger's picture

Man, why is it these type of guys always seem to leave OSU, but return for other big schools?

HS
Jay_sizzle's picture

Because OSU is an NFL factory, just going to OSU by default guarantees a team will look at you no matter how bad you play , Ex. shaun Wade

HS
Booger's picture

So is Georgia, Bama, Clemson yet they somehow get these guys to stay that one more year more times than they go early

HS
SuaveOlave's picture

They were getting them before NIL. Natty chances next year just took and even deeper dive.

HS
Bucktown 5.7x28's picture

The SEC was way ahead of NIL and so was Clemson of the past 10 years. It doesn’t matter to me. It was the worst kept secret that those schools paid to keep guys an extra year or two. Now it’s out in the open

In what way does this not indicate your assumption of them cheating?

HS

Those schools RARELY keep guys that long , idk where you see this at but almost any highly rated player from that school declares early ….. if anything its rare for a HIGHLY ranked bama player to stay

HS
Trebor40's picture

I have been frustrated about that for years. As well as impressed with how often Alabama and Georgia have a guy return for his senior year while for us it is the exception. Olave stuns us with his return for his SR year yet many others are gone.

I am not sure I agree with the premise that draft eligible players leave at a higher rate from OSU than they do from other schools.  i imagine the percentage who leave is very close across all schools over a long period of time.

HS

I don't see that. That's too much generalization. This happens when it happens, all over.

Crazy that Wypler and Paris Johnson will be leaving without one pair of gold pants. Johnson is a top 10 pick so understandable but Wypler is a second round pick at best. I would come back for the gold pants personally lol.

I think a caveat is in order. All those guys would have been on an OSU team that boat raced TUN in 2020 without any shadow of a doubt.

Leave it to the state of Ohio to be behind times on any meaningful trends. Trying now to legalize weed when it’s been legalized for several years in other states. Let’s be honest here, if weed and gambling are legalized it will have nothing to do with voters well being.  It is all about revenue.

HS

Nothing wrong with the state bringing in revenue that was going into the black market. Giving people access to a product that has both recreational and medical benefits is long over due. It's so odd that people worship alcohol but weed is somehow evil.

Yikes. Predicting losses to Penn State and Notre Dame (given how bad OSU has always been at early season big OOC games). I think we sneak one against Michigan though.

Early next season will have all the Day haters running wild around here with the team trying to figure out big losses from the off-season.

My only frustration is that we seem to have zero depth at any position, especially compared to Georgia or Alabama. There have been so many misses despite having the same number of 4 and 5 stars on the roster as our SEC foes. We need to do a bit better scouting

HS
Scorpio's picture

Not all but mainly it’s Days fault.  why? because he has this notion about respecting the other team and not letting your second stringers play with the full playbook against their second stringers. Do you see what Georgia did last night? They let their back ups play as if the game was 00. Our back ups don’t get that kind of playing time. That’s strictly on the head coach. This position that he takes about being respectful is idiotic

A fan since the Randy Gradishar days

HS
buckeyenut74's picture

Oh stop, players have left Ohio State early for years.

HS
BEasy732's picture

Yes, but it's the depth that is an issue. Rarely is the lack of depth this bad at key positions, which is a result of recruiting, which is on the coaching staff

HS
Bucktown 5.7x28's picture

There have been so many misses despite having the same number of 4 and 5 stars on the roster as our SEC foes. We need to do a bit better scouting

This is where the position coaches have to earn their money. Development is the hardest part. Getting guys here is half of the battle but the coaches still have to put in the work

not sure why you were downvoted Lou.  it is the truth.  UGA and Alabama reload each year without much drop off.  consistent championship teams are ruthless on the recruiting trail and with their own rosters.  produce or be processed out.  until day gets that mentality we will never see the results UGA and Alabama have had.  National championships would be nice, but I would rather just get back to beating ttun every year.

Big B

HS
bull1214's picture

Pre portal Alabama was dominant. They’d get a transfer or 2 but it wasn’t a necessity. Once the portal happened, they hit it hard out of necessity and lost a lot of ones that usually stuck around. No NC’s since then. Georgia doubled down on recruiting and retention. Very little portal activity. They’ve won 2 NC’s since then. We should all want to emulate Georgia not bama now.

HS
mb5599's picture

you are discounting Bama like they were Purdue.  The level of success that Saban has had at Bama is unmatched.  Smart may get there, but next year will be very interesting and I would not count Saban out.  Also, Georgia is one of the biggest hotbeds of recruiting talent out there.  no surprise that they kept quite a few of their in state 4-5*'s where as Alabama has to get their players from out of state mostly.  Bama will see a dip in recruiting due to NIL as will OSU.  Out of state players, with no allegiance to either school, who want to have the best chance to win a championship (as past history will bear out) will go to Bama over OSU.  Not to mention, Saban is going to make sure his NIL program is one of the best going forward.

