Now where is the thread about Desmond Howard's mother?

Comment 18 Jan 2023

That's a good comparison. Miller's teams were solid but rarely rose above a level of good. He recruited decently but wasn't exactly getting the Michael Jordan caliber players.

Holtmann isn't working here and Ohio State can do much much better. I know we can't fire every coach after two seasons just because they haven't won the tournament, but this far in it's pretty clear to see that the Buckeyes now are solid and rarely rising the level of play. We need a change for sure.

I remember when the NHL came to town, The Other Paper proposed the name the Columbus Mad Cows. (A take on the old joke that Columbus is just a cow town.) I always thought that was a hilarious name. But no, Columbus couldn't support an NFL team.

First, Ohio State would NEVER let that happen. The reason the Schottenstein Center exists is that it was Ohio State's attempt at pulling state funding to keep the NHL out of town. (Nationwide was built with mostly private money.) Gee called in every favor he could to take away stadium funding money from the city and kept it for the university.

Secondly, the Buckeyes rule the roost. I know going to an Ohio State game on Saturday and then to an NFL game on Sunday sounds fun, but people only have so much money. And it's not like all of those 100,000+ people in Ohio Stadium are all from Columbus. There are a lot of Cleveland and Cincinnati people there who have their own NFL games to attend the next day if they so choose. It's just too much market oversaturation.

I think if you are putting someone in to play in a game, they should be going out there to play. For a quarterback, that means throwing the ball. McCord and Brown should both have had chances to throw the ball this season and generally run the offense as intended. This also helps develop the third and fourth string receivers as well.

Knowles' system of adding confusion to the offense by disguising the defense is great. However, at some point, if you are going to have three safeties on the field, maybe keep one of them back in pass coverage sometimes? It's great stopping the other teams with tackles for losses, but it really doesn't matter if we are going to keep giving up long easy touchdown passes.

Also, if you are playing safeties on the field and just using them as linebackers, all you are doing is playing three undersized linebackers.

I like the idea as an exercise, but there is no way Kingsbury would take an OC role in college football anywhere. He could walk into almost any head coaching job in college, or could be a coordinator in the NFL.

I think it was Birm who said something along the lines of Ohio State boosters at this point would rather donate the money and see their name on a building than spend it on a recruit, and I get that logic. A building will last a long time, and results from bidding on recruits is mixed at best.

Ultimately federal law might need to be involved. Gene Smith mentioned they wanted clarification from the state of Ohio, but that's not going to help because states in the SEC will just keep things set at giving schools carte blanche to do whatever they want.

Yeah... if Knowles could just worry more about keeping our DBs somewhere in the vicinity of opposing wide receivers that would be great. You don't need to steal that many signs when you know you just have to run a fly rout on every play and wait for us to blow the coverage.

In the NFL, there have always been teams that built through the draft and those that built through free agency. This now applies to college football as well.

I think the early trend here is that when players come open in the portal, people want to overrate them just because they are on the market. I was never sure why I was supposed to be salivating over some guy that was so awesome that he got recruited to play in Rhode Island. I get it, sometimes players don't get properly graded and every 5-star athlete isn't going to make it, but I think Day is right. You can't go chasing every guy that pops into the portal just because they are there.

Ohio State talks about the brotherhood, and maybe it sounds cliche but the players seem to be buying into that bigtime. If you are going to preach brotherhood, you can't be tossing randos into the locker room left and right and hoping it all works out.

Good luck and God speed on your recovery. Prayers up for Avery in this challenging time. I know people who have been treated at the Spielman breast cancer center and raved about the quality and compassion of care, and I am sure all the other related cancer treatment areas are just as strong and capable.

The issue here is the Ohio State's approach has been "What are the rules? We need to understand what we are doing before we overstep a boundary and potentially get in trouble." The SEC stopped caring what the NCAA had to say a decade ago. As soon as they saw the NIL opening they started throwing as much money around as possible.

We need to stop worrying about the NCAA defining what the NIL is, because they never will. It's time to open the checkbooks and make sure we keep our seat at the table when it comes to 5-star recruits.

I agree with Klatt. That's why The Game this year was so befuddling to me... I didn't recognize the team on the field. We had never run that defense all year long, and suddenly we decide to play cover 0.

Hopefully we get back to playing the way we need to play against Georgia.

It's got to be a tough call... the player will always want to be on the field but who is 80% of Treveyon better than a 100% Dallan Hayden?  Tre has battled all year. I don't question his toughness or his commitment and neither should anyone else.

This is one reason I am not heartbroken to see Kevin Wilson leave. He is a great offensive mind but we need a new voice. I'd love us to bring in someone from the NFL level because a lot of team's like *ichigan have been using NFL schemes to defend against us. He definitely needs to bring in someone new and hand over in-game play calling to that person.

I agree with this 100%. Reading the comments on President Davis "resigning" was an absolute nightmare, but we have a large fanbase, and breaking news... there are a large number of idiots across America. Many of those idiots are Ohio State fans, mantyare Michigan fans and so on. You can't quit every venue where you encounter internet-based morons because there is no such place in the world. Sorry, just my two cents.

Thank you for posting this! I remember when Belichik was run out of Cleveland because of what a horrible coach he is. And before you say he only won with Brady, the Patriots have no QB right now and have no business having a winning record.

Comment 28 Nov 2022

This is probably the best take on the "Fire the coach" thing I have seen. Day can still have his hands all over the offense in terms of design and gameday prep, but during the game it might be better to have someone take that off his hands.

Comment 28 Nov 2022

How many balls did CJ drop Saturday? Was he playing corner during the game? How many penalty yards did he cost us? What did you want him to do Saturday that he didn't do?

Comment 28 Nov 2022

CJ Stroud wasn't out there dropping passes. As far as I know, he wasn't on "coverage" on any of the long Wolverine touchdowns. He committed 0 penalties. What do people expect him to do, play every position on the field? He was accurate and delivered the ball where it needed to go. I won't point a finger at CJ unless someone shows me game film of misreads or wide open receivers he didn't throw to. Until then, miss me with all this "he's not a winner" BS. He probably played the best game of any Buckeye I saw on Saturday.
