I enjoy it, but I don’t do it every day. I need to have a little free time in the morning since I actually have to pay attention for it.p, and the morning crossword takes precedence.
I do that one, and also sedecordle, which is 16. I find it actually easier than 8 because you end up using so many letters for your first four or five words that the last ten or so are more or less already spelled out or at least you know most of the letters
Part of my wake-up routine is I play the NYT Wordle every morning before I read the Skull Session. My question is why is Wordle spelled with six letters?
"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke
I always open with adieu because it puts four vowels on the board. E and A are the most commonly used letters. One day, adieu will be the word and when it is, I’ll be waiting. My wife randomly picks words. Once she picked the word on her first try. 100% pure luck. Getting it on the second try is 90% luck.
"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke
This eliminates all vowels plus Y in addition to the 4 most common consonants (STRL). I find this allows for consistency. I am in a monthly Wordle pool at work with about 12 other people and in the last 7 months I have finished no worse than 2nd.
Have they used Saban yet? Or Riley? Or Knute? Or sweep or blitz or guard? Or Bucks or Ducks or Bears or Hawks or Irish? Aside from people’s names and team nicknames, are there very many 5-letter words for football? Wordle can be completely random, while CFB Wordle is limited by the topic.
"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke
In Wordle I always open with ADIEU...Generally follow with STORY of fewer than 2 vowels are exposed...works like a charm. Have missed a couple but am riding along at 98% so far.
i started with adieu for months and found it really didn’t help. I usually lead with a word that has both an a and an e in it since they’re by far the most common vowels, something like shame or trade. While I did get today’s CFBordle on the very last try, it was mainly because I like losing less than I dislike that word.
"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke
Been playing CFBordle since finding this thread four days ago...so far, I am four for four, but I will say this,; this is much tougher than Wordle because CFBordle can pull words from player and coach's names, team names, mascots, college towns, football terms, plays and slang, school colors (haha) and even nicknames. Wordle is essentially made up fairly common five letter words; none being proper nouns...
Only because it's actually two words...only way I got it was by exhausting every single other combination I could think of...luckily it didn't accept the 87 final guesses on the sixth try! (might be an exaggeration; not really sure)
Been waiting for this one! October 16th CFBordle answer was the name of the greatest coach in Buckeye history! ...and it wasn't MEYER! (He was the second greatest.)
It took me until guess 6 to get it. I don't love these proper noun names.. But this one was a good one. I know Day wears the classic word mark black hard.. This guy made the black block O hat famous.
I got today’s word in five but purely through the process of elimination and straight up guessing. No spoiler alert here other than having zero familiarity with it, I googled it afterwards and found its connection to college football is so obscure, I’d guess 99% of CFB fans don’t know it.
"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke
Iowa, I was right there with you in the very same boat...After my fifth guess, I had the first two letters and the final two letters in place with NO CLUE as to that middle consonant. I literally tried every single remaining letter from the end of the keyboard to the top; including possible repeats of given letters. Luckily all were rejected until I entered that elusive W! And no, I don't consider this a spoiler because, like you mentioned,, most will have no knowledge of this name and would have either tapped out or run out of guesses by now! I am still at 100% after 29 attempts, but some of these are ridiculously challenging!
Today's word is one of those head scratchers...it IS a college football term...but they, once again, take liberties with the "five letter word" premise.
Today's word/phrase has me stymied...batting 1.000 up to this point but I am on my last guess trying every possible combination I can think of. I have 3 letters so far so it should not be that tough. Luckily it has rejected my last 30 or so attempts. It's gotta be something weird, but I haven't a clue. Will keep trying, I reckon.
NPB is quite right! I got help earlier from my nephew at our family Thanksgiving who actually lives in the Raleigh-Durham area. KENAN Memorial Stadium is the name of the UNC Tar Heels stadium....I thought I tried every possible combination of letters but obviously not. I had the E and the N placed in the 2 and 3 hole along with an A out of position. Would never have figured it out, but obviously nothing I entered would have been accepted either, so I will call it a stalemate! Haha!
I had the AN as green letters in the 4th and 5th spots with an E as a yellow. I tried every letter moving the E from the first to the second spot as I knew it couldn't be third. Eventually I went with using a used letter as a repeat and it worked with KENAN as nothing else was close to making sense.
Yep...I always lead with ADIEU followed by STORY. Helped a bit today, but it was easy enough compared to yesterday! ;-) I would assume that this name has a connection to MOST programs at some point over the years...
Impressive, brother! I know you hit 100 straight last month which is pretty sweet! I am still perfect at 53 straight (got started late) although I got a bit of help from my nephew yesterday. I should feel a bit guilty...but I DO NOT! haha
Today's word was a total unknown slang expression to me...I an O a T and an R and was stumped after three guesses....I just started trying different combos of letters and actually got in on my fourth try...but had never heard this term used. Anyone else struggle with it or am I the only one baffled by this?
Okay… Maybe my focus is off because I’m trying to do this in TV Timeouts of the Ohio State hoops game, but I’m down to two guesses… And only have the letter E. What the heck?
