I know CJ is going to declare, but I wonder why he's waited this long. He has a full week left, I expect he announces on the 16th or maybe this Friday.
While I understand this standpoint, and I would be over the moon if he comes back for another ride, he's a top 5 pick. There's little he has to prove to GMs next year and the only thing he would be doing is trying to go for the 1st Overall pick, which he would be fighting Caleb Willaims for, so that's not even a given.
While I wouldn't turn down $2m myself, thats absolute peanuts compared to the actual dollars of an NFL contract. Zach Wilson got $35m just for signing his contract.
As much as I love CJ, I'm sorta torn...as much as he'll certainly leave and I shouldn't even consider what impact his staying would have. But the log jam in the QB room could have similar consequences to Jameson Williams' transferring; who personally kept Alabama from being a 2 or-more loss team in 2021
Side note how interesting the specific situation makes for the success you may have. Williams turned in an outstanding performance that year at Bama. Now, while two guys ahead of him at Ohio State had 1,000+ yards receiving as rookies in the NFL Williams has one catch for 41 yards in six games with a total of 9 targets. I know he was coming off that ACL tear so clearly had an impact not only in games played but how he did when he finally could play.
I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan!
Alot of guys will wait until the season is totally over. I mean college football season period. There is not a debate with him. I wish he would come back another year as it makes OSU national title contenders right away. With the other guys they have a shot but they need to grow fast.
Woo hoo! Wow, what a GREAT receiving room for a new QB. With all three starting WR’s back and our #1 TE plus a wealth of other WR talent (which we basically did not even get a glimpse of) and all/most of our best RB’s back, the offense will, once again, have a ton of weapons. I sure hope Wypler comes back too!
He might, but I think Day would prefer McCord to win it and will give him every opportunity to win it. That and I think McCord is as good as advertised
Don’t think Day has any preference. He wants the guy that shows he’s the best. If it is McCord great. Brown great. I think it’s a blank slate for both that won’t be decided until fall camp.
If McCord is what he wants his offense to be, he sure isn’t recruiting like it. Devin Brown and Lincoln Kienholz are very different QB’s than Kyle. I agree with ASJ, Day wants the guy who plays the best, whoever it is.
I think Devin Brown would have to be significantly better than McCord to get the starting nod out of camp. The idea of McCord transferring out before the season starts and leaving 2 scholarship QBs on the roster has to at least be considered a factor for Day. I know people will say "you play your best players. Period.", but the portal creates a new set of challenges.
This doesn't even make sense...why would he "prefer McCord to win it all" If that is how Day makes decisions, then he needs to go. Sounds like old Urban days...stick with a guy because he's a SR or returning starter. Play the best man...Period. I think after Georgia game Day realizes you need a mobile QB to win...that is NOT McCord
Those who stir the shit pot should have to lick the spoon.
This is a big question mark for me. The rest of the offense can be stacked, but if the tackles struggle it'll be rough sledding against any DL with a pulse. Especially for a first time QB.
This will be the most stacked offense in program history
I don't think it will be nearly as stacked as going into this season. You don't "gain" anyone from last season and you likely lose Stroud and lost JSN. You also lose both tackles.
You replace Stroud with a guy who was a 5* recruit likely, but Stroud was a second year starter. The tackles are an unknown (not saying that is a bad thing) and no WR is going to be as good as JSN would have been if healthy this year
I personally don’t consider JSN a part of this offense this past season so he doesn’t factor into my opinion at all
Understand what you're saying but I personally disagree.
I think we will have a very good offense, but losing Stroud is massive. I know people think his record against Michigan and in big games wasn't good, but to me he was the best pure passer OSU has ever had. Of course the evolution of the game could mean the next guy is as good or better, so I won't say he will be the best for a long time, but that's just a massive loss.
