To me Thornton is the key to how the balance of the season plays out. His game has fallen the fastest of anyone on the team, could it be injuries that he is trying to play through, hit the freshman wall or teams have him figured out by now, I have a feeling it is a combination of all three. Sensabaugh is going to shoot, he is going to try and create his own offense, he is also the second best rebounder by numbers. Him and Zed should be in double double range nearly every game.  Sensabaugh can create his own shot from nearly anywhere on the court.

They also have to figure out how to keep McNeil involved, he has good range and can get a shot off by himself at times. The team still has a negative assist to turnover ratio in the conference. Team defense has to improve as well, far too many breakdowns by individuals leading to easy shots.

Three games in a row shooting under 38% won't win you many games either.

Another issue that is running in a parallel lane to the NIL issues is the National Labor Relations Board indicating that ( NLRB) that student athletes are employees of the school, conference and the NCAA.

Don't expect any help from Congress, they have been well aware of the issue for over a decade and have done nothing, the coaches aren't going police themselves. Coaches are going to stretch the rules as far as possible, some will cross the line, intentionally or without intent. What I see is more schools spending more time working the portal and less time and money recruiting high school kids. Most teams have limited resources and you are recruiting an older player who has practiced and played the college game for a year or two instead of following a kid for three or four years and all the time and effort required. You are getting a better vetted candidate as well, they will have had time to transition from high school life to college life. The elite of the elite will always be recruited by the big boys with huge staffs and nearly unlimited budgets, it is the second and third tier players that I am referring to.

One of the few ways this gets cleaned up is somebody going to a very public trial, convicted and sent to prison for years if the commit some type of fraud against players

I thought I was pretty clear when I said that May was a guy to keep an eye on but probably not ready for a B1G job. I agree that he needs to build his resume against with more games against higher quality opposition and sustain it. One problem that a team like FAU runs into, in past years they have been a easy win paycheck game, now he is building a good team and the better teams may not want to schedule them and risk a close game or loss at home.

We don't see Holtmann scheduling tough non conference games at home with any regularity, the better opponents come in as part of a conference vs conference competition.

Here's a name to keep an eye on, Dusty May currently at Florida Atlantic, 17-1, winners of 16 in a row and have the program in the 25 for the first time ever. Probably not ready for a B1G job but he ha taken a doormat to top of Conference USA.over the course of five years

He got his start as a manager for Bobby Knight in his IU days, not a bad guy to have as an early mentor

Third game in a row shooting under 38%, is that on the coach, the players, the system, I'll venture it is a combination of all three. The system doesn't push tempo so trying to create space and trying to get the defense out of position. Nope, let's walk the ball up the court all night and run the same sets all night long. The Nebraska center gets in foul trouble yet they can't modify the offense to exploit that mismatch. Far too many defensive breakdowns yet again.

Another slow start on the offensive end with pathetic shooting, maybe they need to revisit the pregame routine, change up something because what they are doing now is not getting them off to a good start. In some respects they have been lucky that they are not playing against good teams or they would be run out of the building in the first ten minutes.

Sensabaugh misses his first eight shots but keeps shooting and leads the team in scoring yet again. Thornton is in a severe shooting slump for the entire month, the best foul shooter on the team misses half his foul shots. The so called team leader Justice Sueing has a hideous game, 1-6 shooting for 4 points, credited with four turnovers but actually had more than that. His pass to the wing was at the teammates feet and fumbled away yet the other player gets credited with the turnover. He had two bad offensive fouls as well on drives near  the foul line. At least he did make a nice pass to Sensabaugh in the corner for a made three pointer late in the game.

Holden looked a little better, actually getting to the foul line however he also had his share op lapses. Okpara has done nothing to speak of since the Purdue game. Likekele, Gayle and Brown are basically on the court so there are five guys on the floor at the same time.

I see no emotion on this team, just going through the motions, watching Sensabaugh trying to do it all on one end of the court.

Another game that is in doubt with less than a minute to play and they can't close it out, odd game management, why was Sensabaugh on the court in a must foul situation, letting 17 seconds drain off the clock then fouling, having a lineup with Brown playing center while both Key and Okpara are on the bench, still playing the same basic defense, not using your athletes to create pressure and tempo.

Austin is even in a worse spot, it is in a very fast growing market and will  never sniff a pro team in a major sport. San Antonio was the back up plan for the Saints after Katrina hit and the Super Dome could not be rehabbed. The NBA already has a team in San Antonio, hockey isn't going there and neither is MLB with two teams already in the state.