Wouldn’t have gotten that without that hint… But why? Initially thought was oh… Pitt plays their home games there… However, didn’t they change the name of that stadium recently?
Oops...I figured everyone likely had a chance to mess with it by now. Sorry about the spoiler! As for today's word; it could have been the name of a preferred walk-on that was the long snapper for the 1954 Bluffton Beavers for all we know!
I will likely play each day till I miss...I am on a 79 game streak since starting back in October and would like to hit 100, if possible...my luck, tomorrow's word will be something like SMYZK or some such thing!
I almost got shut out on MIAMI a couple days ago...it really wasn't that hard, it's just that the two sets of double letters threw me for a few tries. Today's was a bit weird too...those mascot names can be tricky!
Today's CFBordle is yet another tough one...at least it was for me. I tried all the usual openers and follow-ups but this one was totally out of my college football knowledge realm....however, I did get it on my sixth and final try; but once again I entered dozens of weird combinations of available letters once I had three green ones placed. No spoilers here; just one little hint...it may help to know a little history of the college game! Good luck and let us know if you got it! BTW, once it turned up all green, I did have to Google it!
Until I just googled it… Weird tid bit, but one Christmas I got a book with the Top 50 or 100 College Football Stadiums in it… And after googling it, I then connected the dots. This was deep. But better than stupid “Croot” as a word. Haha.
Yesterday's word was BLAIK...Earl Blaik coached the powerhouse Army football team from 1941-1958 and in 1999 the field at the Army stadium was name Blaik Field in his honor. Now it's on to today's CFB word...much more common!
Hey OATW, I don't specifically remember today's word being used previously, but it seems that WOODY has made used a couple of times...or maybe it was HAYES earlier and then WOODY a week or so ago. Once they are a week or so past they kinda become a vague memory anymore.
True, fair enough. Without giving to much of today’s away… I just recall a stretch there where it felt like we burned through all the mascots/nicknames.
Boys that was close… Guess number six. If you need a hint… Holler. I can give one later this evening. But won’t spoil with a hint this early in the day.
I actually got it in 4 today after a VERY helpful third guess. I am still shaking my head cause I always start with ADIEU and follow with STORY...without fail! Super lucky today!
Then following up with STORY either gives up or eliminates the O and Y as well as the three prominent consonants S, T, and R...by the way, for anyone still sweating today's word; it is NOT limited to just college football! ;-)
Could very well be, but not sure. I have only been working CFBordle since early October so I am still kind of a rookie at this...In fact, I just hit the 100 mark yesterday. WOO HOO!
I play 4-5x/week and I’m up to 128 plays. I’m 99% sure the last 10, maybe more, have been repeats. Today’s answer is definitely a do over so was Verne yesterday and gator and Riley and Kirby and Bliek and Green and I forget now.
Maybe going forward the challenge will be to guess the next day’s answer in advance. My guess for tomorrow is Cinci.
I keep waiting for Saban to pop back up. I know one of the first ones when I started back in August or so was Horns, I imagine we’ll get that one soon too.
That was wild right… We’re 100% recycling words. They need to put me in charge of this. There are too many great 5 letter CFB words to be recycling them. I wish too they’d make them relevant to the day as well. Like last Monday should’ve been JACKS after the South Dakota State Jackrabbits won the FCS title.
That’s why I switched from blitz to bowls in December—I thought there’d be some kind of relevancy. When they’re using names like Woody, Blaik, Kenan, and Reser that go back 40+ years (not to mention Pawla, South Alabama’s female mascot’s name), it shouldn’t be hard to come with 365 of them. It would be a fun job, like coming up with new names for paint colors.
"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke
They are definitely recycling words. Today’s is another we’ve seen before. I used to lead with adieu and then changed it to blitz (because adieu isn’t a football term) and then one day last month I opened with bowls, instead. Of course, the word that day was blitz. So I’m back to starting with blitz and playing the percentages that it’ll eventually come up again. Then again, maybe I’ll lead with South Alabama’s female mascot’s name since it’ll probably rotate around sooner.
"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke
I hear ya, Iowa. I guess I play a little differently in that I need to have a bit of a foundation before I even begin my "CFBword search" so to speak. I build that with ADIEU and STORY. Otherwise, I would likely be off on a tangent near the sidelines somewhere instead of keying in on THE WORD near the goal line! ;-)
I've started to use Readnguy's strategy and it has helped me from beating my head into a wall at guess 5... Today's was good one. I enjoyed the stress getting there. Got it in 5.
The Campbell Camels!!!! I thought they played Clemson recently is the only reason I got this.. I know they were a DI football program.. Thought they were FCS but apparently they're in the Big South... And google wasn't able to pull the Clemson game I was thinking of, so maybe I dreamed it.. But they did play Wake Forrest in the last couple years.
Ahhhh.. I was on guess five... And hit a wall.. I thought for sure this was the place where Buckeye trees were planted for All Americans. When that one didn't work I was like what the heck.
Funny OATW, cause that was my 5th guess today...But then it hit me, as it usually does, on the 2nd or 3rd try of punching one of the remaining letters into the 4 hole!
I got today’s on the third guess simply because while in no way shape or form related to Ohio State, indirectly, here recently it sorta is. I’ll remain that vague unless someone asks for more of a clue.
As for yesterday's word, I was going to ask Jeff if he went after those cookies all alone or with a date? In other words; stag or drag? (booo!) OATW, I got today's on three tries as well. I don't usually guess them that quickly, as a rule!

