This would be great. OSU basketball is awful now. Barely worth following. Year of excitement, controversy, and attention--and maybe a better basketball team would be great. And it helps the Buckeyes have a higher profile in general, which will even help football. High school football players play and watch and follow basketball.

Take away his name, and not a single person on this board would have a problem signing a promising player from California.

Pro-style QBs can never turn down the NFL. Too much money. But market for RBs or similar undervalued positions might change a lot. NFL RBs get chewed up and are out of the league. If you are a star college RB projected to be a second round pick, you might as well stay in college and see if you can make $5 million NIL and then try to go pro. . .

This also just makes me more upset about TSUN. TSUN was not good but they killed us. The tragedy of the season is not that we failed to beat an amazing UGA team it is that we got destroyed by a mediocre TSUN team.

Comment 09 Jan 2023

It is the TSUN game that is sickening. Had we beat TSUN and then lost to UGA in a close game in the semis or final, fine. Would have been rough but still a good season. Instead, we ended up this season with a big flat zero. . . Really upset with Knowles and also with the shoes worn by our DBs.

He is our own Stetson Bennett. In some cases, a 22 year old who was lightly recruited will be better than a 19 year old 4 or 5 star. This happens in college basketball all the time. A team of seniors who will never make the NBA beats a team like Duke or Kentucky full of super-talented but inexperienced players who will make the NBA . . .. You need both type of players. I don't want to have a team made up entirely of guys like this but I am happy to have some of these guys. . . . That said, I do marvel about how recruiting rankings are based on a kid's size at age 16 or 17 when he might be totally different physically at 21 or 22. Some kid is 5'9, 140 as a high school junior and never gets ranked but four years later is 6'0, 190.

Comment 07 Jan 2023

Ohio guy. Early enrollee. Buckeye fan, These types of kids stay and develop and are much better recruiting pulls than higher ranked kids from out of state.

Get more Cleveland and Cincinnati kids! Not an accident that Glenville guys were on the great teams of years past. Not an accident that Mathew’s and Miyan went to same school.

This is nonsense and I love it. TSUN deserves it for their holier than thou attitude despite a fairly standard (at best) history of NCAA violations and bad actors. Fab 5. Brendon Gibbons. Frank Clark. Bo. They say this is BS but everything against the Buckeyes was legit. Screw their hypocrisy.

Tattoo-Gate was insane in hindsight. Players traded their own personal property for tattoos. There is no moral or  NCAA difference between trading for tattoos or trading for jelly beans. And now we all agree that it was immoral for the NCAA and Big 10 and OSU to be making money off of Pryor and others but not let them trade trophies for tattoos. ….. But the TSUN folks just can’t bring themselves to say that the Tressel stuff was bs and so is the Harbaugh stuff. They will say that Tressel was about lying not the underlying violation he lied about. But then with Harbaugh they will say the lying doesn’t matter because the underlying violation wasn’t a big deal.

Pryor drove a Nissan and Tressel rigged a football camp raffle and the players traded gold pants for tattoos! Pure evil!

Long story short, sounds like Harbaugh did nothing wrong but I hope that sanctimonious whiner gets a lifetime ban,

Not even the worst loss for Buckeyes in past six weeks. TSUN was orders of magnitude worse.

Comment 01 Jan 2023

I think Harbaugh ends up in NFL. A lot easier job than college--just very hard to get. And I think Harbaugh's value is sky high right now because of experience. I might be biased here as Browns fan, but I think/hope that the trend of hiring 35 year old so-called offensive geniuses has cooled a bit. . . . But I think that there will be little smoke, even if there ends up being a fire. I think Harbaugh is going to only take a job if it is given to him without really an interview. And that could happen. But he won't repeat last year.

. . . I hate Harbaugh. But I wouldn't mine him to replace Stefanski!

Growing up in 80s Midwest, the one soccer name everyone knew was Pele. . . Whenever a soccer ball was thrown out in gym class, someone would start doing some fancy dribbling and announce that they were Pele. It was like the "Be Like Mike" commercials but the difference was that we only knew the name of one soccer player, whereas every kid knew 50 other players besides Jordan.

The team needs to have fun. I mean it. When was the last time Day or Stroud or the team looked happy? The 2014 run started in the dumps after Virginia Tech. No one was happy. And then we kept winning. And then Cardale came in. He played with joy. The team played with joy. . . . The Buckeyes against TSUN looked tough and serious and mean. But they also looked tight and stressed . . . TSUN, I hate to say it, was having fun. . . . Unfortunately, I think Day and Stroud are both have a bit of Debby Downer in them and so I don't see this changing. In every picture at a recruit's house, Day's smile seems pasted on.