How does a B1G team shoot under 38% from the field three games in a row, especially when two of them are league bottom feeders. I have pointed out that they were not getting to the foul line enough, tonight they get there 23 times but only make 15. This is about 20% below where they shot the last three games when they were well over 80%.

I have seen enough of Sueing his one nice pass to Sensabaugh does little to make up for his poor play. The offense is so wing oriented they had a difficult time getting the ball into the post when Walker was out of the game and had a obvious mismatch.

Thornton with a 1-6 shooting night, his best conference game was 4-10 from the floor, the balance of the games is about 25%.

A new stadium is going to cost at least a billion dollars, that is on the low end, and any owner is going to want public money for most of the cost. Do you think the voters in Franklin County or some multi county group is going to want to pay for it?

The only thing that would really make sense is a multi use facility like Indy has, where you can do the NCAA basketball tourney and other big events to give the facility more dates and offset the price tag. A multi use place probably has a floor closer to 2 billion dollars. There were whispers of a new stadium for the Browns or a roof over the current stadium that would serve the same purpose.

He is obviously having some issues off the court to deal with, we have no idea how this is effecting his game. We don't know if they still exist or the have been resolved. They are asking to split time as either a power forward on defense and when Thornton is out running the point on offense, not sure those are his best roles. Never thought he was going to be a star but was hoping that he could be a Young type player that does the little things well.

Sensabaugh has 19 assists in 17 games, he has 4 assists in 6 conference games, he isn't suddenly going to change his game. He isn't going to give up shots, especially to Thornton, Sueing especially on the perimeter. Like I have said in other threads, this team is not getting to the foul line enough, -26 in attempts in the conference.  Tanner who was one of the best in the country at getting to the foul line has been there just 4 times in conference match ups, Thornton has been there just 10 times.

The entire team has a negative assist to turnover ratio in the conference,

The Dolphins wanted no part of the AFC south when they added the 32nd team, they wanted to continue their rival games with NE, NYJ and Buffalo, to satisfy the many transplants from those areas.

The AFC Central has some very good rivalries especially after you add in all the back stories related to Modell. Look at the NFC, why is Dallas in the east, it is the long term rivals.

In the mic'd up game we saw many times where the players were disengaged in the huddle during time outs, too bad we don't have video and audio to see if the players were really paying attention to what was being called in the huddle. We don't know if it was poor play design, bad execution or great defense that blew up the play on the court.

The womens hockey team is ranked first, the womens basketball team is ranked second, have the two similar mens programs been ranked first and second ever in the same week ( any sport first or second)?

Comment 16 Jan 2023

You wanna know why you are losing close games, you aren't getting to the foul line and getting easy points, in conference play OSU has attempted 85 free throws while the opponent has attempted 111. That is an average of four per game. Only Sueing has been to the foul line more than 20 times in conference games.

Thornton is in a bad shooting slump, making 31% from the floor in league play, Sensabaugh had just four assists with 13 turnovers in league play, Zed has two assists and nine turnovers,

Sensabaugh and McNeil are shooting a combined 50% from three, taking about half the shots, they need to exploit this part of the game especially if they are not getting to the foul line.

Comment 15 Jan 2023

How many loose balls did they fail to get, they ended up as offensive rebounds or team rebounds for Rutgers, seemed as if every loose ball ended up in the possession of Rutgers.

Another game of less than 40% shooting from the field and get to the foul line just 12 times in 45 minutes, with two of the 12 being a technical on the coach.  Sueing and Thornton with bad shooting games yet again, the team is forced to ride on the back of Sensabaugh, He scored 17 points combined in the second half and overtime.

Zed was a single rebound away from two players having a double double in the same game, I wonder when the last time that happened?

Every possession on offense looks like a true struggle to get a shot off especially in late game situations.

One of the biggest recruiting tools the schools use are the summer camps where they can get a player on campus, sometimes a camp is done off campus,  scout them through drills, some competition among players at a similar skill level and get to know them on a one on one basis. There are some scouts out in the field as well, there are scouting services some schools use, I know some schools help subsidize 7 on 7 programs. Sometimes a coach at a high school may already have a connection to a college as well and want to get their kid recruited by that school that he has a connection.

A well funded school will use every method possible in the evaluation / recruiting process.

A school can serve as a pipeline for several years and suddenly dry up, in some cases it can be turned back on again, Cleveland Glenville and Ted Ginn Sr. is a perfect example.

Comment 14 Jan 2023

that charging foul called at midcourt was one of the worst calls I have seen in a long time, there is no way the player established legal guarding position, in this play the OSU dribbler had no chance to avoid the contact