Haha nice. Also, great “word” for my first day playing this particular version.
have you tried Qourdle?
Do you mean Quordle? The 4 quadrants one?
"Year for what?"
Yeah that’s the one. Oops.
Yeah, I like it a lot. Lost a streak today though. What about you?
"Year for what?"
I enjoy it, but I don’t do it every day. I need to have a little free time in the morning since I actually have to pay attention for it.p, and the morning crossword takes precedence.
Has anyone tried Octordle? That's pretty fun. I do all 3. I do them from my google search, and it dumped all my history last week.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Tailgate Fare Historical Archive
Oh god, quordle is enough for me. 8 sounds like too much.
Forgot about that one. Seemed a little overwhelming. Going to revisit now that I'm managing Quordle.
That's a bummer about your history. Wordle recently set up a way to connect an email account to save histories.
"Year for what?"
I scroll thru the words as I go. I don't do them in order, I do them as they present themselves.

I do that one, and also sedecordle, which is 16. I find it actually easier than 8 because you end up using so many letters for your first four or five words that the last ten or so are more or less already spelled out or at least you know most of the letters
Sixteen sounds like a lot, but I did it and agree.
"Year for what?"
I do Wordle every morning. This new one was fun (is it a Buckeye-developed game or did we just happen to have a Buckeye-themed answer?).
It's for all of college football. Today's was just a good one for Buckeye fans. :)
"Year for what?"
This comment allowed for me to get it by the third try. Appreciate it.
Nice work!

