Was the Peach Bowl Our ‘92 Duke Kentucky Game?

I hate Kentucky and TTUN with a burning passion that rages inside of me like an inferno of combustible nuclear gas.  But I definitely see your connection here.. I was far too young to recall 1992... But it does feel like Knowles in year 2 should get the defense in a better spot.. Especially with Tommy and Steele back.. We had some nice young pieces to play with in Styles and Hicks... Get Kourt back from injury... Carter coming in from Syracuse.. Don't want to sleep on Stokes either.. But assuming we get healthy reengages freshmen version of Burke and healthy Hancock.. I like us. Let Jack play opposite of JT... Lets run this ish back.

Great comparison!

Both (UK-Duke and UGA-OSU) were games for the ages. UK-Duke will have far more lasting power due to the 2 OTs and amazing toss and basket to win it. But otherwise the comparison holds true and this was arguably the most entertaining semifinal to date (obviously all of us liked the 2015 Sugar Bowl more because of the result).

As for OSU 1990-1992, with all due respect to the other standout players on those teams, that run comes down to Jimmy Jackson. I loved Funderburke as well, but the decline from 1992 to 1993 was apparent as to the impact JJ had.

That '92 Elite Eight game remains my biggest Buckeye heartache. Bigger than 96 TTUN, 98 MSU, 19 Clemson. I really thought the Bucks (despite being outplayed for 2/3 of the game), had willed themselves to victory with that mid-late second half effort. Unfortunately, Webber hit some big free throws and we failed to hold on to a 4-point lead late and failed to deliver on the final possession. By OT, the momentum was al back in Michigan's court.

And yes, hopefully we mirror the rise UK had after that '92 game. We have the potential to do so.

Chris Jent was fouled at the end of regulation in the 92 game vs UM. Horrible non-call

The big one was that we had a four-point lead and he was fouled shooting a 3. They didn’t call it (even the announcers said they missed it). Michigan scored 4 and  it went to OT.

That's an interesting parallel and comparison. Hadn't considered that, but it's a really good thought exercise.

I think the 2022 Buckeyes can either be 1992 Kentucky - who lost an epic game but went on a nice run of success or the 1992 Basketball buckeyes who saw the end of an era in that loss

I don't see any way we're 1992 Buckeye basketball in this analogy. That team was really built on one incredible player without a sustainable core to keep it going after he left. It may have looked like they were building something with the continued improving success, but there was already a shaky foundation underneath. Jim Jackson left for the NBA and everything fell apart.

By comparison, while there are some questions about 2023, I don't see any fundamental flaws; if anything, there's an obvious path for 2023 to have a similar or even better team than 2022 despite the loss of Stroud to the NFL.

We need to step up the money side of things to get to a Kentucky type level

God > Family > Buckeyes football

Interesting idea. I'd sign up for being UK in that situation. I always thought if OSU/UM met in the playoff it'd be like UNC/DUKE meeting in the final four this past year.

A little bit of objectivity can go a long way

Kentucky dynasty? There was a duke dynasty. Kentucky wins a nattie in basketball about as frequently as O State in football, which is, not nearly enough for the talent that has passed through the program.

I hate how true the comparison is.. How different does it feel if we actually cash in on a loaded 2015 roster. missed chance in 2019 with a defense that could've possibly competed with Joey B and the LSU boys and then won the one we were good enough to win this year.  4 Nattys since 2014 would put you near the apex.  Would've. Should've. Could've.. I am hopeful that once we get over the hump again with Day it catapults into rolling to a few more.

I remember watching Laettner hit that shot and not knowing how to feel.  I disliked both teams equally.  Kentucky (a la OSU v UGA) was the better team that night.  I'll give credit where it is due, Coach K at that time was still developing kids and avoiding the "one and done" types that have been the mainstay at UK for more than 30 years.  Duke was nothing before Coach K.   Kentucky has been very good for more than 75 years, racism and scandals noted and recognized as such.  Understanding those facts...they have won a lot of basketball games

The question becomes, is UGA the new Duke? Will Kirby's success translate to multiple national championships over the next 10-15 years as it did for Coach K?  UGA had been totally irrelevant in football since the Herschel Walker days of the 80's.  They are the pretty new girl in class that everyone wants to sit with.   Kirby is finally keeping the talent in Georgia from leaving, and he's also stealing guys out from under his next door neighbors.  We shall see if they can keep it going, as they just ran two amazing recruiting classes through their program that will rival any two year span in the history of the NFL draft.

From my seat, I think OSU football is similar to UK basketball.  Attracts top talent, competes for national championships on the regular, and occasionally wins one.  Coach Day runs a high octane offense, so as long as he is in Columbus Ohio State will always have top tier offensive talent.   The question will be can he also attract the defensive talent to go with all that offense.  Kirby did it the other way...sacrificed offense for defense on the recruiting trail.  When Fields left him, and it became obvious that he was consistently choosing wrong when it came to which QB to play....he must have figured, "well, let's make it hard for the other team to score."  It worked.  Kirby has never had to deal with a mass exodus to the NFL in the past.  We shall see what the ramifications are for UGA moving forward, as they have lost A LOT of dudes on both sides of the ball, especially on the defensive side.  Bama was reloading this year....so they can expect to see them in the SEC Championship game (and maybe the CFP) in 2023.

As for Jimmy Jackson, I don't think OSU has ever had a kid walk on campus and have such an immediate impact on a program.   All class...all the time.  Dude was a great college player that made everyone around him better.  Too bad he didn't play for a better coach that could have recruited better talent around him.  They were literally one above average forward away from being unbelievably great.

Go Bucks!

It was the most inspirational loss of my lifetime.

Honestly, ever since I went to that Oregon game at the Horseshoe where they got pushed around, it seemed like this program was falling off, becoming soft, no chance to really compete for a title.  Then there was Alabama, then two Michigan games.  People saying fire Day, disaster, wheels fell off, etc.

The wheels are on and this thing is right on the brink of rolling everybody over.

My spirits are as high as they've been about OSU football in about 3 years.
