Any chance Stroud reclassifies to 24? Any updates?

Not one OL in Ohio? Surely there are OL in Ohio that can play at this level as most need a year or two. I just can’t fathom that at all.

MICHIGAN STILL SUCKS

HS

We just offered two Ohio OL on Friday.

HS
Buckeyecid's picture

Ohio kids will always be difficult to evaluate because of the lack of spring ball. On top of that, OL is one of the most difficult positions to project. It just takes a little bit more time to identify OL in Ohio that are OSU caliber.

That is not true.

HS

The OHSAA is pretty restrictive when it comes to spring/non-fall practices, weightlifting, and other team functions compared to the south.  So yeah, I would definitely say it has an impact on in-state player evaluations.  IMO it has an impact on overall player development as well.

You've been playing the foosball behind my back!?!

How does it impact evaluations? Just gives them less.

HS
Beantown_Buckeye's picture

That impacts evaluations. More evaluations gives you a better read on a player - that's true in any sport. The more you see a player, the more you become comfortable in determining who that player is.

HS

I’m going to go ahead and assume you’ve never coached football in Ohio. Spring practices are a must in order for players to continue to develop. Lifting and speed training are great in the Spring, but they are not good substitute for the time you could have spent actually practicing and developing players.

Your assumption is incorrect. I have. You guys TOTALLY missed my point. Evaluations and development are 2 different things.

While Day and Hartline are here, there is nothing to worry about at QB and WR.

Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

HS

Devin Brown and Kienholz were the result of the dynamic changes in QB recruiting and most fans feel pretty good about their potential.  So I'm not worried.  OL, DL. DB on the other hand.  I am happy to see more DL offers than usual.

Updates to Big Board:

  • Add OL Devontae Armstrong (OH)
  • Add OL Deontae Armstrong (OH)
  • Add S Jordon Johnson-Rubell (FL)
  • Add Commitment Date Justin Scott 1/31/23
  • Remove Commitment Date Christian Bentancur (1/13)
  • Appears the strikethrough edit does not copy+paste over to new thread easily, we may need to create new group as tOSU offered but committed elsewhere to avoid constant re-work every new thread or go back to just removing altogether.

  • ‘24 OH 3* DL Ted Hammond from Cincy St X has been offered by TTUN, Oklahoma and Louisville in the last 3 days bringing his total offers to 21.
  • ’24 OH 3* TE Gavin Grover from Olentangy spent yesterday at MSU Junior Day.

Anyone want to take a guess and name the next commitment for this class, I don’t believe there is anyone who is close to deciding that we have a legit shot at but would welcome a surprise commitment, I’m going to go with Scott as mine.

HS
Beantown_Buckeye's picture

Elias Rudolph in the next 6 weeks wouldn't surprise me, although it'll probably be some out of state player we are barely talking about right now.

HS
Brutus16's picture

You mean someone that decommits due to NIL at the last minute?

HS
Beantown_Buckeye's picture

Most cycles the Buckeyes suffer about four decommitments. Last year was five, but one (Glenn) was because OSU wanted to and did upgrade, and one was a unique personal situation (Dijon). NIL played a role in 2023 recruiting but overall there wasn't some out of whack decommitment number.

HS
CliftonBuck's picture

We have thrown out a handful of Ohio offers now, you would think they are going to try to push for a couple of those guys more local to get on board early. Maybe if they can get traction with the twins on the OL or finish out one of their local cornerback recruitments.

HS
gobucks1966's picture

My issue with the twins is how many do we take at o line? Lets just say five for sake of argument. We have one and it's been mentioned Seaton is very high with us from what I read so if you take the twins there is a lot of meat on the table for just one more player. Plus only going by what has been reported they are not OSU caliber. Didn't read about Andrews who is another top end player I guess Kurlic has thoughts about him. We have no idea what the plans are but my guess is the twins are plan B if all fails. They mentioned that their not a package I wonder about that who knows.

