CFB as we have known it is dead.

Maybe in Big 5 FBS, but perhaps not in all those in FBS.

For example, what effect does it have at Ivy League schools, which do not offer athletic scholarships?  How much NIL is there for the ne'er-do-wells in the Big 5 leagues?

What about FCS, Div II and Div III?

Seems to me that some schools, where they are more interested in cash & championships than educating college athletes (e.g., SEC with 1 year schollies, as opposed to B1G's 4-year schollies), are the ones driving this change. It appears that institutions with integrity will lose recruits to those with fewer scruples.

One wonders if it's poor Buckeye conditioning:

Playing tenaciously on defense and little movement (resting?) on offense.

    or

Playing with great energy on offense and little movement (resting?) on defense.

Gotta be able to have great energy on both ends, even if it means substituting more extensively and more often.

These guidelines are fine, or would be if they were enforced, but enforcement is spotty.

I suspect that a lot of folks who read 11W stories avoid the comments section for all the nastiness & negativity that happen regularly there, as I often do. What used to be a forum where intelligent opinions and insights were exchanged is now a place where personal attacks on coaches AND athletes are constant, as well as insults against other posters.

And sometimes it seems that some 11W staff identify more with the whiners than with the great majority of Buckeye fans. And those writers succumb to the negativity in their columns. Sad.

Key never rebounds on the D end either.

Perhaps that's your impression, but through 15 games, Sports Reference says Key averages 3.1 offensive rebounds & 4.7 defensive rebounds per game.

What becomes problematic and pretty damn toxic is when fans think they’re owed something for their devotion. And yet because they’ve invested so much of who they are in this thing any failure is seen as an attack and met with anger and awfulness.

Sadly true, and witnessed almost daily on 11W comments.

OTOH, it's good to see someone on 11W staff address the situation, and admit sometimes going over the (perceived) line.

I'm reluctant to think that the Buckeyes are not as good as we thought. The issue seems to be between the ears: insufficient mental toughness or to Hoops IQ.

They could still learn from their coaches, but more likely from veteran players, like Justice Sueing. But it seems his groin injury has eroded his toughness and poise. Key can lead—if and when he's healthy.

So it may be up to veterans but recent additions McNeil & Likekele to lead.

Brice is a Freshman, and though he is talented, he sometimes plays like a freshman. And sometimes guys just have bad games.

Minnesota defended well against OSU's top scorers: Brice hit only 6 of 18 shots (33%) and Sueing hit only 4 of 13 (31%).

Comment 12 Jan 2023

Minnesota’s game plan is to slow down OSU’s top scorers, and they have limited Sensabaugh to 3 of 10 FG’s and Sueing to 1 of 6.

Conversely, Minn’s top scorers are leading their squad: Garcia has 12 points and Cooper has 7. The duo is 7 of 13 FG’s (54%), which trails their team’s 55.6%.

Buckeyes must play better Defense to win in the B1G.

Oh, and the Bucks must shoot better than 35%, as they did in 1st half.

Comment 12 Jan 2023

So it seems that the players became so frustrated with sportswriters (picking All-Pro teams) that they set aside money to pick their own All-Pro team.

Makes one wonder about the value of the AP college polls are in both football and basketball.

Comment 08 Jan 2023

The Buckeyes must play better if they want to win in the B1G, especially on the road. They need to be better at poise, ball-handling, defense and rebounding, particularly defensive rebounding.

Will they learn from this?

They can . . . if they work on fundamentals. Doing so should help their poise.

Comment 08 Jan 2023

Bucks need to play with poise rather than emotion. And do the little fundamental things.

Until they do, they are not good enough to win consistently.

Comment 08 Jan 2023

The disparity in rebounds can be understand by looking at Maryland's 9 offensive rebounds (9 in one half!).  Maryland is not that tall. But they hustle.

Bucks need to get better at fundamentals, and this is a biggie.

Comment 08 Jan 2023

Need to be able to break [the press] and make teams pay for it.

Agreed, first beat the press and then burn them.

Hope all the Buckeyes learn and gain confidence against it.

Rothstein’s rankings of 21st Century Buckeyes are just one guy’s opinion.

I would make at least a couple changes, including Deshaun Thomas at 10 (moving up Keita & EJ),  Lighty at 12 (ahead of Buford).

It would be interesting to see Thad Matta's rankings — but he'd probably never do so.