100% agree. Replacing CJ, Paris, Dawand and JSN is A LOT. Championships are won with dominating tackles keeping edge rushers out of your face, and allowing a QB to scan the field and hit your stud receviers. We absolutely would've won it all if JSN was healthy and Marv didn't get knocked out. We would've scorched Georgia's secondary even more and humiliated TCU with a completely healthy WR room.
Great points. the only thing I would amend slightly is the tackles. They are not a complete unknown. I know it was limited snaps, but Josh Fryar looked very good when he was in. Am glad he was able to get a bunch of meaningful snaps this year.
Given what they're doing in the NFL its only going to get crazier in retrospect that we had Justin Fields throwing to both Olave and Wilson (and hopefully we can add JSN and Dobbins to that list)
I was also called not a realist because I didn’t think Georgia would blow Ohio State out. Ohio State’s offense will have the most talent it’s ever had at the skill positions next season.
You're entitled to that opinion. For my money, I'll take Troy Smith, Santonio Holmes, Teddy Ginn and Beanie Wells as my skill position players over next year's team, MHJr's amazing skill set notwithstanding.
Not surprised at all. He would've been a very late draft pick. He seriously needs to work on his blocking and the finer points of being a TE. I know he's had a weird career here with him playing 3 positions. He is a nice athlete, though.
Cade is a great kid with plenty of potential, I give him A LOT of credit for sticking it out with the constant position changes. That would drive anyone crazy. Me, for sure. No sane NFL GM would draft him in the 2nd-4th round. He is literally a C- blocker, and that's being kind. If you are not a good in-line or perimeter blocker, you'll be out of the league before you can blink your eyes.
Considering he was dealing with injuries for part of the season, he's actually a good blocker. Dane Brugler from The Athletic stated around mid-October that Stover could have been drafted on blocking and special teams alone, but that his receiving ability shown this season would move him up to possibly the 2nd or 3rd round.
Don't bother, he's negative know it all. Saw Stover miss some high visibility edge blocks on the perimeter this year, therefore he knows for sure Stover is a terrible blocker. I'm sure he views more tape than NFL scouts do.
If he can improve on his blocking and not whiff on assignments, then yes he can definitely be a reasonably high pick in 2024. I'm not the only one who feels that way. He really is not a good blocker. But that can be worked on. You know why Luke Farrell will be a really good NFL player for a long time? He was an ELITE blocker here and in the NFL. That's what we need Cade to become.
By the way, my opinion counts the same as yours does. This is an open fan forum.
That simple, definitive, no drama, to the point, etc. tweet symbolizes Stover. If only all announcements, decisions, commitments, etc. could be like this. Haha.
Was so good early in the year. Kind of dropped off late. Definitely could have been because of injury or teams focusing more on him. Super excited about his potential with another year in the system.
If you want to make the world a better place take a look at what Kevin Warren is doing and do the opposite.
Had a great season. Look forward to his continued improvement in only his second year as being 100% in the TE room. Interesting to see what he and a healthy Royer can do on the field at the same time. Offense has no shortage of weapons, new quarterback or not.
Glad to see "Farmer Gronk" coming back for another go. Will give him time to further sharpen his skills and improve his draft stock even further. I assume he is closing in his degree, so Keze is right in that his family probably urged him to stick it out and finish up.
Work on blocking technique and he could be a solid 2nd-3rd round pick in 2024. Huge bonus. I think he was playing through a lot of injuries late this year. Just recall the shots he took in some earlier games...they add up.
"Champions don’t do extraordinary things, they do the ordinary things better than anybody else" - Chuck Noll
Concur with all he will be much improved, tremendous athlete and tough. Work on the exterior/downfield blocking, and please teach him to stop hurdling would be tacklers - spectacular, but too dangerous of a move.
That’s a possibility for a lot of players BUT he was playing an increased role as the season went on. “The penalty” and then his injury killed that momentum. Could go either way
Was he actually too injured to play in the Peach Bowl or were the coaches disciplining him for his actions against Michigan? I've gotten the sense that Day hasn't been very happy with him ever since the headbutt incident and I've also gotten the sense that he's not very happy being moved to TE (when he was originally recruited as a WR).