  • ‘24 MO 4* WR Jeremiah McClellan and MO 5* WR Ryan Wingo spent the weekend at Tennessee. McClellan plans to trim his list of schools soon and stated the only 3 he knew for sure are tOSU, TTUN and Tenn.
  • Notre Dame held their big Junior Day this weekend. ‘24 GA 4* TE Walter Mathews was the highest rated prospect with shared tOSU interests in attendance. Other uncommitted prospects included IN 4* OT Styles Prescod, recently offered Chicago RB Darrion Dupree, twin 4* brothers Jacob and Jarod Smith, NC 4* DL Bryce Young and MN 3* DL Jide Abasiri, not a lot of crossover there yet.
  • MSU offers ‘24 OH 3* DL Javon “JJ” Hammonds from Wayne after Junior day visit. IMG 5* DL David Stone was the only prospect of note with shared tOSU interest at the moment. They did have a couple of intriguing secondary visitors in TX 4* S Aaron Flowers and IL 3* S Leontre Bradford (impressive Hudl)

  • Per 247 ‘24 FL 5* DB Charles Lester, who recently announced a Top5 which included tOSU, visited Florida State over the weekend and had positive things to say about the Noles afterwards. “I've been a Seminole my whole life,” Lester said. “I wouldn’t say there’s a leading team, but I just released my top 5 schools. If anybody is a leader, it’s Florida State, but everybody kind of sits in the same spot right now.”
  • ‘24 FL ATH Ricky Knight went from unranked and zero offers to 6 offers within 3 hours after FSU, PSU, Miami, and Pitt offered. I always wonder what sparks such a sudden change in a kids recruitment, well apparently running 21.6 mph on catapult during a tryout will do that, lol.
HS

Alright Lester just commit to FSU already…ain’t nobody going to hate on that.

Yeah, what I can take away from that is that is Florida State, unless something really interesting happened and somebody gave him enough money to convince him otherwise.

HS

Gotta lockdown west and Scott at cornerback. Our on field cb play just doesn’t have the momentum it did a few years ago. Until we get that back it’ll be tough sledding outside of Ohio.

  • ‘24 GA 5* S Mike Matthews was at Tennessee as well this weekend.
  • Also, I saw some scuttlebutt on ’24 TN 4* RB Boo Carter saying he was forced to change schools in the middle of playoffs for rumored inappropriate touching of a female. This Article did not elaborate on reason, “Chattanooga Christian School (CCS) principal Chad Dirkse confirmed Carter is no longer enrolled at the school but would not elaborate further. CCS head coach Phil Massey told the Times Free Press Carter was absent for undisclosed reasons.” If rumors are true, he sounds like a hard pass for tOSU.
HS
Buckster's picture

I hope HC Ryan Day and Staff can quickly identify the players they want and can get a commitment from early on in this 2024 class.  I thought it was just a waste of time and money to keep recruiting Downs, Keeley & Wilson all the way to the end when it was really obvious they had a preference to stay down south in the same region they are from.  Especially when we knew the competition was Georgia and Alabama.  They wanted to play in the SEC and stay south.  It's not about giving up but it is more about the reality of it.  The Staff knows when there is legit interest vs pulling teeth in these cases.

HS
Beantown_Buckeye's picture

Disagree in part. Ohio State did need to take a few more commitments, as I don't think having another 20-ish-man class was ideal. On the other hand, I don't agree with your assessment of some of those 5-star recruitments. Downs and Wilson weren't coming back to campus for The Game just for fun, and Downs was committed to Bama and I'm sure they weren't thrilled about it. Ohio State had chances to win those recruitments, and for multiple reasons did not.

In the end, the Buckeyes have to compete in those recruitments and win some of them. You can't just concede players like that to Bama and UGA and expect to compete for the National Title most years. Bypassing those guys and taking a couple more guys ranked 300th isn't likely to move the needle. So while I think taking a few more easier to get guys is a smart move for depth, you can't do it as a replacement for impact guys like Downs and Wilson.

HS
napbuck's picture

If you want to be the best sometimes you have to try and recruit and land the best players, I just wish they would of had some backup plans in place for the DE’s, if we have anyone else transfer out this offseason we will have some big time depth issues.

HS
bull1214's picture

Mickens was 4 star verballed to LSU. Moore is a top 60 player seen as a tweener DE/DT. We may not have gotten them if they got the others. Sounds like a great fallback plan to me considering. It wasn’t likely they would get all of them regardless.

HS
napbuck's picture

I don’t consider them traditional DE’s, it been rumored that Mickens was going to play the Jack position and I think Moore is a 3 tech by his second year on campus.

HS
bull1214's picture

Not calling mickens a d end is like saying sawyer isn’t a d end. They are but they stand up a little more. Moore’s final size and position will be a mystery til he hits the weight room but he’s no bigger than Keeley and matayo at the moment.

HS
napbuck's picture

Moore is listed at 6’6 and 280lbs on 247, I think that’s a little bigger than Matayo and Keeley, and he hasn’t even hit a college weight room yet.

