This offense is a hot mess. If Brice isn't shooting, they have no clue. It's like all of a sudden every team figured out that they need to switch every screen and stop the penetration, and the offense just stalls. There are very few easy baskets or plays that get open looks or guys freed up to draw a defender and dish under the basket.

At this point, I would take Sean Miller in a heartbeat. You gotta think he would love to get back to a bigger stage. Watched X last night and even though they lost, the offense and energy were impressive.

2-pt shooting percentage last 4 games:

  • Thornton 5-20
  • McNeill 3-15
  • Ice 2-12

Thornton also has only 6 AST to go with 6 TOs. Sueing has 10 TOs and only 17 boards (Brice also has 10 TOs but 33 boards).

I would like to see Holden take Ice's time and play closer to 30/game, Gayle should take some of McNeill's minutes and the offense needs to either push in transition or get Thornton going to the basket more where he can dish. 1.5 AST per game for the PG playing 30 minutes seems absurd, he should be at least twice that. As a team you've got 31 AST and 40 TOs in the last 4 games, which is atrocious.

Time for more Holden, less Sueing. You just can't go 3-10 with only 3 boards in 34 minutes as a starting senior swing player. His shooting slump is horrendous and he's singlehandedly cost this team at least 2 games. I don't understand why the immediate response is to blame the coach when the team doesn't shoot well, but at some point the coach needs to bench players who aren't earning their keep.

I just don't get too worked up about basketball losses. Everybody loses. Nobody likes losing to the last place team but the bottom line is Brice, Sueing, Thornton and McNeil went 17 for 50. Against MD it was rebounding and stupid fouls. Purdue and UNC were coin flips. We have not been blown out (yet). Maybe coming but our worst loss is still 11 points in Hawaii.

We have a young team and the team has stayed young for a while because people left or went pro. Sueing didn't play last year. McNeil has never played with any of these guys.

People forget that Thad's best runs in 2010, 11, 12 and 13 were bolstered by good players who stayed:

  1. 2010 - Turner, Jr; Buford, So; Lighty, Jr; Diebler, Jr.; Lauderdale, Jr.
  2. 2011 - Buford, Dieber, Lighty plus 2 really good freshman Sullinger and DeShaun
  3. 2012 - Buford, Sr; Sullinger, DeShaun, Craft year 2
  4. 2013 - Sullinger, Jr; DeShaun, Jr; Craft, Jr; plus a bunch of SOs

Duke, UNC and Kentucky are not immune from the losses that come with constantly turning the roster over. Neither is Ohio State.

Zen was actually a pretty good LT prospect coming out of HS. Hopefully he's ready and if Frye moves Jones back to C like most expect, then the interior will be fine. I'll be more concerned if James is starting at C because I'm just not sure he's big enough. Size is fine but he was only like 260 in HS and how much can you really add before losing your ability to move athletically.

Interested to see what the tackle position looks like and what Justin Frye does in year 2.

George Fitzpatrick could play or backup at RT, with Fryar, and then Michalski & Tegra at LT.  Will Toutant progress or get passed over by Montgomery?

Fryar came in as a guard/center, but he's projected to start at RT. Is Jakob James the answer at C if Wypler leaves? He might be good, but he came in at 260 and apparently has already added 25 pounds. I don't know that he could add another 15-20.

So if Wypler leaves, you could see Tegra or Michalski at LT, Jackson, Fryar at C, Vimahi, & Fitzpatrick or Montgomery at RT.

I'll be shocked if Wypler comes back, he has nothing left to do to improve his draft stock. Especially the way he played in the semi. Matt Jones could probably get better with another year but I'll assume he's gone too.

I'll go Fryar at LT, Jackson at LG, with Vimahi at RG and Tegra at RT or possibly Zen. Center would be James or Hinzman.

Watching the replay of the last play, and Okpara sets a decent pick for Sensabaugh but still gets pushed backwards, and then for some reason Thornton dribbles towards Brice which brings Thornton's defender into Sensabaugh's space. Thornton needed to stay wide and just pass to Brice at the 3 pt line. Brice was going to get an open look at 3 if Thornton stays wide or he could dribble-drive on Edey.

Sueing and McNeill are hanging behind the 3 pt line, so I'm guessing Brice was going to curl and then take Edey one on one, which makes sense because Edey is slow as shit. There's nobody else in the lane and it would have worked if Thornton plays it right, but he sort of tripped and lost the handle on the ball right before the pass, which caused him to take a couple steps towards Brice to recover. And by that time, the guy that Okpara picked is also back in the scrum. Didn't like it when I watched it live, but I'm OK with the play design because it gets Brice one on one with a defender and going to the hoop and Edey, while really tall, can't move that well.

Okpara 30 minutes and only 2 fouls, that's good.

Maybe that's what Day meant when he said he would call it again, just wished it had been executed better. He's clearly not going to call out CJ at the podium for failing to notice that EE had nobody guarding him when he came in motion. That's a play action handoff with roll-out to the right if CJ reads it correctly.

So the run would go left, to the weak side, after the motion guy brings a defender with him. If no defender trailing the motion guy, then should be no handoff.

This is my theory on Day and Stroud. Every one of Day's plays can probably go two or three ways depending on what the QB sees. And Stroud is still, for all his athletic ability, a work in progress on the identification of which option works best.

I think moving from 3 corners to 2 corners really affected his PT likelihood.  If he had a chance to start at slot corner, with Burke and Hancock outside, then maybe he stays. But it seems the coaches like Hancock better and Burke takes up the other spot.  Totally understandable.

Wypler has nothing left to prove, I think he'll go get paid. Eich as well if he gets a good draft grade.