Big B

HS
LoufromOSU's picture

Spoiled fans think its a birthright that Day will have them in the playoffs again and again.  Its hard no doubt.  My fear is that he missed his window for a title - he cannot keep blowing these chances.  And now there is a very real possibility that they are looking at a 3rd place finish in their division, as penn state is going to be pretty loaded next year.  We will see what happens.  All i know is that UGA's schedule is dogshit so they will pretty much be secured a spot in the SEC title game, at the least.

Everyone keeps talking about hitting the portal. It hasn’t gone well thus far. Essentially not having NIL is gonna be hard to deal with. Not many college players worth a shit are gonna turn down money for the sake of “development”. The Syracuse safety is one. As of now they’re batting .100.

I anticipate a HUGE drop off next year in the OL. Replacing Paris, a 5-star all-everything franchise left tackle, Dawand, a giant 6'8'' athletic right tackle, and Luke, a very solid multi-year starter who played his ass off on NYE-- that is NOT easy to do. We don't have replacements anywhere near their level. Not saying those guys can't be good. But we're not re-loading on the OL. We have not set the world on fire in OL recruiting, and we are coming up 0-fer in the portal. Justin Frye has a BIG ASS challenge ahead of him. With our tough as shit road schedule, McCord and Brown just gulped.

Would not surprise me if our offense struggled mightily.

I hope this works out for him. It's really tough to make it in the NFL as a defensive tackle or interior offensive lineman after just three seasons in college, and there are only ever a few teams who have center as a high draft priority. I also wonder about the reputation of Ohio State right now, after so many of our recent guards and centers entering the NFL have underperformed their draft position.

I don't think we even have a Center on our roster. The first time in a decade we haven't had a quality one waiting to take over. Corey Linsley, Jacoby Boren, Pat Elflein, Billy Price, Michael Jordan, Josh Myers, Luke Wypler, and ???? Are they sure Matthew Jones does not have another year of eligibility left? Matt Jones to center, Vimahi to right guard, and Fryar to RT?

if Matt Jones leaves, oh boy…

Donovan Jackson to LT?

I’m far less optimistic about next year than I was earlier today.

HS
Gametime's picture

You shouldn't be given the time we've got to see these three guys healthy, they balled out on the snaps they got to play this season. Now of course you want some experienced depth at LT, but Jackson was the #1 OG coming out, Jones will probably want a fully healthy season on tape and he was the #1 C in 2018 and  that would raise his stock, Vimahi and Fryar were both good in spot duty and I think Jacobs was the guy they were all raving about during bowl practices?

Time to figure shit out with transfer portal.  We need some studs in here and quick.  If not, next season could be ugly

HS
Rico11's picture

Again, not ideal and the other thing with the transfer portal is, NIL seems to play a role.  And by all accounts, OSU is still figuring out the NIL landscape.

People talking about next year being a 3-4 loss season is ridiculous. Could it happen, sure, but 1. we don’t even know what the roster will look like next year and 2.  despite all the talent that’s leaving, outside of Georgia and possibly Michigan and Alabama, every other school would gladly trade rosters with OSU.
We’ll most likely pull a few players from the portal and we are absolutely loaded at the skill positions and our defense should be vastly improved.

New QB, center, LT, and RT? :( :( :(

Yeah that's never happened before where a team has been successful replacing a QB, RT and LT. I mean how are we going to function, how does a team do this and be successful. /s

I sincerely wish him the best, and I'm confident the Buckeyes will fix any hole at this position, and for both of those reasons...

I wish he would've stayed one more year, that is, for his own good, but it looks like the dye has been cast.

Thing is, it's important to get off to a good start in the NFL, where first impressions tend to be lasting ones, whereby whenever a player isn't quite ready for primetime, he tends to get pigeonholed and might never have the same shot that he once had, on top of which, I'm also quite confident that if Wypler stayed around for another year, he'd be drafted far higher--and be paid far more money--than if he left early, whereby I'll be a bit surprised if he's more than a mid-to-late round pick. We'll see.

In other words, I'm just not confident this is the best decision for Luke's own good--quite the opposite--but just the same, I hope I'm wrong and he's right, and more importantly (i.e., for me, that is, as a fan of the Buckeyes and college football, which is a bigger priority for me than NFL prospects for individual players), I think the Buckeyes will be just fine.

Sure, they'll need to adapt, and there's always going to be some amount of discomfort that comes with change, but that's also the nature of college football... on steroids.

Between the portal and NIL (and even the looming impact of expanded playoffs, expanded coaching staffs, conference realignments, and the demise of virtually any meaningful NCAA rules and related enforcement), roster churn-and-burn and the related quality of a program's personnel/player management is bound to be a bigger issue than ever, which means that managing stability through change will be a bigger issue than ever.

To that end, IMHO, we've barely hit the tip of the iceberg, and over the course of the next decade or so, we should expect to see a number of programs rise and fall--even some of the biggest brand names--until the dust settles (if it ever does).