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke
Because the name of the game is a clever derivation of the originator's name (Josh Wardle).
I'm in a group of friends that play Wordle daily - this adds a new twist and I like it.
Always try to look for the positive ........... in the midst of a crisis !!
What are your guys' go-to opener words?
"Year for what?"
Roate or arise, depending on the mood
Roate is interesting, haven't heard of that one. Do you have a go-to second line word after you use roate?
"Year for what?"
Ideally I hit a few letters and begin guessing in earnest, but if I strike out mulch is often the follow up
I used to always used adieu but now I just pick anything.
I started with adieu, too, and liked it. Have since switched to crane and immediately got better results.
"Year for what?"
I think my mom does crane. Or did for a while at least.

What are your guys' go-to opener words?
In the original Wordle I usually start off using these three words first
Depending on the outcome of any given word I usually have enough letters to get me home.
Always try to look for the positive ........... in the midst of a crisis !!
I normally go with stand, prime, and cough.
That's a great triple play as well
Always try to look for the positive ........... in the midst of a crisis !!

Yeah, prioritizing the vowels is solid.
I ended up switching from adieu when I did that WordleBot. Have you seen that?
I've only gotten it in 2 lines twice (I've played 187 games).
"Year for what?"
NYT wants $1.50/week for Wordlebot?!?!? Yea not in my budget.

Yeah, I had free access for like 2 weeks

Is there a photo? I’m on my phone… Can’t view it. I have two guesses left. I’m struggling. Haha.
Crisis averted. I’m pretty smart.
Right on, nice work.

Haha, there's no photo. Sending good vibes so maybe you'll get it.
Fwiw, today's was the most challenging I've encountered since I started last week.

Name of South Alabama's mascot...
1) Don’t lie and say you knew that because 2) as I said:

1. That's a stat you invented
2. There are well over 100 posters on this website, so by your own made-up stat, someone here knows about it
Of course it’s a made up stat. Who’d be doing a survey on something like that? Scroll down to read Readnguy’s response to my question:
Did you know the name of South Alabama’s female jaguar mascot? I doubt it. No one outside the Mobile metro would have any reason to care to know it.

what do you have so far?
where are your yellow and green letters?
Going by the link posted I played and got it in 5 guesses using one letter twice. I don't think it's a word in the english language.
Nice job getting it in 5
"Year for what?"
KENAN is what I got when posting from the link provided in the op.

got it in 4!
A good day for anyone who hasn't tried before...

"Year for what?"

got it in 4!
I had 2 green and 2 yellow after my third guess.
Hey Santa...were you familiar with the term?
Yes
Hmmm...It must be that I'm just watching, reading and listening to the wrong stuff! ;-)
do you know what it's short for?
I do now...I googled it! LOL
Short for "recruit"
Did they really use “Croot”… I mean seriously? Just ruined my streak with that one. UGH!
yeah they did.
Sorry about your streak.
I sure do hope we win this bowl game on NYE… If you haven’t guessed 12/19’s… This hint should help!
Okay… Maybe my focus is off because I’m trying to do this in TV Timeouts of the Ohio State hoops game, but I’m down to two guesses… And only have the letter E. What the heck?
A bit tricky...think ketchup!
Wouldn’t have gotten that without that hint… But why? Initially thought was oh… Pitt plays their home games there… However, didn’t they change the name of that stadium recently?
that was perhaps too good a hint as I got it in 1 guess.
Oops...I figured everyone likely had a chance to mess with it by now. Sorry about the spoiler! As for today's word; it could have been the name of a preferred walk-on that was the long snapper for the 1954 Bluffton Beavers for all we know!
No worries, I don't play the college version unless I see a comment in this thread.
I will likely play each day till I miss...I am on a 79 game streak since starting back in October and would like to hit 100, if possible...my luck, tomorrow's word will be something like SMYZK or some such thing!
My College version streak is five, my normal version streak is 317.
317 is awesome. 293 is my max. "Piney" tripped me up - still mad.
"Year for what?"
Nice! I started Wordle back in the summer and missed a couple words early on...Once I found my stride, I am 142 for 144.
Well at least today's was fun
"Year for what?"
It’s a repeat, too. Pretty sure it’s the word that started this thread.