HS
Buckeye71's picture

Arik Armstead was 6'7" and 280 coming out of high school. He could be that kinds of guy.

HS
bull1214's picture

The listed heights/weights are questionable for every recruit. The pics I see tell me that matayo just looks bigger than all of them. I considered him a tweener as well that could play inside or out like moore.

HS
Buckeye71's picture

I agree with you. Matayo just looks bigger and more solid. In my mind all these young DEs are capable of making it big. Only time will tell which ones actually do.

HS
Beantown_Buckeye's picture

ND was an early leader and OSU got involved more recently towards the end of last season and is in his top-8. I really haven't heard much about him being a slam dunk to anyone so it seemed a bit wide open. However, I didn't think it was a great sign when he announced he was committing so soon but we'll see.

HS
The Urban Express's picture

Tom Loy picking a player to go to ND is pretty much worthless.  If he picks them to go somewhere else then it's worth paying attention to.  His homerism is strong.

I would love to add Smith, I think him and the TE from Glenville would be a good pairing of TE’s for this class.

Birm expects Sam Wililams-Dixon to be committed sooner rather than later.

Also doesn't expect Ohio State to have to fight much to land the Armstrong brothers.

HS
Beantown_Buckeye's picture

Has anything been said about what changed in the Armstrong bros recruitment? Obviously fairly recently it was questionable which Ohio OL would even receive an offer. Just wasn't sure if there were any specifics about what led to the brothers flipping the script pretty quickly on that narrative.

HS
keith7456's picture

The pair have worked tirelessly in the last year to develop as offensive linemen but also to develop their frames, adding almost 75 pounds apiece since the end of their sophomore seasons, and now, with their senior year ahead of them, they have grown into really solid offensive line prospects.

are the type of players that will grow into really good offensive linemen over the next few years. They're hyper-athletic and still growing and should be an agile 305-310 pounds by the time they're stepping onto a college football field.

They had their Junior Day weekend so as with most big recruiting weekends they are getting momentum. Personally, I like OSU having their important weekends for the Spring Game and in June/July because in the current recruiting climate January just seems very early to me.

HS
SithDealInAbsolutes's picture

Yeah I agree it's early.  Also, I've noticed with Loy, he'll put in CBs for a bunch of these top recruits really early then overtime they'll end up committing elsewhere.

Micah Hudson (#2 WR in 2024) told ON3 last week that his top three schools right now are Ohio State, Texas, and Texas Tech.

“Ohio State is always gonna have good receivers, so I feel like going to a school with other good receivers is gonna drive you even more and push you even more to be great,” Hudson said. “That competition right next to you and those guys are probably going to be wanting the same thing for you. But at the same time, you(‘ve) got a great coach that has been doing this and he knows what he’s doing. His stuff is paying off. You can see that it’s paying off. But also credit to those guys too cause they listen to the coach and invest the time and did what they were supposed to do.”

Interestingly, both Texas and Texas Tech recently lost their WR coaches to new jobs. Meanwhile, Hartline was promoted, so he's not going anywhere.

You may remember Hudson's visit was posted on YouTube back in November.

HS
Beantown_Buckeye's picture

Ah yes, the YouTube video that convinced a bunch of our fans that Hudson didn't want to be there and didn't like OSU. The more rational reasoning was that he's just a quiet, laid-back kid. However, I simply can't imagine that some of our fanbase put a negative spin on something and overreacted. That's just not something I could envision ever happening.

HS
Buckslip's picture

He's a reserved kid from a good family and really hard to read. His mother is a teacher or principle IIRC and he's kind of a momma's boy. The way I understand it is that he'd prefer to stay home if all boxes where checked, but his mother is wanting him to fully explore his options and distance won't be a factor.

OSU offered Alabama QB commit Julian Sayin today. Also Anthony Speca committed to PSU. Knowles needs to pick it up on the LB recruiting front or they need to give him some help there.

HS
Buckslip's picture

I like it. Doubt we can flip him, but putting any pressure on Bama is a good thing. Kid's tape totally reminds me of Stroud and he's from cBad.

A new offer like this also tells you Davis is more or less out of the picture.

HS
pcola_buckeye's picture

Does the 'big board' represent players that tOSU has offered? or is there some other criteria for being on that list?

TIA and sorry for the noob question!