At times he looked like the best TE in the country. He's an incredible athlete as demonstrated by his ability to move to the other side of the ball and be an elite LB in a huge game. As with everyone on the team, here's to hoping for a healthy, injury free 2023! BOOM!!
He's a guy that clearly has a lot of nuances to learn about the position, but also clearly has a pretty good ceiling. I constantly remind myself that at this time last year he wasn't even on offense. I think we'll see some improved blocking for sure, ideally better hands, too. Here's to a full spring and fall camp practicing as a TE.
Stover's decision is the classic win/win situation. He definitely solidifies the TE room, and I believe he needs another year of experience before he's ready for the pros. ( I think he realizes that also).
If you have two people that agree on everything, that only means one of them is not thinking at all.
I have to wonder if there is an impending transfer. Scott would seem frustrated in his OSU role. WR to TE that hasn't emerged yet. Not saying, just wondering
Boy, I got vision and the rest of the world wears bifocals! - Butch Cassidy
I think Scott is as good as gone at this point. Not only has his transition to TE not worked out so far but the coaching staff was not happy with him after the stupid headbutt penalty against Michigan. I think his days here are numbered and he'll transfer out to go someplace where he can play WR again.
GREAT news about Cade Stover. Excellent work ethic, nice hands, even better speed.
And, Garrick Hodge, Cade is NOT from Mansfield. He's neither a T-Y Tyger nor a Madison Ram — but rather, a Minuteman from Lexington High School, Lexington, OH.
Love Cade, but this year is absolutely stacked with TEs in the draft. Coming back is wise on many levels. He absolutely would not jump Washington, Kincaid, or Mayer in the draft. And there are several more that could have gone before him.
"Champions don’t do extraordinary things, they do the ordinary things better than anybody else" - Chuck Noll
Thanks for warning us Cade. One of the primary reasons our Offense was clicking on all cylinders most of the Peach Bowl was because he wasn't on the field.
- Bobby Boucher is the best Foosball QB since Joe Mantegna -
I'm with you on that. Not a big Cade Stover fan at all. We have some quality options behind him. Not to mention a prototype from the Deep South in Jelani Thurman coming in. Not saying he is Brock Bowers and will be ready as a true freshman, but he was rated as high as Bowers was coming out of high school and he definitely seems to check all the boxes of what are looking for at the TE position. He should be in the mix regardless of age. If you can play, you can play.
- Bobby Boucher is the best Foosball QB since Joe Mantegna -
Not really. What other guys? They are already hosting TEs from the portal because they have some questions after Royer and Stover.
Stover needs to get better at blocking and had some drops but given he was not always a TE I thought he played great. And was more injured that most folks will give him credit for.
What about TE Sam Hart 2021, and TE Bennett Christian 2022 are still on the team as far as I know. At least they actually were recruited as Tight Ends, unlike Stover who came in out of high school as a LB. That's not even including Royer and Thurman. We have bigger transfer portal needs than TE.
- Bobby Boucher is the best Foosball QB since Joe Mantegna -
Royer was greatly exposed as a poor blocker when he was forced into action against Georgia so we're going to need to see significant improvement from him in that area before we can trust him to play more snaps. Bennett Christian however is supposed to be primarily a blocking TE so perhaps he takes over Rossi's role in that regard next season.
Big return. Needs to work a bit on blocking but a big weapon coming back.
I am curious about the choices of some of the OL. The tackles are both gone, but what about the interior? That said, Stover being back is big. Hoping some more guys return as well.
But maybe its just me, but at times I feel like we use the TE TOO much. We have all these amazing WRs and the TE feels like a wasted spot on the field. Like I get it for situational use but Day's offense seems like a TE is always on the field. A lot of times I just want to see 4/5 true WRs on the field.
Stover was great at times, but I also feel like a true WR would've been better a lot of times as well. I wish we saw more diversity at times. More personnel groupings please!