Inevitably, the big winners will be the programs who don't just mouth the words "next man up," but put structures and plans in place for replacing guys like Wypler ASAP vs spending much time lamenting their departures (whether or not said departures were smart decisions on the part of the player). So...

Good luck, Luke, and even more than that, good luck to Ryan Day, Justin Frye and Mark Pantoni.

I think it’s time to realize 2023 could be as much of a “rebuild” as we’ve seen since Meyer’s first year. It’s unrealistic to expect Ohio St to strike gold in the portal under even optimal conditions. And the Bucks aren’t typically geared towards building an entire unit on offense or defense from the portal. Usually a starter here or there, and some depth but as was mentioned, if Matt Jones goes, this is a complete rebuild. No reason to panic but just to understand maybe to lower the undefeated or even one loss talk for a bit

When telling the truth becomes a revolutionary concept, it’s wise to join the revolution

If we have a scrambling qb and change the play calling.  We should be fine for big 10 play but playoff games I’m concerned

Everybody calm down.   We will be back in the CFP.  We’ve recruited great over past 4 years

I honeslty don’t know why you guys follow this stuff if it’s so painful for you.

New o line coach has them playing well so I’m giving him the chance to coach these other guys up. The spring portal window will have some guys that become “the next must get’s” and i see an addition or 2.

I really did not see that coming. Very disappointed, but if that is what he felt was best for him. In the long run, coming back another year might have resulted in a higher draft pick for him.

Good luck sir...next year is going to be interesting. Breaking in a basically whole new line with a new QB. Buckle up Buckeye Fans!

Best of luck, but maaaaaaan this one sucks. I felt like if Wypler stayed, even if the OL is replacing both starting OTs and likely one OG I thought they could get it whipped into shape but now it appears the team will be breaking in 4 brand new OL-men.  That's going to be a tough ask, coach Frye better be on the damn money.

This one hurts. I was hoping he would be back for another year. If they are replacing most of the line with a new QB than next year could be rough. At least by OSU standards. They have some decent players but other guys are going to need to step up fast.

He was a really good center. I just selfishly wish he stayed another year.

Luke did as a good a job as anyone at consistently stepping up his game to match and beat what the competition had in store for him. It's gonna be tough to replace him.

HS

Had a feeling this was going to happen and this makes the offensive line room a little more shaky. We have no idea is Jakob Jones can fill the role and quite honestly I don’t think he can. There were so many misses during Studs time here. They better address it in the spring and get more bodies

HS
jwm552002's picture

He was a solid player, but my guess is he is 3-4 rounder at best. This hurts the depth for sure and if Jones leaves, we are in trouble.

HS

1) Lots of first year starters on O-Line (They could band together and surprise us)

2) Green QB (Could be an immediate star, but who knows)

3) No reason to believe corners and safeties are going to be any better (at least not until The Game)

4) Injury prone RBs  (Would love to be wrong on this)

My expectation for next season, is that we lose a couple times early or mid season, and then round into form in time for The Game.  Beat Michigan, and follow that up by beating the crap out of whoever we get in our bowl game.   I'm guessing that we won't win the conference or make the playoff, but by the end of the season we will be one of the best teams in the country, and we'll all have to deal with the frustration of knowing that we'll once again lose a bunch of our stars before 2024.  It's all about timing folks.  This was our year.  We blew it.

Sorry, there is not reason for next years Bucks team to be a 9-3 team, none. With the skill positions and an O-Line that should be at least average and a defense that again, should be able to keep the team in most games, a 10-2 season would be the floor. And yes, "We" blew it this season and it hurts.

So many negative people in here. None of us know shit about next year's O-Line roster because nobody has really played. There have been comments by coaches about players needing to step up. Urban used to do this all the time because psychology and such. Sure we dont have some of the top tackle recruits that we would like but crying about it now without information is useless.

Find another hobby for a couple months and come back for spring practice updates and the spring game.

This is a tough one but I'm happy for him. Besides being a great anchor in the middle of the line, he has a great tough nose attitude and that will be missed a lot....he plays with a chip on his shoulder and brings that attitude to the line.

I think freshman Luke Montgomery from Findlay Ohio will work his way into the starting OL rotation sooner than most think. This dude mauls people and does not stop. Very Athletic for his size as well. Watch his film from HS complete dominate player.

I live in Findlay and have heard all the pros and cons about him. I have never seen him play. Have been told about very quick feet but lacking strength at this point but works very hard. Was very disappointed to watch the highlight of him getting trucked by Keely in the all star game. Not a good look and showed lack of strength. I do not believe he had a real good showing in the game itself. That being said I think the Buckeye weight room will really benefit him and I see him a a future guard or maybe center and not tackle.  How soon? Get him developed and maybe a couple of years.

Losing 1 out of 2 between Wypler and Jones isn't bad, I thought both would bolt.

Best of luck young man!
