Way-Too-Early 2023 Heisman Watch: Ohio State’s Kyle McCord, TreVeyon Henderson and Marvin Harrison Jr. Among Top 20 Odds

How Harrison Jr. isn't farther up this list, or at least the first non-QB after Corum is beyond me. At this point the odds list is just a "who plays QB at a school with above-average offense the last few years".

To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.

Everyone knows this is a QB trophy, they are just throwing him in there as filler /s

There is a very recent exception though.......maybe Harrison Jr can make it 2 out of the last 4

The award has become a QB heavy award given to the guy with the best film highlights, with some stats and team ranking sprinkled into the consideration. Also, because Ohio State has the best WR group in college football, it gives the opposition a counter argument that MHJ benefits from the system he plays in. I disagree with it, but unfortunately this is what the award has become.

It’s only a preseason list. Being a WR with a new starter are legit  reasons. We had 3 last year and 2 didn’t play so this list is really nothing but reading material. He is the top WR on the list

HS

I love the odds on Harrison. Some regarded him as the best pure football player in the country last season and he will certainly be in the running for that again this season. He obviously has the name recognition and pre-season hype coming off of a unanimous all-american year last year. He is a highlight reel waiting to happen.

I also expect Day & Hartline to spend all offseason scheming up how to move him around to avoid double teams when possible. If he can stay healthy all year and keep catching TDs at a high rate I think voters will give him a legitimate thought over a QB.

HS
OSUGrad2014's picture

You can put some money on him. Could be the second coming of Mac Jones and DeVonta Smith.

HS

We hear this BS hype every year. I realize there is not much to write about, but pull up the Stories last year or the year prior at this time and just change some names.
let’s wait and see if we have anyone good enough and consistent enough next season to deserve talking about.

Not disagreeing with you, but why even post this comment? Some people like to get juiced up during the off-season - that is actually what fans do. What value is there in sharing skepticism, especially since, as you suggest, this is all pure speculation?

It is ok to just scroll...

Can't help but wonder about the McCord to Harrison JR connection.

If they played well together in high school, can't help but think they could or do build off of that in practice.......... possibly advantageous??

Both Henderson and Harrison are out as they are not QBs. Cute to put them in there though.

McCord > McCarthy

And, one has barely played. Lol

HS

McCord may end up being better QB than McCarthy.  I’m certainly hopeful. But right now we have absolutely nothing to support this.  Mop up duty hand offs, compared to 2-0 on the rivalry and 2 conference titles.
I hope whoever is our QB next year whether it be McCord or Brown, ends up being better than McCarthy.

HS

Until proven otherwise Ohio State’s starting QB under Ryan Day will be a Heisman finalist and first round pick.

If McCord wins the starting job we can safely assume he’s better than McCarthy.

So we can pencil in 7 Super Bowl rings for Mac Jones?

HS

I don’t know if he’s better or not. But, his odds are twice as good to win the Hiesman, already.

HS
milhouse4588's picture

In case of comparing the odds of the QB in a Day offense vs a QB in a Harbaugh offense, you can't necessarily extrapolate that to mean that one is better than the other.

The QB in Ryan Day's offense is always going to superior numbers over most QBs in the country due to the quality of the program, lack of competition in the conference, and the amount we pass the ball. That supports a stronger Heisman campaign.

A QB in a Harbaugh offense is not asked to do nearly as much and won't put up numbers at the same rate due to the offense he's in. These odds simply show that, while both QBs are on teams that will likely be Top 10 throughout the year which means the team qualifications to be considered (zero or one loss in the regular season pretty much) will be satisfied, one QB is going to have much better numbers.

To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.

Henderson isn’t even the best RB on the team.  Let alone the best player in the nation.  Also, a QB from North Carolina is the odds favorite to win it?   Never heard of him.  The powerhouse UNC football program.

HS

Can anybody educate me on how to embed YouTube videos?

HS
fritziebuck's picture

Even when he’s healthy, he’s not a between the tackles, get downhill back.  Miyan’s averaged more yards per carry for 2 years now.  I also like how Hayden gets downhill.  I like my RBs physical.

