That's a great way to describe the situation.

The schools are making money off the NIL of all of their athletes, in a collective sense.  The "brand" of a school has no clout if the product (team, players) has no draw.

An analogy would be a record label -- you don't get distribution or broadcast deals if all of your bands suck.   But if you have a great band, all the musicians should get a cut of the revenue -- not just the frontman.

This site already has a mechanism for getting rid of trolls:  Downvote until the post is grayed out into illegibility.   It's simple.

A bigger and more recent problem is that there will be 20+ responses to a single troll post in which the responders start turning against each other.  It's usually some form of a holier-than-thou flame war, where the original troll can just sit back and laugh.

Just downvote.  Resist the urge to reply.  The mods can better do their job when there are fewer inflammatory posts.

Cautiously optimistic. We don't need another Kerry Coombs.

I look at it somewhat similarly.

Maybe Coombs would have been a good defensive coordinator if he had cut his teeth doing that some place else than at Ohio State?  I don't think he (or Day) fully grasped the reality that Ohio State always has a big target on its back -- Every opposing offensive coordinator will show no mercy whatsoever if they feel that Ohio State has a weakness tactically or strategically.  A win is a career highlight on their resume.

This is where I'm hopeful-but-somewhat wary of Hartline being the OC:  On the bright side, there's the fact that he's probably the best young position coach in all of college football.  On the darker side, he will need to show that he can play chess against (and continually outwit) multiple seasoned defensive coordinators.

What I hope happens is that Hartline already understands this and  becomes a great manager, instead of an instant hero.   Leverage the wisdom on hand (e.g. Day, Frye, Alford and every other veteran coach) before diving into the deep side of the pool.

Those two quick scores appeared to shock Day. While Ohio State was up by 3 at the half, the game was already over.

That was the feeling I had at halftime.  TTUN doesn't do anything special -- They are just patient and stick to their game plan.   That's especially true if they're only down by 3.   No panic.

It seemed like Day's Plan A was to jump up early and force TTUN to play catch up.  It didn't seem to me that there was a Plan B for a close game.   We looked disorganized and desperate in the 2nd half.

completely change their tendencies and get more creative

I see it differently.  I hope that our coaches stop being cute and focus the team and philosophy around an identity (e.g. running the damn ball)   Stop trying to change the call at the LOS every play.  Stop trying to "make all the playmakers happy".  Don't abandon the game plan and get into a shootout just because the other team scored.  Play with discipline and patience.

That's a great point.  Facing UGA first is a good thing.  OSU is clearly the underdog and can play loose.

Part of the reason we lost to TTUN last week is because Day and Knowles got too cute / complex with the game plan.  Having a month to overthink things and plot revenge could actually make things worse.

Also, If we make it past UGA there will be fare less college football hype on TV in general, as the NFL takes center stage in January.

“Hartline is not prepared to be a head coach yet. There is a progression that usually needs to happen for someone to be successful as a head coach. Hartline hasn’t followed that path yet”

Totally agree. Being a HC is a totally different job than a coordinator. If Hartline wants to be a HC he should follow the path of Urban Meyer. Go from position coach to HC of a small program. Learn the ropes of running an entire operation - If that is what he wants to do. Often times coordinators don’t make great HCs. See Day, Ryan.

^This.

Great coordinators can make terrible HCs.  Coordinators can often be "player's coaches", which can hamper their ability to set the tone/attitude for the whole program.  They also bring a bias for their style of play calling, even if it's obsolete at that point.

Ryan Day at this point reminds me a lot of Norv Turner and the Washington Redskins.