Sweet! Another great weapon for either Brown or McCord to utilize
I know CJ is going to declare, but I wonder why he's waited this long. He has a full week left, I expect he announces on the 16th or maybe this Friday.
I think this is a leadership/respect thing for the program to wait to the final moment as a token to show it was no small decision.
Or he could be weighing all options. Dude is competitor, he wanted a NC.

Lol he's gone, as he should be. Time to get paid.
I agree, CJ shouldnt risk injury by coming back but everyone thought Olave was gone as well. Never know with the young ones and what drives them....

Time to get paid? He's been getting paid. Last I heard to the tune of $2M.

Three actually. All first round picks get a 4 year contract, fully guaranteed.

No shit. He's literally stealing money from the Jets right now because they were dumb enough to draft him 2nd overall lmao.

This should be a red banner! Huge!

Speaking of Wypler, did he ever have even one bad snap all year? I don't recall him ever messing up a snap.
Amazing.
I can't remember a single one...that is amazing.
This will be the most stacked offense in program history.
As long as McCord and the tackles pan out we can book another trip to the playoffs for Ryan Day.
Would not count Devin Brown out. He just might win the job.

I agree it won’t be settled until next fall, mainly because he doesn’t want the loser to transfer.
I think he would prefer McCord to start a year, go to the NFL. Brown start a year and go to the NFL, and then Kienholz take over.
Day handpicked every qb in the room. They’re all what he wants the offense to be.
Bull - He did, but Day wants a pocket passing quarterback. So whoever is the best thrower from the pocket will win the job.
McCord will win 10/10 from the pocket
If McCord is what he wants his offense to be, he sure isn’t recruiting like it. Devin Brown and Lincoln Kienholz are very different QB’s than Kyle. I agree with ASJ, Day wants the guy who plays the best, whoever it is.

Wonder if his injury issues the last few games contributed to his decision. Gives us our receivers returning to help with the new QB.

The story was just back spasms the day or two later, not sure if that has changed since then.

He must feel good about what’s coming up!
Have a feeling that an education is strong in the Stover family and was big in the decision.

One more building block coming back. His best games are ahead of him!
Nice and right to the point. Feel like Stover was just really learning the ropes of the position this past year. Think he will be much improved.

Going to be a nice safety net for a new starting QB. Stover had moments this season where I thought he was the best Ohio State since Hartsock.
Glad to see "Farmer Gronk" coming back for another go. Will give him time to further sharpen his skills and improve his draft stock even further. I assume he is closing in his degree, so Keze is right in that his family probably urged him to stick it out and finish up.

I have to wonder if there is an impending transfer. Scott would seem frustrated in his OSU role. WR to TE that hasn't emerged yet. Not saying, just wondering

I think Scott is as good as gone at this point. Not only has his transition to TE not worked out so far but the coaching staff was not happy with him after the stupid headbutt penalty against Michigan. I think his days here are numbered and he'll transfer out to go someplace where he can play WR again.

Glad he's coming back........I hope he is utilized even more in 2023.

Cade Stover coming back next year is huge.
This guy likely could've worked his way to the #1 or at worst #2 TE off the board.
Lock up one Captain's spot for next year right now.

Love Cade, but this year is absolutely stacked with TEs in the draft. Coming back is wise on many levels. He absolutely would not jump Washington, Kincaid, or Mayer in the draft. And there are several more that could have gone before him.

Running the table and winning a natty baby!!!!!!!!
Tons of weapons,m. The OL is what I am concerned about, especially if Wyler leaves. It all revolves around the trenches.
Knowledge isn't free, you have to pay attention
Who is Wyler?
I enjoy adding my own people to the roster, apparently.
Wypler.
Thank you.

Thanks for warning us Cade. One of the primary reasons our Offense was clicking on all cylinders most of the Peach Bowl was because he wasn't on the field.

This is great! But now the TE room is getting a bit crowded. I wonder if any hit the portal.
Stover is a ...Beast...Welcome back for another year...SIR...Go Cade...Go Bucks
I'm going to be the contrarian. He was ok. Poor blocker and several key drops. I wanted to see a more athletic TE like Royer for next year.

Frustrating to see OSU have talented guys ride the bench for 2-3 years when TTUN has a freshman from Idaho (!!) play and cook OSU in the process.

This is huge, dude is a beast and will only get better with another year and his stock will go up.

I'm happy but I imagine McCord is doing a jig about now. BOOM!
Big return. Needs to work a bit on blocking but a big weapon coming back.
I am curious about the choices of some of the OL. The tackles are both gone, but what about the interior? That said, Stover being back is big. Hoping some more guys return as well.
Donovan Jackson will be back. Matt Jones and Wypler possibly could declare but I think there's a good chance they're back as well.

I have turned the page and can't wait until THE 2023 Buckeyes take the field!!!

Boom!! Hopefully Stroud is next.
The farmer is from Lexington, not Mansfield. Glas he's returning.
Go Bucks!
Trust me. A Ryan Day offense wont be a problem.
Nope, its the Ryan Day defense that is always the problem.

You can say that again
Great news for sure! Glad to have him back!

Good news.
This huge news! Definitely needed next year with some of the departures we are going to have on the offensive line.
This makes me happy