HS
jefferson970's picture

I don’t think we can truly evaluate his performance until he plays a season at full strength. Even his freshman season was a battle with nicks & dings plus he hadn’t played in nearly two years.

We can agree he hasn’t yet shown a bent for churning his legs to pick up an extra yard or two in the pile, or finding a slight crease in which to fall forward.

Hmm

Harrison and Treyveon being so low is quite the surprise. McCord being so high is too. His lone start was against Akron, even Joe Bauserman lit up Akron (12-16, 163, 3TD's). The Buckeye offense will be on fire again next year, so whoever the QB is, will be a Heisman contendeer. Hopefully Treyveon has to prove his freshman year wasn't a fluke. Harrison is the real deal, if he is not a Heisman finalist, I would be shocked.

I love Henderson as much as anyone, but unless something changes, he’s not a Heisman-caliber back in my opinion. He is lethal in space but he’s not the kind of RB that can carry a team. I hope his best football is ahead of him though and that he can get and stay healthy. He’s talented, for sure, and certainly can be a major contributor.

Couldn't agree more with this.  We've missed on some great RB recruits (i.e. Bijan Robinson) and even though our RB's have put up some good numbers, I think those numbers are more a result of having such a lethal passing attack and a really good offensive line.  We have good running backs but I haven't seen a "great" OSU RB in a while.  Looking forward to seeing Pryor next year.

HS
stlbuckeye15's picture

We have really good RB’s but yea, I wouldn’t describe any as elite. At least not yet. Honestly, of the ones in the stable I think Hayden might be the next great one. He doesn’t dance around, has nice burst and just seems to know how to move the chains. Also plays bigger than his size. Henderson almost seems to play smaller than he is.

It will be interesting to see how things play out with Pryor but I don’t see him as an every down back. Great hands and like Henderson probably flashes in space but I don’t think he has the size or physicality to be a RB that can be leaned on for a whole game. Guess we’ll see!

If Harrison stays healthy and doesn’t at least when the Biletnikoff award, something is seriously wrong.

More important than all of this though, Bucks really need to beat TTUN.

I really dont follow the Heisman competition anymore.  Its a joke now IMO, the winner just ends up being the most popular QB... Devonta Smith was an exception.

You've been playing the foosball behind my back!?!

I had to smirk a bit to see the odds higher for McCord over McCarthy, not that it means much. Made my day!

I really wish other positions received as much consideration as QB for the award that supposedly goes to “the most outstanding player in college football.” Yes, the role of the QB in a team’s success might be (or appear to be) the most obvious, but arguments can be made for the presence or absence of certain RBs and WRs being critical, and much the same for defensive players who are absolute game-wreckers (ie, Suh in 2009).

It speaks volumes that QBs who have seen barely any snaps (don’t take it as a knock on McCord specifically - it’s the system that’s the problem) or have shown such high ceiling/low floor potential (see Milton and Rattler) are already “favorites” over many RB/WR who have already demonstrated that they are outstanding players.

Heisman is a QB award. Handle the ball every snap is a prerequisite.

So too much is made of Heisman - so many never made next level.

Georgia has two QBs in the race.

HS

So I can put $500 on MH to win 25,000? I'll take that especially when a WR from Alabama just won it. Also since OSU doesn't have a returning starting QB with all the hype like when Fields, Haskins, and Stroud had going their Jr season after successful sophomore campaigns, Harrison is likely  to get the hype. He's got the talent, the family name recognition, and there's not returning QB who just put up big numbers who is grabbing all the national media recognition.
It could actually happen and this bet is tremendous value.

That's because there is a coach in the Big Ten renowned for his abilities to work with quarterbacks and there is another coach in the Big Ten that actually does incredible work with Quarterbacks and isn't a product of a hype machine.

Even though it is a QB award, some of those above Marvin Harrison JR haven't proved themselves to be great nearly as much as he has. Unfortunate for him that the nation's best WR doesn't have much of a chance to move up significantly.

Can someone please advise how I bet $100 on Marvin Harrison Jr winning the Heisman at +5000?