"Year for what?"
An ode. Would’ve had it on the third guess if I hadn’t first guessed that puke from up north.
Hmm
I almost got shut out on MIAMI a couple days ago...it really wasn't that hard, it's just that the two sets of double letters threw me for a few tries. Today's was a bit weird too...those mascot names can be tricky!
That was a tough one it took every guess. Your clue didn’t help at all.
Hmm
Today's CFBordle is yet another tough one...at least it was for me. I tried all the usual openers and follow-ups but this one was totally out of my college football knowledge realm....however, I did get it on my sixth and final try; but once again I entered dozens of weird combinations of available letters once I had three green ones placed. No spoilers here; just one little hint...it may help to know a little history of the college game! Good luck and let us know if you got it! BTW, once it turned up all green, I did have to Google it!
Thanks yeah I had to Google it too after I got it. Tough one.
"Year for what?"
I luckily pulled it out too… But likewise was unfamiliar with that at all.

Right. I always find it difficult when a letter is repeated. That’s all I’ll say in that, unless someone wants more. Haha.
I actually got it in 4 today after a VERY helpful third guess. I am still shaking my head cause I always start with ADIEU and follow with STORY...without fail! Super lucky today!
Nice work. I may have to start with ADIEU. I love knocking out all but one vowel.
Then following up with STORY either gives up or eliminates the O and Y as well as the three prominent consonants S, T, and R...by the way, for anyone still sweating today's word; it is NOT limited to just college football! ;-)
Just got today's word in three.
Same. This feels like another repeat. Swore we had this before.
Could very well be, but not sure. I have only been working CFBordle since early October so I am still kind of a rookie at this...In fact, I just hit the 100 mark yesterday. WOO HOO!
! Nice work.
"Year for what?"
Got it on the second guess. First time for that.
Hmm
Got it in 4
I play 4-5x/week and I’m up to 128 plays.
Ryan Day is killing it!
I keep waiting for Saban to pop back up. I know one of the first ones when I started back in August or so was Horns, I imagine we’ll get that one soon too.
Lo and behold yesterday was horns.
Hmm

Whew...Today's about got me, but once I got it I felt like kicking myself. Took six guesses and a lot of staring at it...but then it hit me!

Took me a while too
"Year for what?"
Hmmm...not sure of the connection today's word has to college football; but okay. Do community colleges have football programs? LOL
Maybe, TAMU should refer to Tunisian Arabian & Mesopotamian University football instead of Texas A&M University football!
Always a tough word on hump day.
Hmm
Now that's funny, Jeff! But how does CAMEL fit into the college football scene?
The Campbell Camels!!!! I thought they played Clemson recently is the only reason I got this.. I know they were a DI football program.. Thought they were FCS but apparently they're in the Big South... And google wasn't able to pull the Clemson game I was thinking of, so maybe I dreamed it.. But they did play Wake Forrest in the last couple years.
Wake Forest has a tie-in to today's word...
A little too much info in the clues today. 2nd guess.
Hmm
My bad, Jeff...no more spoiler talk from me! Will wait till new word is posted before engaging in any banter on the previous offering...
I'll second what Readnguy said. My bad. That being said.. Still working on today's. I've had to revisit every hour or so at work.
Took me 6 today
"Year for what?"
I don’t mind some clever clues. It was just too easy with the grove and the fourth letter. No harm though!
Got lucky today on the second try. As a reward I had some Famous Amos cookies.
Hmm
I would comment, but I promised...No more spoiler talk!