HS
Beantown_Buckeye's picture

Right now it is players offered. For awhile recruits committed elsewhere, or ones not considering or connected to OSU were removed. To be honest, I'm starting to appreciate the former system, as I can see this list starting to get unwieldy as the cycle goes on (if names can't be easily crossed out), and I'd rather see the guys who are still in play for the Buckeyes.

The importance of landing quality offensive lineman was mentioned that there are more 3 stars then 4 and 5 stars in the NFL.  Going off of this 24 class they have 45 listed 4 star lineman and no 5 stars. Which means that would be a tad over one on the 32 NFL teams and you play with 5 lineman. So imagine the importance it is in college football to recruit when you have over 32 teams in the B10 and SEC alone. So getting players like the Armstrongs not so bad when both are top 40 lineman. Rankings are not 100% but another way to view recruiting that position. fwiw

The brothers are living out what was once a dream recruitment as a little kid.

“Growing up as an Ohio State football fan, it’s crazy to be inside and to be able to talk to the coaches like that, instead of looking at it from an aspect of a fan,” Deontae said. “It’s just crazy.”

Just to play devils advocate here; TTUN has NO ONE of note behind McCarthy for 2024, it is the more appealing option for early PT.

HS

He would have to play in that offense though.  And he wouldn't get developed into an NFL QB up there.

HS
JohnnyKozmo's picture

Exactly.  This offense is who they are going to be as long as Harbaugh is there.  They tried Speed in Space...it failed miserably.  They know they can't recruit the athletes they need to run a modern offense, but they can load up on TEs, RBs, and OL.   If he wants to go somewhere to hand it off 50 times a game and throw it 15, then that's his place.

I don’t see it. He was just awful against TCU. Head scratching in fact.

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

The two pick 6’s obviously killed Michigan but other than that, I thought McCarthy played pretty well: 20/34 for 353 yards and two TDs. He also ran 10 times for 52 yards and a TD. Losing by six, Michigan might’ve survived the first but the second proved to be the difference.

Mock drafts aren't worth the paper they are printed on. Just some random journalist in his mom's basement. McCarthy is not an NFL QB. At least not right now. He's a runner not a passer.

HS
Ohiofoosball's picture

Not sure about that. He makes REALLY poor decisions to often right now....its easy to complete some crossers to wide open targets when you run the ball 45 times a game.

HS
Attack51's picture

I agree. Ohio State or Clemson seem much more logical to me (he's always loved Clemson from everything I read, and they just hired Garrett Riley). And even though Matt Weiss bombed the Dante Moore recruitment from all reports, it seemed he and Davis were pretty tight. Seems like Weiss will be gone at Michigan now. There's no reason for any stud QB to go to Michigan

I see there is a fresh Birmology out, with Sam Williams-Dixon.   Interesting...

HS

I don't know how anyone can make a confident prediction until Ohio State and outside organizations determine how they intend to handle NIL/recruiting policy this year. I assume they do intend to make significant changes so that Ohio State has a reasonable shot at a top-3 class. Maybe that's a bad assumption.

HS
nepats11's picture

My way too early picks at each position:

QB: Jadyn Davis

RB: Jordan Marshall

RB: Sam Williams-Dixon

TE: Demarion Witten

WR: JJ Smith

WR: Mylan Graham

WR: Jeremiah McClellan

OL: Ian Moore

OL: Deontae Armstrong

OL: Devontae Armstrong

OL: Jordan Seaton

OL: William Satterwhite

DE: Elias Rudolph

DE: Dylan Stewart or Booker Pickett Jr.

DL: David Stone (still early to say) or Hevin Brown-Shuler

DL: Ernest Willor (if we push hard enough)

LB: Garrett Stover (S now but will grow into LB)

LB: Kristopher Jones or Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa

S: Jordan Johnson-Rubell (still early to say)

S: Vaboue Toure

Nickel/Slot: Miles Lockhart

CB: Bryce West

CB: Aaron Scott

As of now, S and DL are the biggest question marks.

I like Keith’s list. I’ll give it a stab. EDIT: and Nepats11’s list. Just saw it after I posted and we have a lot of the same guys. I was really close to putting Viliamu-Asa in mine, as well. But went with Kris Jones. I’ll take either of those stud LB’s.