Comment 27 Dec 2022

I hate to say this but I think the column next year needs to be threat level Ohio State--i.e. the threat we pose to TTUN. Once we get the rivalry back on track, we can flip it back to TTUN's threat to us. I just don't see how next year the TTUN threat to the Buckeyes is not extreme every week--even if TTUN loses every week by 100!

Comment 27 Dec 2022

I don't want him to go back b/c I think the only way he goes back is if he wins it all this year. Then he can go out on top, which would be very unpleasant for Buckeye fans.

I hope he stays at TSUN for many more years, never wins a national championship, and loses 75%-100% of games to Buckeyes.

This said, as a Browns fan, I would be all in on him replacing Stefanski and just running Nick Chubb all game.

Love it. We want toughness and people who respect rivalries-Massillon works for me! Without knowing a thing about this kid, my guess is that he is a tough kid with a chip on his shoulder and no sense of entitlement. Opposite of Railoa etc. Now we need some 5 stars from California too, but this balance is good!

Mazi Smith's gun charges ignored. Cade McNamara and Eric All mistreated. Abandoning recruiting in favor of the transfer portal. Howard's temper. One of the biggest scandals in NCAA history. Brendan Gibbons. Frank Clark. Bo himself. Harbaugh's antics. Hoke's concussion errors.

I don't think TSUN is worse than anybody else. A lot of people represent TSUN, not all are perfect, some do bad things. OSU has certainly had its share of bad actors. College football is not for the faint-hearted. The portal is fine. The Fab 5 deserved the money. I just don't think TSUN is better than anybody else.

But we all know how TSUN would respond to any of this conduct if it happened at OSU or MSU. Gosh when MSU used the transfer portal, TSUN acted as if they were murdering puppies.

No one else in the conference drips with such unfounded moral superiority. And, sorry to tell you this Ann Arbor, but the actual academic powerhouses in this country don't consider you to be in the same league. . . . And perhaps your recent football success is because you are cheating. After all, whenever the Buckeyes won, it was because O$U must be cheating.

The apparent mood of the fanbase (myself included) is amazing. We are two games away from this being one of the top three seasons in Buckeye history in the last 50 years. If we beat GA and then, hopefully, TSUN, this will be one for the ages. Do we deserve this chance? No! But we have it. And if we take it and just win two measly games, this will be glorious. No one will care about missing on a few recruits and no one will care about losing to TSUN (provided it is TSUN we beat in the championship game).

Let's do this! Of course, if we lose the coin toss, I am going to start blaming CJ and Day for being cowards and deem this the worst season in Buckeye history.

Comment 20 Dec 2022

We are worse than Georgia but we have a decent chance of winning--about 33%.

Fans treat college football as if there is an unalterable hierarchy of teams. This is because of rankings and the limited number of games and the historical lack of a playoff. And for Ohio State against the Big 10, there really is an unalterable hierarchy in which most teams have only a 5% chance of beating us.

But when it is a good team against a great team, the good team can beat the great team. Like a 6-10 team in the NFL playing a 10-6 team. Or Penn State playing Ohio State.

Unfortunately, we are Penn State in this comparison. So let's hope for a freak block kick returned for a touchdown.

CJ will be a better NFL QB than college QB. In college, you need emotional, gutsy players at QB--Bayer Mayfield. But in the NFL you have to be able to make the throws. And in the NFL everyone is a professional and is playing as hard as possible because they don't want to lose their jobs so the QB does not have to be a rah-rah guy. The other players will try to pick up the mood of a young sulking QB because they all need to win from a professional perspective and the only players who make it to the NFL are ballers. And the coach will simply not tolerate a QB who sulks too much.

CJ Stroud will have a long NFL career. Of the four QBs remaining in the playoff, he will have the best NFL career by far. But if I had to pick a QB for the college playoff, he would be my 3rd or 4th choice.

In addition, I bet CJ grows up in a few years. In two to three years we will be reading an article about how CJ struggled to compete at Ohio State but then grew up under the mentorship of his coach and older players in the NFL. The article will show a picture of CJ sulking after the TSUN loss and beaming with confidence after some NFL playoff win.