QB - Jadyn Davis
RB - Jordan Marshall
RB - Sam Williams-Dixon
TE - Demarion Witten
TE  - Gavin Grover
WR - JJ Smith
WR - Jeremiah McClellan
WR - Mylan Graham
OL - Ian Moore
OL - Devontae Armstrong
OL - Deontae Armstrong
OL - William Satterwhite
OL - Jordan Seaton
DE - Elias Rudolph
DE - Booker Pickett Jr
DL - David Stone
DL -  Jayden Jackson
LB - Garrett Stover
LB - Kris Jones
S - KJ Bolden
S - Jordan Johnson-Rubell
S - Koy Beasley
CB - Bryce West
CB - Aaron Scott
CB - Terhyon Nichols

Agree I usually play along and have my own sheet here at home but may not do it this year. Last year I had more misses than the team. Keith has a nice list and I would go out on a limb and add one of the top OL products from the Big Board and switch out either Wheelwright or Satterwhite. I feel Frye second time around may have a very good haul in 24. Wheelright has been talked a bit so he could stay possibly. I think we get a Georgia TE too the game with the Dawgs may have opened some eyes and they can't get all 4 of the Ga. offers. I'm not sold on Marshall either we keep offering more rb's I think11 to date. They might not be sure either.

Denny

HS
keith7456's picture

Per Birm Marshall is the clear cut #1 RB target. He just isn't a sure thing to pick Ohio State so they can't be left behind the game with others again if he picks a different school.

HS
Buckeyecid's picture

What's the scouting report on Sam Williams-Dixon? I am terrible at judging players on film. I did however identify that Treveyon Henderson was good as difficult as that may have been lol.

HS
gobucks1966's picture

He is not a sure thing that's why I wouldn't have him on my list. Another crazy down vote for predictions. LOL There is no one that can land correctly all the players in the 24 class. If you can go buy some lottery tickets you have a better chance.

Denny

HS
keith7456's picture

#1 target as an Ohio kid. I will believe he ends up at Ohio State until he sign somewhere else.

HS
Buckeye06's picture

He is not a sure thing that's why I wouldn't have him on my list.

So only sure things should be on a prediction list when over half the predictions will likely end up incorrect

HS
gobucks1966's picture

Your right there are no sure bets even with the ones that committed for that matter. I feel Marshall will go to another school and he wouldn't be on my list. The real reason for this crazy talk is people want him so bad and I'm going against that. OSU wanted 3 DE's that were high on the list last year too and didn't get them either.

What’s been up with Stacy Gage lately? At one point he and Marshall were the top 2 targets, and now he’s not even being discussed as an option

HS

Gage is still a top option, staff is going for two RBs this cycle.

HS

Gage is openly pro-Buckeyes, top 3 back in the class.  Must get imo.

I've seen Dixon play in person. He's better than his ranking. I wouldn't be surprised if he has a better college career than Gage or Marshall. Reminds me of Henderson and Williams. That being said I would be happy with any of them. This is a critical year for Alford recruiting wise.

HS
raiderred's picture

Not sure how he can remind you of both as Henderson and Williams styles are complete opposites.

HS
Brutus16's picture

I was talking about them competing once they get to college moreso than running style. Although Williams and Henderson were in different classes, Henderson was supposed to be the next generation back. However, Williams has had the better college career. That is what I am saying Dixon could be compared to Gage or Marshall. Don't be surprised.

Finally got around to watching his tape and he seems sort of like a mix between Dobbins and Miyan, but more of an all-arounder than having one thing that is an elite trait. For example, I don't think he has that elite explosion/agility Dobbins had or quite the power Miyan has, but he has some of both.

That also may speak to one reason why his ranking is where it is, as a lot of guys who tend be ranked very high at RB seem to have an elite trait they can hang their hat on. To my eye he seems like a very good and well-balanced RB though.

Interview with ‘24 AZ DB Miles Lockhart. He is currently scheduling 5 officials for the Spring and wants his decision made by early June. It sounds like Ohio State and Oregon are out in front with Utah, Washington and Arizona State vying for his interest. He also mentions briefly his relationship with current Buckeye Kyion Grayes. By all accounts, it sounds like the Buckeyes are in good position here.

I'm having a real hard time following 2024 recruiting after what happened late in the 2023 early signing period.  Much more than ever before, early commitments seem completely meaningless since other programs will be throwing big NIL offers to our commits late in the cycle and it will just completely open it up again in Nov/Dec 2023.

HS
Buckeye71's picture

The only reason I can think of for a kid to make an early commitment these days is lock in a spot in a class. Commit now and know you can go there if you want,  But of course guys can keep looking and listening to offers, and teams will continue to go after committed guys harder than ever.

HS
jefferson970's picture

It also gives them more leverage for other offers.
